What gas do you use?

is it that time of the month already for the "gas" thread.......??

This really is getting old. Can everyone agree that anyone that doesn't run premium is an idiot? Yes, good. Maybe people in the future will search and find the 300 existing threads on this. Or maybe we could just keep a thread going that always displayed for just the average AZ user called, "don't waste everyones time with starting a thread about what gas we use/should use...PREMIUM." Or have a sign in for all of the idiots out there who run regular and then quarantine them in there own little area.

I always fill up with premium, use Citgo, BP premium, and rarely Shell. Try to avoid Exxon, Sunoco, Crown/Texaco and do not buy gas from unknown brands. Prefer Citgo to anything because they, if use any, have the lowest concentration of ethanol than competitors. Ethanol is good for HP but bad for MPG.
The price difference of 87 vs 93- grade is about 20 cents a gallon, which is 2.60 for each 13-gallon fillup. It amounts to extra $135 per year at the rate of 1 fill up per week.

this thread is pointless. the dealer, the owner's manual, and the engine say put premium in your tank. so do it!!! and if you put regular in the tank...please be shot as you are ruining your engine and are not worthy of owning such a car. should anyone care where we purchase our gas to put in our cars??? what we put in the tank is given (PREMIUM). where we get it...who cares??

On particular TL and TSX, even on Civic SI. You must use premium. IT is recommend by manufacuture. If you have an Accord for example, I rather just use 87. Go with manual is the key. TL drivers pump 87 the engine will knock

8000 / 25 mpg * .20 (dif btw 87 & 93) = 64 yr or 5 dollars a month or 18 cents a day.
Think you can spare 18 cents a day?

Thanks for all the responses and my apologies to those that have seen similar threads. I looked and never saw a thread covering this, but hey, we all make mistakes.

a few hp drop. I thought about it long and hard before switching to 87, but
the car just isn't driven that much, about 8k miles a year, and I get rid of it for a new one every 5 years. I feel I sold horsepower for cash, but the TL just doesn't do it for me in the HP dept, so I'm not trying to stretch every inch out of it. Maybe I'm just getting old. LOL.

I'm sure someone already mentioned all of this but:
1. Let's say you average 15,000 miles a year, and only get 20 mpg. On average you pay $150 more per year for premium. (15,000 / 20) * ($.20 [difference between reg & prem]).
2. All cars are 'engineered' to run a certain way on certain octane fuel. The Acura TL is engineered to run on Premium Fuel. Sure, you can use mid-grade without a problem, but you will sacrifice power / performance & MPG. So, it costs the same in the end (you either pay for it up front and get better mileage, or save up front and fill up more often).
3. Check out "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline" developed by BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota. You can read more on your Acura Ownerlink website, but here's a link to the Top Tier Gas website. Many companies participate in this, but you'd be surprised how many don't. I think I read only 35% of gasoline companies participate. Shell does

Shell V-Power first choice followed by Chevron Techron Always Premium. I do seem to show that the Shell gives me maybe a tad higher MPG I usually get 22.5 average with V-Power and a tad lower with Chevron, but it does vary.

I was always under the impression that Amoco (now BP) had some of the best gas around. I suppose this doesn't necessarily mean that they don't, just not in all levels, or maybe not in all regions.
So quite possibly, all those years when I didn't have a car that wanted premium, but still paid a little more for Amoco 87 because I thought I was taking care of my car, it wasn't any better than cheapo gas. Now that the TL wants the 91-93, BP may be great gas, but this toptiergas.com doesn't say so.

Okay, just to satisfy my own curiousity, I found the following current info regarding BP (Amoco) Ultimate: "Amoco Ultimate premium fuels exceed Top Tier requirements with respect to its detergent additive treatment. BP believes that consumer interests are best served when the automotive and oil industries work cooperatively to determine the optimal mix of vehicle hardware and fuel standards. " This doesn't confirm or disprove my previous statement about other levels of BP gas...

the best mileage Ive ever gotten is 38mpg cruisin for 5-6 hours on 95 down to FL at 80....and I feel all the gas companies have the same "tier" gas I highly doubt the detergent they use makes a difference......its all coming from the same place.... G.W. Bush's house

With the BP gas card you get 5% cash rebate back on all BP purchases, which at the current prices makes it about 15 cents cheaper than the price on the pump...

I swear to god Holiday gas makes my car smell like eggs when i hit the gas hard.
Any other place does not. I switched fuels from holiday - something else, and never had an egg like smell again.
PS - I use diesel.

Anyway, I can't believe the issue of using Premium versus Regular is still being debated by some of you. This car has an 11.00 compression ratio. For you dummies out there who STILL don't understand what that means ........ USE PREMIUM FUEL ONLY !!! That's what the engine and ignition system in the 3G TL were designed to use. You think you're saving a little bit of money, but in reality, YOU'RE NOT!
As for brand, I find I get the best acceleration from Shell V-Power 93. On the west coast, all premium is 91, the MINIMUM octane rating the owners manual says you should be using.
Now here's a thread that should closed once and for all.

Ban all gas related threads or kick people out of AZ who start such stupid threads. Just put something in the terms of use about starting a gas related thread asking about using regular fuel will result in your permanent ban from AZ.
