I was interested in buying a 06 Acura TL, but the seller said that its an American Vehicle. I just had some questions before buying it.
- if i would have to pay extra tax?
- Can i change my gauge to make it Canadian in KMs?
- Will i be able to get a vehicle history for American cars?
- How would i know if its stolen or not?
- If i take the VIN number to ministry of canada would they be able to pull up information on the vehicle?
- Are there any other things that i should be concered about?

Check out the RIV site for all the information you will need. Brought a new bike over a couple of years ago without any issues. Just be sure to read everything carefully and have all your documentation in order.

If you're thinking of buying it from Ideal Fine Cars, DONT. When I was searching for my TL, they had a ton of them even 07/08 Type S's with Aspec kits. They were all american, and when I looked at them carefully, they've all been in minor/major accidents. I checked their carfax and accidents were reported. I then looked around their showroom, and ALL their cars have some sort of damage to them.
Take your time test driving a bunch of different ones to see which one has the quietest engine noise, best build quality, etc. I went through 15 TL-S's before I picked mine, took about a month and a half. You have even more to choose from if you're looking for the 06 base, but try to find one with an A-spec kit.

mines an american tl-s, when they come into canada the dealer has to install drls, you cant change miles to kms, unless you swap the entire gauge. the only thing you can change is the miles to km on the navi. and american models have DISPLY mode button, whereas canadian models do not. : )

We've got plenty of TLs here to choose from. Why do you want to buy from the US?

How is it cheaper? Any difference in the exchange rate is obliterated by the cost of shipping a car up here.

Yeah I don't see the point in doing this.

I imported a US 06 TL into Canada last year. It is cheaper in the US and after exchange, tax, DTRL and inspection it saved me about $2000-$3000. Of course you still have to shop around, compare and bargin.
Anything left on the warranty will NOT be honored after you import it.
You do need to install DTRL in a US 06 TL.
Also I drove it up myself so there was no shipping charges.
There is both miles and km on the guage so nothing needs to be changed. The kms are just smaller print size than the miles.
You pay the GST (HST) when the car crosses the border. But you would pay that on any car bought in Canada anyway. If your buying from a US Dealership make sure they know you are exporting it to canada so you do NOT pay any State tax.
I installed the DTRL myself using the acurazine DYI linked below. You need to do this before taking it for the inspection at Canadian Tire, but doesn't have to be done before it crosses the border.
It was my first time importing a car. You have to jump through a few hoops but it's not that difficult.

Well as far as i know the TL i am looking to purchase is already brought/imported to Canada, so i assume the warranty is voided. Its not from Ideal Fine Cars, i didn't hear good things about them either. Its a 2006 TL with only 22k on it which seems a bit weird and fishy to me, unless the guy didn't drive it at all. I asked him for the vin number, so i'll check carfax and hopefully they have a record for it.

Additional information if you are planning to buy in the US and would be driving it back to Canada: Your insurance will not fully cover you until the car is registered in Canada. That means during 'the day' you are driving it to Canada, you have less insurance coverage for the car. Not that it's a big deal but just information for you to kow.

2 more tips that I do not know if it is on the RIV site...
1) You have to get a temporary driving permit from the US State that you are getting the car. Remember that you don't have a registered plate number the day you are driving the car from the US.
2) While the Canadian Customs is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, the US side that handles exporting of cars out to the US is not. Check their website on what time the are open so you don't spend time on the border overnight.

Get a Canadian spec TL man, there are lots up here to choose from but it just takes patience in finding the right one. A friend of mine had a US spec 2006 TL given to her from her mother on her 20th bday and it was very hard trying to sell it unless your selling it at a way wicked deal, but up here in Canada (Calgary anyways) nobody really cares for US spec cars unless its like a mercedes AMG Black series or something.

Keep Right Except to Pass
The speedometer has both, but for some stupid reason the odometer is miles-only. With a digital odometer there's absolutely no reason why there couldn't be a toggle button or other way to select the units of measurement on the odometer (a feature I've seen on a number of other cars), but for some reason the TL doesn't have that feature. You can set your Navi to use kilometres (which the voice mispronounces as "kill-AH-meters," incidentally) to match the road signs, but unless you have the conversion factors for distance pretty well fixed in your mind you might be better off leaving the Navi set to miles so that the directions match your odometer.

Yes, you need to purchase from your insurance provider a "Binder for Owner's Interm Certificate of Insurance". Mine was $78 for 10 days. The cost would vary depending on how much coverage you want.
Also you get a temporary tag number from the US (the dealer gave me mine at no charge). After you cross the border into Canada you need to go to an insurance provider and get a Provincial temporary tag number (this was also no charge from my insurance provider).
Ten days should give you plenty of time to add daytime running lights if needed, get inspections done and then register & insure the car.

If it was already imported into Canada it would already have the daytime running lights because it is needed to pass inspection and be licenced. If it's already been through the import proccess it's a Canadian registered car and nothing different to do to purchase than any other Canadian car.
Only 22,000 k is extreamly low. A year ago my 06 had 33,000 miles (53,000 k) and I thought that was low. Definately get a carfax check for any vehical you think about buying. I would be worried it might be a rebuild and been off the road for a while. Get someone you trust and knows what they're doing to check it out before purchasing. It might just be a great car with low milage.
How much are they asking for it?
If it's too low that could also be a red flag.

Thanks guys, i appreciate all of your recommendations. GLV, he was originally asking for 15K but now i see that he reposted it for 16500. I assume he was getting way to much demand for it. At the moment he said its at the shop gettin the DVD player fixed so i didn't get a chance to look at it yet. I'll definately do a carfax on it prior of buying it.
