What To Look Out For In Buying A TL?
Hello Everyone,
I'm currently in the market for purchasing a automatic TL, possibly 04 or 05. Is there anything I should look out for? Are there any defects on this model car? Is it true that the trainy goes in less that 80k in normal driving. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm really looking forward to purchasing one and becoming an active member in your forum.
Thanks

isnt the 3rd gear transmission problem just for the MT? if you are looking for an auto you shouldnt have an issue about this. always check the title..make sure its clean. also you may want to check out the leather seats and make sure they dont have cracks in them..hopefully the previous owner took good care of the car. if you are interested in the WDP (white diamond pearl) TLs look out for the color mismatch between the body and the bumper.

go to the main page here for 3rd gen TL, and look at the thread titles for an idea of what probs occur- little stuff- warranty issues- rattles
The auto trans have an ongoing problem
As a gen2 owner-we got a court ordered special 7 /109 trans warranty.
because they fail so often and early
Gen 3- buy it from a dealer- CPO does not mean they ever took care of this car- its an inspection they perform- and with that- they will sell you a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty-
I would not buy a gen3 without that coverage or beyond
Trans are $4000
The brakes and rotors wear out- anything else is normal maitenance

That way, you'll never be one of the 10's of 1000's who didn't get it that wound up banging their heads into the wall afterwards wishing they had. All the associated voice control technology alone that comes with it makes it the way to go.
That screen is the heart of the interior.

Gentlemen--you should be more specific when telling prospective buyers about problems. The 3G 5AT transmission problem was limited to the earliest built, and threads in the 3G garage will tell them what VIN numbers to avoid, although there was a retrofit fix. There was a redo of the rear alignment early on. Some of the 04 Bluetooth modules couldn't understand English. If the car has been properly maintained these problems will have been dealt with already, but they should be checked. 04s had rattles and squeaks, but by now I would expect that a well-maintained car has had those fixed. There's presently a recall of 04s and 05s to replace a power steering hose and the wiper motor, at Honda's expense. 01tl4tl's advice is best. Read the threads, find a TL you like, do your due diligence, and prepare for a driving experience that will spoil you for anything that doesn't cost half again as much.

the best thing you can do is take the car to YOUR PREFERRED MECHANIC and get an prebuy inspection done.
a visual inspection of the car in areas that detailers ALWAYS miss will give you a hint about how the car was maintained (Inbetween seat coushins, trunk under the floor, cubby holes, etc) will also give you an idea......

So is it safe to say that the transmission problems were limited to a certain number of vins?

take the VIN number of any car you like and call acura- ask for history of car and if all the recalls have been handled
You would be surprised how many cars have recalls- free parts- waiting for them
Its important that everyone be registered on both acuras systems
1-800-382-2238 x5 gets a human who can register you - and will answer questions on cars you are looking at.
I called them with 3 VINs and we walked thru each cars warranty history of repairs and what hadnt been done.
Everyone register at the 800, and here also by VIN-- check recall section- its about your personal car by VIN
http://owners.acura.com/registration...erstepone.aspx
you can also store the radio and nav security codes there for future use

RAR
see if you can get an updated navi map included. Those things go for about 200. check the fit and finish closely, look for any signs of repainting. make sure the body panels are all lined up, look for rock dings and chipped paint.
