Just got back from the body shop, the total damage looks to be around 15K, 8K of which is for parts alone. The shop said the frame suffered a slight bend but that it would easily straighten and the shop promised that it would be done right. My accident was on the 19th of January and they are hoping to get me the car back next week, so it might be in the shop for a total of 5 weeks. The insurance company said the car is valued at 28K and so to total it the damages have to be more than 21K, so looks like the car is mine whether I want it back or not. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of damage but what can you do? If the shop says they will do it right, hope they do what they say. I just got my car back and they finally got it right.

I got sideswiped a few months back but nothing compared to this, just looks scary. good luck getting the deductible back, it took about six months for me, I dont know why insurance companies wanna deny responsibility when its obviously their fault

I hear ya dude! $11K damages on mine. It's been in the shop since Jan 29, I should get it back next Friday. They've been taking their time with it....which is good. But it does suck!

To the OP: Sorry 'bout the car, but very thankful you and your daughter are OK.

To all: Sadly, in most states the person who hit him may NOT be liable if they claim the accident was caused by a third car. If the third car isn't around, you will get stuck with the deductable unless you can collect it from the state uninsured motorist fund. Your insurance company won't go after the driver that hit you's insurance to try anc collect $500 for you.

Estimate was almost $19,000, but not totalled because the value was too high. I called around to some friends in the business and they told me that the only body shop to bring it to was one with a computerized frame straightener. There was only one place near me, so I sent the car there.

After 3 yrs, I can honestly say that I can not tell the difference from before and after the accident. I've put 20,000 miles on the car, and tire wear and handling is perfect.

Just make sure that a computerized frame straightener is used.
I could not agree more. Butcher shops who don't have computerized frame straightness often times just PULL on the frame without getting measurements correct.

Most cars, like our TLs (well... mine was STOLEN ) are unibody, not frames. The unibody, if i am correct, has crushing points which crush when significant force, like this accident, come into play. When they fix these kind of damages, they "uncrush" it until it comes close to the factory alignment. Now... do you want a COMPUTER to figure out what's the best and closest alignment to factory, or you want some butcher who's got the car strapped to the floor and is pulling with jacks lol, I know there is a way to measure with a ruler one part of the car to the other... but do you TRUST they do a good job?

It's very scary.

This happened to me back on December 6. Some kid rear ended me at a stop sign as I waiting to pull on to a street that is on an S curve. Everyone was OK, but the kid's girlfriend got her thumb blown off from their airbags. I think they can sew those back on though...
Before:

After:

He pushed me out about 10 feet!

It took a month to get my car back, not the same but it could have been worse. Excuse the saltiness lol

So my car was "supposed" to be done last Friday, was it, of course not! The shop stated that they are still working on it and have the air bag tech coming to install and configure the new airbags on Thursday and so my car would be done on Friday, we'll see if that comes true, let's hope so, if I get the car back on Friday that would be a little over 6 weeks, dang!

I did talk to the service rep handling my car and he stated that all parts are brand new OEM and that the frame has been straightened with a computerized machine and that it was done right, we'll see how it goes, I'll post pics once it's done...

Damn man I'm sorry it's taking so long for you to get your car back.

At least you are getting genuine OEM parts and not some half ass shit. I would rather wait a few extra days or weeks making sure everything is done right than having it back and knowing it was all thrown together quickly.

Wow...I feel ya man. Body shops never get the car done ontime but I hope your shop gets it right the first time. Inspect the car well before you drive it home. Let them take there time, as long as they do it right!

This may or not be too late - but...

I would have started discussions with Dimished Value on the car right off the bat - expecially after they found additional work required.

BEFORE they purchased any parts and started any work other than tear down...

Now - if it is already repaired - I see it was back in Jan -

Go for Dimished Value.

Because everybody and their brother is so afraid of any reported damage (and people are getting REALLY stupid with this...) the value has gone down. You can get it in many states.

I was driving home from the airport today after dropping my wife off at 5am and got it up to 100 with no problems at all, here's some pics...

Yeah, I thought so too, a friend of mine works at a different body shop and he was amazed at the work they did, so I guess good things do come to those who wait, although 6+ weeks was a long time while driving a Mazda 6!

Beautiful! From the pics, it looks like all the body panels are perfectly in line and the gaps are consistent all around the car. I especially like the last pic with the mountains in the background

Get checked out by a physician if she hit you that hard you could possibly be injured and not feel any soreness until later on. You are fortunate that you and your kid are ok so far.
She hit you. She lost control of her vehicle. She failed to control her speed. She did not maintain a safe driving distance from the car in front of her. The dumbass cop obviously failed to recognize this. You will unfortunately have to some how get her insurance company to cover this. You might even have to have your attorney send this bitch a letter threatening a suit for all damages incurred.

Fuck the police
