what's a good starting negotiation price?

I like to get some opinions from you guys about the starting negotiation price.
I want 05/Auto/Navi/A-spec and a few options. Here is the MSRP of those values.

Base-34,900
A-spec-6,500(one dealer quoted this, but I assume it’s BOGUS)
All-Season Mats-132
Trunk tray-99
Body side molding-175
Wheel locks-49
----------------------------
MSRP total $41,855 + Destination($570) = $42,425

Now, obviously nobody is dumb enough to pay that, but what amount should I start
first at beginning of negotiation and when should I walk out? What price
do you guys think is reasonable(w/o TTL, of course). My guess is $37,000 would be a really good deal, but feel free to tell me your thoughts(out-the-door price? hehe!)

I don't have trade-in nor finance so less factor here.

I live in Chicago suburbs and want to get that TL by this xmas.

Any suggestion or comment would be a great help!!

Thanks and enjoy your TL!

First thing I'd do is check to see what the dealers paid for the car (invoice). You can find that on edmunds.com or kbb.com. You can also assume the dealers mark up the add-on's by at least 20-30%. I know you can get the all-season mats (I did) for $84 plus $9 shipping (from Curry Acura in Scarsdale, NY -- curryacura.com). You can probably get a similar discount from your price above. I don't have A-spec, so I can't help you with that. Don't let the dealer know you're interested in buying (I know that's tough to do). You lose your bargaining power.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your purchase. Have you thought abut the clear bra? It is great and makes a lot of sense if you plan to keep the car vs. lease and trade-in/up in 3-4 years.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think dealer offers 'Clear bra'. Anyways, why do you say I shouldn't let dealer know I have interest in the A-spec package? Do I negotiate just Auto/Navi first and after I settle with that, i'll negotiate the extras? I think the average for 05/auto/navi+Destination is around $33,400. I might just start there.

Thanks again.

Jason,
IMHO , if saving a bundle appeals to you, I would look into getting a 04 model. Prices are rock bottom right now. Its difficult to figure if the A spec package is worth it, or what real dealer cost is on the A package. In our case the dealer ended up throwing in wheel locks, trunk mat. Everything is negotiable and do not hesitate to question dealer prep and even transportation fees!! Most are dealer profit items anway. Good luck

Costco Pricing

If you have Costco Membership, some dealers may have a Costco Pre-Negotiated Price. This price would be a fixed amount, depending on model, above dealer invoice. Research the true dealer invoice before hand as I believe the number they show you is inflated to begin with.

The dealer will work out the total cost with accessories, set-up etc. This Costco Price is an everyday low price. Get the dealer to cut from this number inorder to motivate you to buy today vs tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

Muller in Schaumburg had a car with a lot of the stuff you want. I think it was black. Mcgrath in Morton Grove had a anthracite one with the same stuff. If you can pay the sticker price out the door OR better you are going in the right direction IMO.

The Costco price in my area is only $500 off MSRP. Not much of a savings. I saved the most time and money emailing the internet managers at different dealerships and let them compete for your business. The best offer I got was $1300 off MSRP and since the price was agreed beforehand the process once I got there only took 30 minutes.

start with $1000 over invoice and work up from there! They will think you are nuts but who cares, they want your business and will give you a ridiculous counter offer. Check out www.carbuyingtips.com for more helpful info! good luck.

i got an 05/ssm/ebony/no-nav in portland, or for $1250 off msrp! and it wasn't easy. they are selling like hot cakes at IHOP here.

What region are you willing to consider purchasing from? Would you consider someplace out of town like Acura of Cleveland?

I would contact via the internet all the dealers in the area you're considering & ask for their price quote on '04/05 with navi, then follow up with those that respond with reasonable offers about the A-Spec. The mats, tray & other stuff is too small to worry about. I got quotes on that stuff from a couple of different dealers; many will throw it in.
