XM Weather - maybe a mod in the future

Check out this article:

I'd like to see this integrate with the navi screen. Toss in real-time traffic info and that would be awesome.

XM WX Satellite Weather Service for Aircraft Receives Certification by Federal Aviation Administration
Monday March 8, 1:41 pm ET
FAA Grants Approval for XM Aviation Data Receiver Manufactured by Heads Up Technologies

WASHINGTON, March 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: XMSR - News), America's leading satellite radio service, and Heads Up Technologies, a leading developer of digital systems for the aviation industry, announced today that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified the XM Aviation Data Receiver that delivers XM WX Satellite Weather for aircraft.

XM is now the only provider of FAA-approved solutions for both satellite radio and satellite weather for aircraft.

XM WX Satellite Weather gives pilots comprehensive, graphical information about weather conditions across the United States. The service delivers critical, real-time information for pilots:

* NEXRAD Radar in high resolution, full-color graphical format to
review weather patterns overlaid on a map at a glance

* Wind speed and direction at 3,000-foot intervals up to 42,000 feet

* Lightning strikes from the National Lightning Detection Network

* Storm cell identification and tracking for strong storms, and
projected storm paths over the next 15 minutes

* Continuously updated current and forecast conditions at airports
across the country

* Compatibility with a wide range of electronic displays.

The FAA granted its approval -- formally known as Supplemental Type Certificate and Parts Manufacturer Approval (STC-PMA) -- for the XMD075-01 aviation data receiver manufactured by Heads Up.

"The XM WX service makes it easy for pilots to receive continuous, detailed weather information in the cockpit," said Roderick MacKenzie, XM's Director of Advanced Applications. "This service will help pilots make better-informed decisions under all weather conditions."

"The XM WX service significantly improves the quality and timeliness of weather information available in flight, and we're proud to introduce the first FAA-certified XM data receiver," said Rob Harshaw, President and CEO of Heads Up Technologies.

The XM WX Satellite Weather service is available for aviation, marine and emergency management applications. The service is powered by location- specific weather data and groundbreaking technology provided by WxWorx, Inc, an affiliate of Baron Services, Inc., the nation's leading provider of analytical weather services to the TV broadcast and emergency management industries.

XM is unique in its ability to provide both the XM WX Satellite Weather service and XM Satellite Radio's critically-acclaimed lineup of more than 120 channels of music, news, sports, talk, and entertainment to aircraft using a single antenna. In addition to its aviation data receiver, Heads Up also offers the only family of FAA-approved multi receiver units for listening to XM Radio in cabin-class aircraft, allowing individual channel selection at every seat.

Wow that would be so cool, if this was intergrated into the Navi system, and was able to give you real time weather from any point in the country!!!

Like showing a radar screen on the LCD screen! WOW.. I don't think they will be able to do it with current setup, but maybe in future models.
