Would you let your kid drive your TL?

I'm just wondering how many Dad's or Mom's are out there and would you let your sons or daughters get behind the wheel of your TL.

As for me I would NEVER let my son behind the wheel of my TL unless I was with him. Heck, I don't even like my wife to drive my car. She has already curbed the wheels of our 05 Odyssey and the interior has the smell of strarbucks along with the stains too.

Don't get me wrong my son is very responsible for a 17yr old. But at that age sometimes he lets his testosrone get the best of him.

If my dad will let me drive it, any dad would let their kids drive it, Now to get him to let me drive it. I get my permit in january so there should be a lot of ice to try the VSA on.

If I had a nice car I wouldn't let my kids even sit in it(I don't like having my little bro and sis in my future car.

I would hope that most other kids would respect their parents car and not do anything stupid in it (unlike that dumb ass who wants to rev his engine to scare people at the stop light).

I drive my moms TL a fair amount. Usually when I drive it is when I am going out of town somewhere casue my mom doesn't want me driving my accord becasue she is affraid it will brake down or if I do get in a wreck I would be much safer in the TL. It is all an issue of responsibility. I have drivin for over a year with no wrecks and no tickets. I first drove the TL myself after having my license for about 6 months. My parents have told me many times as soon as anything happens (ticket/wreck) in any car including mine I will lose this privlage. Lucky for me I am still clean and btw I am very passionate about cars and take VERY good care of them. I car about my moms car more than her and I wax it for her. I also took her to the acura dealer where she fell in love with the TL

It would all depend on his/her maturity, common sense/responsibility, and most important "respect" level for what he/she is being handed. The other issue is, you may have a highly responsible teenager yet when they get some of their less than desirable friends in the car with them,,,,, thats when sh$t happens. Pure pressure has a way of turning a great teen into one asking: "why the heck did I do that" very quickly...
It's funny when I think back to all the times my dad would say: I was your age once"!!! I use to think that was so lame. Once you have kids of your own that phrase comes out of your mouth before you have time to stop it....
Anyway, I'm just glad I have numerous years of restful sleep before my kids are driving/chasing the opposite sex etc. I could really care less if they damaged one of the family vehicles as long as they and/or someone else isn't hurt. Accidents are bound to happen, one can only hope and pray the outcome is just a solid learning experience..

Great,, I'm going to have "teen driving" nightmares tonight for sure..

Cheers all

out of pretty much everything i have... i love my TL the most. i was very fortunate to get a second generation TL as my first car (parents bought it for me). cool story. i went to Germany for three weeks on a school trip and when i got home there was my family standing to a TL. haha i freaked out. i don't recall a time that i was more happy than that. but i'm a very responsible kid as i like to think. haha. i clean my car atleast every two weeks, always keep clean, and drive it safetly. however, i do unleash it sometimes just to here that vtec roar, but only when no one else is around. all i've done to my TL is tint the windows 35 in front and 25 in back, new stereo system (JL baby), and a viper alarm system. soon i will be getting 18" axis mod 7's and h&r sport springs. then over the winter, i plan on working so i can buy comptech intake, headers, and exhaust. then i'm done. for my next car i plan on sticking with acura, prolly another TL ha. i love it and have nothing to complain about. only that they need RWD!!! haha. i just thought i'd add my story. peace out!

If I were your Dad I wouldnt let you drive it solely because you can't spell.

With that said, I'm only 24, and my kid wont have to drive my cars because he'll have his own, but a TL wouldnt be a problem in my eyes.

i ment it as a figure of speech. what, u think i actually go up to every car i see, put it in neutral and rev the engine to scare ppl away? u dont even know me, so dont talk shit, just cause im seventeen. why is it that people are quick to judge us just because we are teenagers, and because some teens act like idiots, they stereotype us. but dont get me wrong, there are alot of ppl on this forum who give good advice, and dont judge purely based on age. i visit this forum for auto advice in general, and am still learning new things everyday. im not some spoiled brat as some of you may think, so my parents cant afford to buy me a new car, let alone a used one; neither can i as i am paying for my own tuition.

I have owned my tl for 1.5 months... I wont even let my wife drive it yet.. I would not want to be the one who brought the car back with a new scratch.

I wash the damn NHB car twice a week and know every blemish.. and the SH*&^ would it the fan if I found one I was not responsible for.

LOL

So you want your parents to let you drive THEIR new TL on icy roads to test the stability control, but if you were a parent yourself (we're assuming you mature not one day further, of course), you wouldn't let your children SIT in the car? Here's to hoping you're never a parent, as when it comes down to your child or your car, the car is no longer important.

I have a 7 and a 4 year old - both girls.... I'm not in much of a position to answer the question realistically - I think it's a situational thing - depends on the kid... I have a ways to go. However, I am glad I'll be making this decision for a girl rather than a boy.

With regard to letting your kid drive the TL.... The TL is a potentially dangerous car in the hands of any kid. It's capaibilities allow bad things to happen too quickly/easily.

I'd prefer to have my kids driving around in something with poor acceleration and good braking. When you let your kid drive a car, you're way ahead of the game if it's hard for your kid to get into trouble in the first place. Yes, you can talk about how safe the TL is, but the best safty features are the ones that NEVER end up being used.

If you're letting your kid drive your TL, don't fool yourself into thinking that he/she (mostly he) won't "see what she's got". Despite it's fantastic safety features, the TL is not a great car for kids in my opinion.

I have two brothers - our first vehicles and the results:

Me - Ford Escort (no accidents, no tickets)
First Brother - 2 door Jeep Chrokee - 4 banger (no accidents, no tickets)
Second Brother - VW Jetta GLI 16-Valve and very peppy (multiple accidents, multiple tickets - vehicle finally ended up rolled and totalled)

Safety is the biggest factor. I would never be driving my beautiful 02 TL-S unless it was a very safe car. It officially becomes mine in January. But my Dad completely trusts me in it, he is aware I'm a teenager with testosterone, but he also realizes I'm not an idiot. It's all about the trust

I don't have kids yet, being that I'm only 24. But I sure as hell would not let my girlfriend dirve it. Especially knowing that my TL is 6-speed.

Maybe in 13 more years when he has a license... A 14 year old car should be just right for him.. (My first car was 1 year older than me... picked it up for $600 when I was 15)

haha you're still going on that thread that was made by massr1 you really need to let things go so what if we want to rev our engines at red lights its not like we do it all the time just once in a while to have some fun (i am sure im not the only one that does it on this forum and pretty sure other people who do it are older then 20) and i have a very similar thread after your thread was locked massr1 the name is removing resonators link
if you are still interested there are some helpful posts there go check it out when your free and by the way 2005Aspec let me know if there are any spelling mistakes in this post i was just using something called slang

p.s. sorry about that long response just had to address a couple of comments made in this thread

I had a 2 g type S and I recall when my GF drove it slowly down the street only to hear some squealing tires in the distance. When she came back i said you smoked the tires a bit at the intersection 1/2 mile away.. She smiled and said yes. She said she thought it has more power. VSA was on and she was not sure how to turn it off That and 40 series sticky tires helped..

Point is ... many people will want to take the car through it paces to see what it can and cannot do and that's when you get into trouble.

I would let my teenager drive my TL if I had one of those "driving monitors" that records where and what speeds the car was driven.

it truely depends how much of a car freak u are. If you are a dad that buys a car for solely "transportation" purposes, u prolly wouldn't mind letting ur kid drive it. But if u love cars and ur TL means a whole lot to u, u will prolly feel that it is wrong for other ppl to drive ur car.

What I would do is, make sure ur kid works, and has lotta $, so if he does wreck the car, he can pay for it ;P *thats what I would do*

Jesus Christ, some of you guys (interestingly enough, the teens) really, really need to type properly. Your spelling & grammar are waaaaay too off. This is another reason why you get no respect - you ask stupid questions (or simply say idiotic things), and you type in a manner that just pisses the readers off.

Use the ENTER key every now and then, at least. I'm getting sick of reading 10-line run-on sentences.

I realize that most people on the board are very careful and anal when it comes to their cars, which when you spend that much money to buy it, and put a lot of time and energy to keep it in nice shape, it's understandable that you'd be hesititant to allow others to drive it. The question is if you'd let your kid drive your TL. First of all, what do you consider a "kid"? Someone who has their learners permit, someone who has had their license for a year? This question is like asking, "what color TL should I get?" - it's all subjective to the person and situation.

What if I asked what you would think if someone let a 20 year old drive a 35 foot bus? Yea, ridiculous, huh? Haven't had their license for more than 4 years, yet they're driving a bus. I have, and I worked with 18 year olds that are driving a bus. It all comes down to responsibility and their driving ability - not their age. I know a bunch of adults that I wouldn't even let drive my Jeep.

As parents, you have to realize that your child's safety is more important than your car. I understand that some kids tend to act like dumbasses out on the road, but the majority of dumbasses on the road AREN'T kids. So you be the judge of if you think your "kid" or in this case, any person of any age, is responsible and a good driver to keep your TL unharmed and out of harms way. It's also good that if you're going to allow someone else to drive your car, drive with them for awhile until they are comfortable with the car...dimensions, acceleration, braking, turning, and the minimum distance they must park away from other cars. Yes, the TL has a pretty strong engine that is capable of high speeds, but who says that a Civic won't hit triple digits? It just takes a little bit longer for the Civic to get to that speed.

My dad is as much of a car nut as my brother and I am, and he lets me drive all of his cars. He taught my brother and I to drive stick on his BMW. It all depends on trust. He knows how we drive and he trusts us.

my dad taught me how to drive a stick on the TL. Anytime I want to drive it he told me to go for it. He knows that ill take care of it and he is more worried about other drivers crashing into me. That doesnt mean though that i dont get a huge smile on my face when i get on it some.

I think a TSX is a perfect car for a teenager, actually. But I'd still let him drive the TL any time.

My thought is help the kid out.. they should learn mistakes in cars that are not so costly. They should have a reliable used car to drive. If they want something better well then they can go to work and figure out how to get something better and the opportunity costs associated with that.

Drive dad's car now and then sure... but after they know how to drive. Getting a license is not knowing how to drive and handle a car with a certain amount of power etc... When I was 16 my friend's dad gave him the keys to a brand new oldsmoble with a 400 V8 in it... later that day the kid floored it going around a corner and ended up off the road...

lessons learned...

I wouldn't put my child in a beater car. His safety is the MOST important thing, therefore a late model car is necessary. I think the TSX is perfect, with its VSA, ABS, HID, and full array of airbags with strong safety scores. It's also not extremely powerful.

used and beater there is a difference. a later model car does not provide more safety that is a common misconception that new is always better. But if you want to toss bucks at your kids out of fear well then go ahead. They will probably bitch when they are 19 that they have to drive a 2 year old car!!!

car makers love you..lol stay off the road and you are safer...

Side Curtain Airbags are vital, as long as it has them, it can be considered. If you don't understand the difference those can make, do your own research.

That's all.

I don't currently have children, but when I do, I would let my children drive our nice cars, however I would never buy them a 35k car. They will get a good used car and they will drive it until they graduate from college and make money of their own. Teenagers need to learn the value of money. They need to understand that it takes hard work to buy the things you want. Handing things to them on a silver platter is not going to teach them anything. Also, no matter how safe and cautious a driver they think they are when they get into the car with a group of friends the tendency to show off comes out and bad things happen.

All these teenager on here need to be thankful that their parents have the money to buy them 35k cars at age 16 or 17. There are so many people in this world who can't even afford a beat up car and have to rely on public transporation. Just remember all those along the Gulf Coast who couldn't evacuate because the had no means to leave.

wow I guess people on here never drove a non air bag vehicle. To each their own. I was making the point that new drivers typically cannot handle a car with a lot of power and regardless of safetly equipment they need to know how to handle the car... If you can afford 30 k or more for a car of a young driver and the 4000 a year to insure a new driver, then good for you.

Quick Reply: Would you let your kid drive your TL?
