Why can't I sell my TL?
I've have it on autotrader.com, Trade Express, A-TL, Auto Seller, etc. and I cannot sell it. It's been over 6 months now, I don't understand. Does nobody want this car or what? I have it listed for 26k OBO, is this too much? It's a 2004 6-Speed, no nav, 33k miles. Please, if you have any suggestions, I'm running out of time!

list it on ebaymotors... i did a quick search and seems like a lot of them are selling for 25k at least... some as high as 28k, but that's with 15k miles, not 33k... but since yours is 6 speed, you might get a better response.

That's actually pretty good price for those kind of miles. Not alot of people are going to dive right into though because of the high mileage. I would try some local papers. That seems to work well too.

Internet selling is very hard. You only hear about the good expiriences. There are millions of vehicles on there of which only a small fraction sell. Your best bet is a is an ad in the classifieds, selling it to some one you know or just trading it in. Selling cars on your own is very difficult. The other minus is that its a manual tranny, the overwhelming majority of people don't want manuals, most people don't even know how to drive a manual anymore (thats why the make so few).

Dealers are not selling out the 6-speeds. no NAV. I just bought my TL 2004 6-speed a month ago new, for $5k under MSRP.. and they still had another 04 6-speed sitting there.. too many sales on new cars, the used car market has been down for awhile now.

you are having a hard time because the market you are hitting is extremely small. The market of people wanting a A spec 2004, who are going to pay you cash 26000.
for that much money most people would want a new one because likely no one has 26k in cash. And if they dont have cash they finance. The interest rate is considerably higher for used cars, no matter how old. Although over the long run your car is cheaper than a new one its still used.
Also consider in that price bracked people usually have a current car, a car they also want to trade in. You cant take trades like the dealer. Also if they trade a car even for a lower cut rate price they save on sales tax if applicable. Which can be alot (a few thousand dollars). Also even if its under warranty a buyer wants a dealership with some backing behind it , to prevent against a lemon. Also in that greater than 20 thousand bracket you are hitting higher middle class. They are not going to want a stick, and not going to want high miles (>15k per year). Also they want the creature stuff like automatic and navi. I agree with HiG4s, the manual and non nav are hard sells. Take the 22k , its not a bad price actually
Lesson, unless you have alot of time and can tolerate aggrevation trade the car in. No matter what Kelly blue book says unless you have a car thats in demand and is a collectors item you are not going to get that MINT trade in value. KBB has it for 25115, i put in A SPEC and miles

Keyes, offered 25k for trade, 22k if they buy it from me. But I already have another car, so that dosen't help me. I might as well put it on ebay for $23k, no reserve and see what happens. I accually figured getting the Manual might help resale, but I was wrong, people who call want the nav and auto. (damn)

Take the car into a Carmax dealership. I know there is one near LAX (I sold them my last car), and one in Duarte. Not sure which would be closer to you. They should give you a fair price for it and you don't have to buy anything from them. The quote is free, so you won't lose anything other than time and gas for the quote. Even if you prefer going through with a private sale, this will provide you with a backup plan.

Hey Ari.
Did anybody call at all? If nobody calls yet, it means your price is too high. Price your car at or slightly less than private party, good condition value. Excellent condition cars are exceptional and only about 5% of privately owned cars. Your asking price should be around $24.5k and start from there. When people start calling you, then you know that it's the right price.
It's also important to write a professional description in your ad. Put lots of pics of the actual car.
I also agree that 6MT is more difficult to sell, but I don't think it's hard at all. With the right prices, people will at least call or see the car.
Don't forget cars.com (Recycler), too. I'd try eBay as my last resort, just because most cars there are sold for lower prices. Get the car cleaned up and detailed, too.
Carmax is also a good backup plan... Good luck, man!

Try a CARMAX dealer. I talked to a salesperson there once and they say that they make written offers to purchase vehicles from people even if you are not purchasing one from them.
Good luck!!!

I'd say stick to the recycler, photobuys, autobuys, autotrader....i sold my last Acura in there...it took 2 months...only got a few legitimate calls but one caller met me at the car wash and bought my 8 year old Acura Legend w/140,000 miles for $10,000 cash, just under my asking price. Oh and pay the real price for the magazine not just online ads....

I should have put "YMMV"
What year/model was your BMW? They might not cater to the market that would typically buy a BMW, but I'm not sure. They had my car for about 30 minutes and I was extremely happy with what they offered for my '97 Outback wagon what was in previously in a pretty severe accident and had engine problems. I just didn't feel right selling it privately.

2001 5 series, manual transmission. (check my signature for a picture of it)
A new car dealer had offered me 1000 under wholesale without even driving it, but carmax lax says 4000 under and its a take it over leave "non negotiable" crap of talk. I dunno, maybe it was my car was wrong for their market b/c i had heard good things about Carmax's buying prices from a couple other people.

The Carmax site has an estimation tool you can use. They estimate the trade-in value of an excellent-condition 6-speed w/o NAVI with 33K miles in your area to be $23,650 so you can expect about that much if they purchase it outright from you. I've sold two vehicles to Carmax and each time they offered pretty much what the online tool estimated. But if you search for '04 TL's on the Carmax site, you won't find any in the country, auto, manual, NAV or non-NAV, for sale for less than $29K. Pretty nice markup.

actual mileage may vary....
got to remember that for 26k people can buy a new car and have a full warranty at the same time. People are too busy listening to the government that our economy is doing fine. It really does suck out there... and selling an upscale car is difficult unless you are trading it in.
People are really weary about private party sales and almost always prefer a higher price from a dealer since they believe they will get a better deal or better service.
So when you buy a car like this.. you have to be prepared to own it for a while and lose some cake on the trade if you are trading down to a camry let say. Now if you are trading up to an RL that's a different story.

I have been very successful selling cars through Yahoo Auto in the SF Bay Area. Sold my 95 Legend 6-speed coupe in Nov. 93 for $10,500 and KBB was $6,900. Took less than 2 weeks.

You have to remember, rare cars that have followers (like your Legend) are very sought after and the pricing doesn't always follow KBB anymore. Most cars in this unique category stop depreciating after a certain age. The car has to be old enough though.
For instance, a friend of mine bought a MINT 91 NSX with 8000 miles 4 years ago. He paid $37k. If he were to sell the car today (with 9500 miles), I don't think it's difficult to find a buyer who would pay $37k for it.
I'm guessing, in 8 years, the TL 6MT with nav in excellent condition and low mileage will stop depreciating. At least, it depreciates very slowly. But cars with high mileage and young age will depreciate like a rock.
Patience is the key here........ The 6MT TL has a small piece in the market, but it will sell. Just update your ad with photo and better write-up, and be patient. You'll sell it.

It's been on ebay for $23900 for 5 days. I have about two hours left, no bids, 45 watchers, 475 views, many questions, no bids. Boo Hoo. Maybe it will sell within the last 2 hours here.

That is always a big turn off for buyers.
Just my .02 cents. Don't take it personal just trying to help you out.
