Window tint on 3G TL - Who didnt get moleskin?
#81
My installer stopped installing moleskin but modified some inner lining strip that causes the scratches he said. He also mentioned it would be a good idea to just spray some water into the inner windows from time to time. I haven't sprayed the water but am scratch free for about 8 months now.
I spoke with a well know and recommended window tint man yesterday.
I did not bring up moles skin but right away when he saw my car he explained to me that these year TL's were known to scratch tint up due to the plastic that rubs on the inside part of the window.
He said over the years he had tried felts on it and had mixed reviews.
He recommended that he just remove the plastic. Said there would be a gap but it will not affect the window operation.
Has anyone here ever done this or had it done ? Thoughts ?

I had my tints redone because of scratches on all window tints. I installed moleskin and no more scratches. I highly recomend doing this, its a real easy DIY and only costs $6 for the moleskin and about two hours of your time.
I bet you you cut the moleskin to fit the top and bottom rubber separately. If you install the single strip over both the bottom and top robber you should get rid of glue streaks. This happened to me and I had to install it again to fix it.

I've had tint without moleskin for over 3 years now and have no problems with scratches. I live in the dusty Las Vegas desert and I roll my windows up and down ALL THE TIME! My tint guy said moleskin was a scam and I believe him. He said all you need is a good quality tint.
I don't know the brand he uses...

That could make sence. Maybe the harder tint doesnt scratch as bad as a softer tint.
What is the best brand of tint that doesnt scratch ?????

Read my quote from above. My tint installer has a complete 5 star review status on yelp with over 200 reviews - that almost never happens. He's got experience and if done right, modifying the inner strip tactfully will not cause any harm or increase road noise. He said the same thing about TL's being known to scratch tint.
Can you maybe explain what he did ?
Might have to drive over the mountain just to go to your guy

^^^ok maybe it's not 200 reviews but 80, here's the link: http://www.yelp.com/biz/rocky-mounta...nt-livermore-2
local installers were quoting $5-700 for Huper and I was like no way I'm gonna pay that so I went with Pinnacle Formula One ceramic and he's the only guy I know of that installs that stuff in the Bay.
Not sure exactly what he did but he showed be an inner window strip similar to the pics above and said this is what causes the scratches and said it won't make a difference if he modifies it, so I said go for it.

Installed my tint.
I cleaned the window seals, and reinstalled them, no moleskin, no scratches still, but I want to see if it the type of tint I'm using if it makes a difference.

my shop is telling me they never had any issues w/ TLs and they offer lifetime warranty. So i think i will pass on moleskin to aviod streaks. i know they use metallic tint, their prime business is tinting buildings so i'm guessing they must use heavy duty tints.
Has anyone ever had a shop deny the warranty on repairs on scratches?

get mole skin or you will regret it. not the cheap stuff either. i tinted windows and they all scratched. installed mole skin and no more scratches. nothing worse than fresh tint with scratches. trust me i learned the hard way

i didnt realize until i was getting the tint redone, under warranty, that the original installer did use moleskin.
my horror story:
i still had many fine lines with moleskin. went to get it redone. the new installer (because i moved from San Diego back to San Jose) didnt do it properly, so they had to re-install new tint a 2nd time.
the process of installing tint requires them to use water, maybe soapy water. so by the 2nd time it weakened the glue of the moleskin and i had A LOT of glue coming up on 1 window, and some glue on another window.
eventually the moleskin just came off/up on the real bad window.
the shop is going to redo all of my tint, and once it dries i will re-install new moleskin on all 4 windows.

also, moleskin should be installed after the tint is installed and dried, but before you roll down the windows.
the installation process weakens the glue (because tint installation requires using water to apply the tint), causing glue streaks. happened to me when i had my tint redone.
tintprotect. com coupon code: "freeship" just saved me 5 bucks, found it with a simple google search.

My car was already tinted, but I didn't see any moleskin when I pulled the door panels. No scratches either. No clue what brand. On my other cars I have Llumar ATR and Sungard with no scratches or moleskin.

Wish I knew why everyone screws around with moleskin with adhesives and shit. Do the method with no adhesives that can smear, or moleskin that can peel off. Just get a roll of felt from your local walmart or fabric store and rape it around the rubber seal yourself. I think I originally got this idea from Justinspace and I did it on my 08 Type S. Perfect results, zero scratching, no glue streaks or any of that crap. And best of all the install is easy. You obviously still have to remove the door panels, but thats a very easy job on the TL's.

No moleskin applied here. 6 years later and only a single scratch on rear window due to debris. Would have happened with moleskin as well. A quality film is difficult to scratch

Unfortunately I do not have pictures, but the felt material is held in place on one side when you push that rubber piece back onto the door sheet metal, then the other side is secured when the door panel is replaced. So while the rubber strip is out and your are holding it you will use a flat head screw driver and jam the felt into the edges and ensure its as tight as possible. When you have it in place just place it back onto the sheet metal of the door that it rests on. Its kind of hard to explain with pics, but I think once you see what im talking about you will understand.
This method works 100% perfectly! I have now had my red Type S for over a year (believe it or not) and the DIY felt has been perfect. Not a single scratch of any sort anywhere. I wouldn't mess with that "moleskin" as it just sounds like it will eventually move or come off and get glue on your windows. That is not possible with this method.
