WTF???!!! XM Radio TAXES???!!!

OK, so I just moved to Jacksonville, FL from Maryland. According to XM Radio, Maryland did not charge taxes on the two XM radios that we have. Our total monthly bill is $19.94. I just got dinged for a charge of $22.94. I just got off the phone with XM, and they said Florida charges taxes on the XM radio!!!!!!!!

WTF???!! Why would Florida charge taxes on something and Maryland doesn't, especially on a NATIONWIDE service. Has anyone else had this problem?

Last time I was in Delaware at a Home Depot, I bought some wood and paid $5.

Last weekend I was in my neighborhood home depot. I bought some wood for $5, but had to pay $5.30 for the 6% sales tax.

Why would PA charge taxes on something that Delware doesn't? Especially on a NATIONWIDE store.

Different states can have different taxes...sales and otherwise.

No state income tax in FL. Got to pay for all the goods and services through the tax base. Think of it this way... the extra $36 per year is a hell of a lot less than 6% of your gross pay.

Umm, so you're paying an additional $3/month for the service? Personally, that doesn't sound like much to get upset about. Although, I guess when you look at it as a percentage, your monthly bill increased by 15%, which sounds much more significant.

But still, it's only $3. You're gonna spend more than that on aspirin to take care of the headache that you're giving yourself...

Amen! I wish would get rid of the income tax and do a tax on goods instead.

Well, it's just not XM radio that charges the taxes. Yes, I do get 6% of my pay back, but my pay is also roughly $9,700 less than what is was in Maryland, which works out to be roughly 14.9% of my Maryland pay. Considering, also, that I paid higher in my home loan interest rate (due to the housing "bust", but still), registration is MUCH more expensive, property taxes are MUCH more expensive, HOA and CDD fees are MUCH more expensive ($350/month vs. $43/month in Maryland), plus I have to pay for garbage collection now, and some other things we weren't exactly expecting, we're actually losing money compared to when I was living in Maryland.

Oh well, we're MUCH happier down here because I have a garage!

You won't realize it until sometime around September......but you're actually paying for the sunshine. You didn't pay for it in Maryland....so you didn't get any!

Does anyone else have to pay taxes on their XM radio subscription? The basic radio subscription is $12.99, and $6.99 for an extra radio. That USED to be $19.98 for two radios, and now it's at $22.94, just because I changed my address to Florida. Anyone else have to pay taxes?

Question: Is there a reason you can't do the $77/yr on both XM radios?

Currently you pay: $22.94/month x 12 = $275.28

With the $77/yr deal you would pay: $77.00 x 2 = $154.00

Savings of: $121.28!
Why wouldn't you try doing that? It seems no one (including me - but my XM is free because they just forget to charge me and have for over a year now) had much trouble if any getting the deal. Why don't you take up on it???

Brooke,
Because that deal is only for customers that had their XM subscription run out after the initial three month free period. Mine ran out over two years ago. And I think adding another radio into the mix certainly doesn't help.

That deal is working for anyone who cancels their subscription. People are getting it multiple times. For instance:

3 month free trial
1 year at $66
1 year at $77
1 year at $77

Others have never had XM since the trial period and sign up and get the deal. If at first you don't succeed, just call back and get another person. They have 3 call centers.

So even though I've auto paid for XM for almost two years, if I call XM to cancel my account, and they cancel it, I should call back and say that I received this flyer?

Others have done so. Some have just called and said they got the flyer and don't want to pay the high rate they were charged.... and have had their charge adjusted downward.

You have nothing to lose by trying. Read the thread, in Part 2 and you will see the experiences of others in the same boat. I don't remember all the details except they were able to do it.

My trial ran out and I did the auto pay. Saw the post here about the $77 dollars and called XM. Told them I got a thing in the mail - they asked me the codes ect... and within 5 min.s they took me off of auto pay and on the $77/yr What can you loose beside some time? Now as for the 121.28 you can save go ahead and mail it to me

Love~

DirecTV put out a note about this tax some time ago. Apparently Congress allowed states to charge an excise tax for things like satellite services and some states have implemented them.

All politicians are liars and thieves.

"I see," said the blind man as he pissed into the wind. "It all comes back to me now."

That's crap.

I still haven't called XM radio yet.

Xtin! How are you? How's the weather back up north? It's awesome here, except for the high heat. Oh well.

I would have expected a major discount for being a Gator fan. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.
