Looks pretty obvious to me;
That is absolutely part of the crank counter-weight.
And something def happened to the counter-weight that I circled above; for some reason it's the only one that's been knife-edged?? I feel the two are related.
Someone absolutely touched the crankshaft for some reason or another, and in a very backyard hack-job special sort of way.
And the fact that you took all those pics without rotating the crank at all shows that you haven't fully inspected the crankshaft 100%.
What's going on with the engine that made you pull the heads, drop the pan, and remove pistons and rods? You're this far along, just pull the bearing caps and drop the crank.

But if you look at the set just above that, you can see that it is tapered as well, just not shiny.
No matter, I'm curious the history here as well. This engine needs to come out completely for a rebuild or replacement.

Judging by that crank trigger wheel, is that a j35z block? If so, I have a spare j35 crank not in use from a j36 project.
