Wow, TL Newbie with 6-speed gets 33MPG!
Well it's my first post so sorry to rehash a familiar topic.
I've had my 06 TL over a month and have about 1500 miles on it. I took my first long trip all highway 300 miles+. My average speed was 69mph, and trip computer said I averaged 33 MPG....backed it up by checking with a calculator. Man that's impressive for a sports sedan weighing in at 3500lbs.
I've been reading some of the threads complaining about bad gas mileage. I'm frankly astounded how efficient these cars are. I have also been doing darn great on my commute to work 28mpg. 80% highway, 20% city.
I sold my Z-28 to get into this ride, and I really have been blown away by high level of refinement. Of course a Camaro is probably the least refined vehicle ever manufactured, but it had one hell of an engine-LS1. In my opinion best part of this car is the SOHC engine. Smooth, refined, and very efficient. Honda powertrains just kick butt.
The TL is a great ride, and I'm very pleased with the purchase.

LS1s get pretty good gas mileage as well when you drive them conservativly. Although you're right, Camaros are of the least refined vehicles out there. The TL interior is light years ahead of a Camaro, hell its lightyears ahead of my CL

Great, welcome aboard!
Last September, I started out on my vacation at noon on a Sunday, not my usual 4:30 AM, because of a pending hurricane. I gassed up, set my tripometer and my computer readout to zero, and began my first leg of my journey. It was 86 degrees outside and the traffic in my part of Virginia was moderate (normal) for a Sunday afternoon. We ran the A/C the entire trip, speeds were from around 62 to 78 MPH, with most of the mileage running around 74 - 78 MPH for this first leg.
When I stopped for fuel, I parked my TL on a spot that appeared to have the same slope as when I had filled up back home. For my efforts, I managed 33.94 MPG.
Oh, I have an '04 with manual transmission and Nav. And my to and from work mileage in the summer months averages the the 27 MPG range with the colder months showing in the 25 MPG range.

Dang ! That's good. I do a lot of highway driving but get 25-26 on average. Which I think is good given a 3.2L. If I reset the trip computer on the highway I get 33-34 but that quickly dips over the next few days as I resume a normal mix of roads.

Good job..
The J series really shines on the highway... around town its pretty mediocre in terms of fuel economy.

Actually what I noticed so far is
Bigger motors tend to be accurate on City EPA figure while
high-revving smaller motors eat more gas in city than EPA numbers.
I think it's because every stop, I have to push engine to about 4000RPM to get same acceleration as I did with bigger motor(which I only pushed up to around 2500-3000).
On the highway, big old pushrod american V6 or V8 eats more gas definitely. Honda shines on highway by eating far less gas than EPA figure.

One more interesting point is my Z is 11 years old now (bought new) and it has been completely trouble free - not bad from such a crude piece. I've had 3 TLs and none of them can lay claim to that record - but they are still great refined rides.

No doubt I miss the Z-28. The T-56 6-speed and LT1/LS1 were the backbone for a modern muscle car. It was the only reason you could tolerate such lack of refinement, but man talk about awesome capability.
I'm sure the Honda Powertrain Engineers could design a real show stopper if they got the green light to build a V-8. As you can tell I'm pretty blown away with the J-Series V-6...not sure there is a better balance of performance and efficiency anywhere. One drive was all it took.

I think GM could also do a good job as well. Caught an update from the Detroit car show and GM had a prototype new Camaro. It was modern retro with 400HP - I think there was a Challanger proto there as well - perhaps a rebirth of the muscle/pony car is near.

I also have been absolutely amazed at my highway mileage. On my last road trip of 498 miles, I averaged 62 mph at 32 mpg over the course of 7:56 hours. Not bad for such a roomy car. Now if I could only solve Northern Virginia traffic...

I've been amazed by the mileage too.
With the car having less than 200 miles, I did a 1,000 mile roundtrip from N.O. to Dallas . At an average speed of 70 mph (all interstate), my mpg was 33! I was blown away.
Combine that type of mileage with the big tank, and I'm good for 500+ miles per tank with a huge cushion. This car is awesome for road trips.
