I was just looking at the pictures posted by user "thegabrielles" because he has the locking box. I won't put my skis in an exposed roof rack where they just get covered in road spray and gunk. So what are the measurements on that roof box? Can you easily fit a pair of 198-cm skis in there?

Here is the info on the one we bought, I pulled it directly off their website (Yakima.com) but I went and measured ours and really there is only about 85" or so of usable space, if your skiis are 198cm long I dont think it will work. But it is close. I belive Thule has a longer box than Yakima, seems like they had one over ...check it out http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/box_comparison.asp

i usually load my skis on in their bag (stacked with bottoms touching) and just let the cordura/waterproof bag get all 'gunked'. put the flats (ski back) to the front of the car and the tips at the back. Just have to be sure to bind up any bag straps and stuff that could 'whack' the roof... can replace alot of ski bags for $400. Probably are really supposed to do the skis single layer in the rack, but, you can clinch them in there stacked. snowboard... probably not so feasible in a bag

Thanks, thegabrielles. 198 cm is equivalent to about 78 inches, so it might work. Thankfully, I have several months to chew on it!

CHeck out the different models, some are a lot narrower, a great benifit as mine is like a parachute on the TL. I like being able to store my stuff in a locked container, it helps keep people honest sometimes, plus you can put other stuff in there liek we did, camping gear for a 16 day camping trip... sure is nice to have a truck and an RV now.

Well, the real risk with that is that I like to go skiing in Quebec and the temperature can get down to -8F or lower, which makes me really not keen on having anything exposed. But I appreciate the advice just the same. Thanks.

you could probably get away with it, just dont forget to take any bike racks or cargo boxes off.

I deided it was not worth the risk of running it through, unless it is brushless, I took the car to a spray car wash and washed it myself with just pressure when we were on the trip.

By the way, I did not pay $400, I think I got it for around $250, the price above is just a MRSP...which is usually BS, plus I got the spring discount and I got the discount for signing up, all turned our pretty good.

I paid around $500 for the whole set up, Thule rack, and yakima box. I dont remember the exact break down of prices but the sale was 20% off, then I got an additional 10% off for signing up for their free membership. Add that up and its around $650 before the discounts. But as I stated I really dont remmeber the exact numbers just close.
