What is your cost of gas per year?
I was talking with some friends and the question came up about how much we spend on gas per year, so I though I'd post the question here:
I sure of y'all have had the experience of owning a V4 sedan (regular fuel) and then a V6 (premium fuel).
Taking the average number of miles driven per year (15,000), what would yall say is the cost of gas for you over a year? I am intersted in figuring out the price difference in gas between driving a TL-S and four-banger Camry.
I fill up about every 10 days or so, so about 36 times a yr. Lets say $50 is average tank fill up price. I guess I spend around $1800 on gas in my 97 Camry.
Premium is probably around $4-$5 dollars more per fillup (totally guessing here). But do you go through gas that much faster being a heavier, bigger vehicle? What are your numbers looking like for your TLs? Specifically, 07/08 TL-Ss?
Curious to see the responses.

Look at your average mpg and figure it out with the annual mileage.
I fill up every 3-3.5 weeks so gas is hardly a part of my budget.
By running premium fuel you get better mileage, enough to more than make up for the additional cost at the pump so be happy your car requires premium. Of course if the 4 cylinder Camry is DI, it's a game changer.
Engine size has nothing to do with fuel requirements.
Sometimes I fill up each payday which is every 2 weeks with just over half a tank usually. I can make it a whole month but that's going until the light comes on which I don't like. The second half always goes quicker than the first half.

Let's do some math here...based on published EPA highway MPG and fuel prices I pulled out of my rear today. I only fill my car up every month or so and never pay any attention to the price of gas since it is completely out of my control.
15000 miles per year
Camry = 31mpg = 483gallons @ $3.49 = $1685.67
TL-S = 29mpg = 517gallons @ $3.79 = $1959.43 ($273.76)(14%)
So it looks like based off EPA ratings, the TL will be more expensive to drive which is not a big surprise at all. If it is a surprise, then you should not be driving nor looking at a TL.
Now where the bigger difference will show up is city MPG instead of highway.
Camry = 23mpg = 652g @ 3.49 = $2275.48
TL-S = 20mpg = 750g @ $3.79 = $2842.50 ($567.02)(20%)
We all know the TL is a gas hog at slower stop and go speeds. If your average MPH is under 25, there is a good chance the TL MPG will be in the teens while the Camry stays in the mid-20s.
And for those that want to get into the regular (87) vs premium (91+) battle, there are plenty of threads on here that show that there is MPG loss in the TL on lower octane and usually ends up costing you more in the long run.

Are we really comparing a floaty 4 banger to a high compression engine
in the S. ??? I mean if you can rock the S, fuel use/expense is irrelevant.
Fwiw, I consistently get 9-10L/100km equaling 520-540km total
in the 6MT and I love it.

We're in the same city and you use half the gas i do.

That's almost identical to mine. Nothing to worry about, just too much low speeds and idling.
The main advantage to high compression is mpg, more so than power.
There are some seriously high compression 4 bangers.

my commute is 12 miles total per day, sometimes i mix it up by biking.
I fill up maybe once every 2 weeks if that (i drive a bit on the weekends with friends or fam). it's awesome.
i used to do 30k a year on an old civic..this was around 2010-11 when gas was ridiculous.

I bought the car in 2007 May....it had 62K miles on it and was a 2005 model....
I lost some fuel logs (from 62K-79K miles)....am sitting @ 176K miles now and here is a little snapshot of the log:
Total Gallons tracked: 3,973.21
Total Miles tracked: 95,778.00
Overall Avg Gas Mileage: 24.11
so 4000 miles from 21st May 2007 - 19th September 2013...76 months....roughly 53 gallons/month....@$3.75/gallon (currently) = $200/month....$2400/year
