Whats the best Synthetic Oil
I have almost 7,000 miles on my 07 TL-S. What Synthetic oil would you
suggest? Also should I start doing my own oil changes? Years ago I use
to do all my oil changes because of saving $$$. But the last 15 years I
have always had the dealer do it so it was on record there.
Besides going Synthetic engine oil, I would like to change the trans to
Synthetic also. I have an automatic. What do you suggest here???
I think its best to have the dealer do the trans, but any opinions on this
is welcome. Many people say they don't let the dealer do ANYTHING on
their cars. I can understand, I have read MANY HORROR stories about
dealers nowadays. Thankyou very much Jeff D.

I personally use Mobil 1 synthetic, but im sure everyone has their own opinion on what oil type to use. I would recommend also using a honda/acura oil filter when you do your own oil changes. As for the trans i would stick with honda/acura ATF you can use other stuff if you like, since you have a new car i would stick with acura stuff for warranty purposes. As for taking the car to the dealership, i work for a honda dealership and do all the work myself and make sure it is done right. if i didnt work for a dealership i probably wouldnt take my car there anyways because i am soo damn anal about my car, i would do the work myself at home!

The Mobil 1 is no longer the good stuff- formula changed to cheap tier
Penzoil Platinum FULLY synthetic- 6$ something per quart
look for those words FULLY Synthetic
is working very well in my 01 TL and K&N oil filter is my choice $10-12
Blackstone Labs for oil analysis and determine change interval 23$-33

Do you have any articles to back up the fact that Mobil 1 is no longer good stuff?

Although Mobil 1 is not their top tier product, it still is a full synthetic product. The other good thing is that I saw the 5qt container of 5w-20 at Walmart for around $19.
The info I looked at is here:
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...il_1_5W-20.asp
Product Description
Mobil 1 5W-20 is a high performance fully synthetic engine oil designed to exceed the industry's toughest standards and outperform all conventional oils. Mobil 1 5W-20 is engineered to help keep your engine running like new and extend engine life. Mobil 1 technology has been selected as original equipment by leading car builders such as Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillac, Mercedes Benz AMG, Porsche, Dodge Viper, and Dodge Ram SRT 10.
Applications
Mobil 1 5W-20 is recommended for all types of modern vehicles where this viscosity grade is recommended. This includes high-performance turbo-charged, supercharged gasoline multi-valve fuel injected engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks.
* Mobil 1 5W-20 is general purpose engine oil for all types of cars where this viscosity is recommended including Honda, Ford, and other major carmakers
* Mobil 1 is not recommended for 2-Cycle or aviation engines, unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.

Can't go wrong with Mobil 1.
That having been said, I have always been a Castrol man when it comes to imports. I usually go with their syn-blend (forget the name) which kind of splits the difference in price between their full-syn (which tends to be higher than Mobil 1) and their dino oil.
But, last time I was in Wally-World, I was checking prices on full-syn and the new Penzoil is the cheapest by about $2 on the 5-qt. Castrol is still highest. I may try the Penzoil Platinum next time around, if they have the 5W-20.

I use Royal Purple. Best thing I have ever done to the car. Runs so much smoother. I use 10W 30. I got 68K on my car and a little more protection never hurt. You should try it.

A coffee straw is made to flow coffee through the way it should, a normal sized straw would be appropriate for a milkshake...what happens if you drink a milkshake with the coffee straw? Little or no flow will occur...this is just my

I run Mobil 1 in the TL. Bought a couple quarts of the 5-20 and a few of the slightly heavier stuff, can't remember the exact viscosity. I'm currently in Vegas and it's hot as hell around here. Will go back to straight 5-20 when it cools off.
In the turbo car I run regular oil because it sticks to parts better over time and I only start the car every few months. Plus I change the oil every 500 miles so there's really no reason to run synthetic. For whatever reason, everytime I've torn down a motor, they have less wear with the regular oil. With the same weight oil, I have more oil pressure with regular oil and on startup the pressure comes up quicker.

So each of us loves the oil we run and think its better than all the others
Blackstone Labs gets asked whats the best oil all the time
They run DINO oil in all their personal engines...
synthetics extend change interval providing you perform a good engine internal cleaning- seafoam the crankcase- first
then 10k or more on fully synthetic ask fsttyms1

I agree with your post but I have a problem going that many miles on an oil change. I haven't heard of the Seafoam internal cleaner but it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Every few oil changes I will buy the $.99/quart oil and run it for a day and then change it again with synthetic, sort of the same thing.... kind of.
While the synthetic may not break down as quick, at 10,000 miles you are going to have all kinds of contaminates and fuel dilution not to mention the filter is probably being bypassed.

Those of us on long intervals probably change the filter and take an oil sample to be tested
Dino oil is regular oil which is fine for most cars and applications
Azine members seem to want the very best for their car so run synthetic
the built in oil reminder on your car doesnt go off for 7500 miles
read up on seafoam= lots of converts and believers here!

I don't care what the oil reminder says. An internal combustion engine is an internal combustion engine. It's still going to contaminate the oil and dilute it with gasoline.

How exactly is this done. I had my first oil change done @ Acura at about
4500 miles. I have 7000 miles now and want to change to Full Synthetic
myself. Also how do I zero out the computor? So its back to 100% ?

kris is fsttyms1 = fast times won! He is Moderator-resident guru of gen2
look in the gen 2 thread Seafoamed the Ol TL for complete details
Its the same stuff used in the $129 fuel induction Service at dealer except we do it better 10-15$ total parts and 30 minutes of your time including a freeway blast to clean out the carbon afterwards...Finally a repair thats fun!
Check owners manual or search gen3 for oil minder reset instructions- on gen2 it involves holding 2 trip reset buttons and turning on the key
Which oil and filter did you choose of the dozen offered as suggestions?

As long as the bottle says FULLY Synthetic then its good for our cars
K&N and Mobil 1 oil filters nearly identical and good choices

I also did my first oil change last week. I did some EXTENSIVE research on the forum on things like "when to do your first oil change", "what brand of oil to use", and "what weight of oil to use"?
I suggest you to read the following threads and pay special attentions to posts by RoadRage and SodaLuvr. I believe they're oil gurus. (BTW, these threads are all from the 3G garage.)
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111549
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111590
https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/great-trance-track-111490/
FYI, I did my first oil change at around 5K miles and used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30. I would have used 5W-20 if I could find a 5-quart jug here in Vancouver.
Good luck!

The K&N and Mobil 1 filters are highly rated and way better than OE
Penzoil Mobil Redline- take your pick as long as the bottle says FULLY synthetic
5-30 is better for our engines- the 5-20 was a way to scrape a tiny increase in mileage from the engine DURING EPA test for some govt regs about corporate average across the models-
the 5-20 offers less resistance but the 5-30 is better for engine parts

Road Rage likes a 30 weight oil with as little spread between the summer and winter ratings. E.g. 10W-30 because used oil analysis show it holds up a little better against shearing because of fewer VIs (viscosity improvers). RR holds that Honda/Acura recommend 5W-20 because the Feds make them recommend what they used in their fuel economy and horse power rating protocols. He feels that, if not for that, they would prolly recommend 10W-30 like most car mftrs in this country. Note that in Europe, the performance autos usually recommend 10 or 20W-40.
That made sense to me so I followed RR's advice and, in addition, followed his other advice to add 15 oz. of Valvoline MaxLife Engine Protector to the Mobil 1 for its molybdenum content. Honda/Acuras come with high moly content. The factory warns in the owner's manual not to change the oil before the MID says to because it is "special break-in oil." UOAs show the only thing special about it is the high moly content.
In fact, the Havoline that you bought happens to have almost the same moly content as the factory fill from Acura and is a highly reputed oil. You can't go wrong with either 5W-20 or 5W-30. They are both good. Their thickness or viscosity is quite similar. In higher heat and stressful operation, I would feel better with the safety margins of the 5W-30 but it's a matter of personal preference. Neither will hurt the TL. You might give up a slight edge on the fuel economy but I doubt you would notice it. It might amount to an extra 5-10 miles range per tankful. Maybe.
Equally important is to get a good filter. Mobil 1, Purolator Pure One, are good. Stay away from Fram IMO. Their construction leaves a lot to be desired. That's my personal opinion and not that of Acurazine.com.

Isn't Redline Full Synthetic oil a Honda product??? Wouldn't that be best?
I am going to see where I can get Royal Purple and Redline. And I will check for the K&N
oil filter also. I am worried Mobile One isn't as good as it use to be.
As for the Seafoam flush b4 changing to Full Synthetic, I don't need it, my car has only
7,000 miles on it. I don't think its carboned up yet. I just put a pint of Seafoam into
about 10 gallons of gas. I will run out that fuel then just change my oil and filter.
This should be fine,,, Correct ???
ONE more thing,,, I think I should get 5w-20, I don't want a thicker oil, I think
5w-30 might be overkill. What do you think of this ???

Most are obsessed with heavier weight oil, which is overkill, and not needed this day and age with the oils available. Stick with the recommended viscosity.
The Z06 Vette comes with Mobil 1 5-30, and if you deviate they will void the warranty. Even if you use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5-30 GM will void the warranty.
This in no way is to indicate that Honda/Acura will void the warranty should a substitute be used, but just to indicate that the oil recommended by GM is mandatory and not be altered.
Just my

One on the right for me
I use Pennzoil, though as I've mentioned several times, I use it because I don't pay for my oil changes. I've also used Mobile and would probably use it if I wasn't getting the oil for free, though I'd rather kill myself than shop at Wal-mart so I'd have to come to terms with the high price at the auto shop.
