What engine oil do you use???
I'm in the mind frame to start changing my own engine oil on my 06 Tl with 15,000 miles. I know that my Acura Dealer uses Valvoline 5-20w. Just coming off the Mobile 1 website, seems like they have oils that can last up to 5000 and 7500 mile intervals. What do you recommend?

Check out the 3G Garage... Tons of info on this topic in there.

I thought it was hard, but look for a black 5qt. bottle of castrol syntech...

Royal Purple 5w-20. Probably will use Penzoil Plantium next because it so cheap and easy to find compared to RP. RP is excellent but I have to use ebay to find my weight and from prior exp Penzoil syn is pretty damm good.

While you can use the Mobil 1 M-104 filter, the better one to use is the M-110. There have been numerous discussions of oil & filter on the board.

Mobil 1 5W-20
I use Mobil 1 and change at 3,500 to 4000 miles. I know this probably more frequent than required but some habits die hard. I use Mobil 1 is all me vehicles after the break in period.

Mobil 1 5W-20 with Mobil 1 oil filter M-104. You can also use the M-110 which is larger than the OEM Acura filter on the outside but I doubt there is any difference on the inside. If it has any advantage at all, it might be in greater heat disipation (marginally).
I figure if Acura thought a bigger filter would be better, they would have put it on there. They are the ones guaranteeing the engine. The cost is the same.

Clearance with the lower control arm has been mentioned as an issue with the M110. I've studied this numerous times on my 04TL. No way are the two going to make contact short of a massive crash that bends the right control arm at the same time the suspension is completely compressed.. Maybe they had a few make contact in 04 and made the change..?
Staying on topic I use 5W-20 Castrol Syntec in the "colder" months here in TX.. I switch to 5W-30 Syntec for the summer - and of course the M110. I do believe I achieve a 1-2 mpg increase in fuel economy with the 5W-20 (above the AC difference).
**4500-5500 mile intervals
Cheers

I have yet more questions. Does the computer actually monitor the degradation of the oil or does it judge the oil degradation on a time basis (time intervals) and reflects that in a percentage format? Also how many miles can be driven until you have to change the oil (Due Soon pops up). Now I ask because If I go fully synthentic, the oil change intervals can be anywhere from 10-15k or even longer.

Correct, the MID uses an algorythm that evaluates RPM, load, cold starts, idle time and other factors to recommend an oil change interval.
I ran the excellent Motorcraft synthetic blend to 5% remaining and performed an oil analysis and found the oil still had a good safety margin of TBN and wear metals were still very low. Plus, for less than $2/quart, it's hard to beat.

I will be coming up on my oil service soon. I also use the MID to tell me when to change the oil. I will either use 5w-20 Pennzoil or castrol synthetic.
My 97 Pontiac had almost 200k miles using the MID and synthetic oil.
Its a waste of oil otherwise.
I would not drive any car where I had to change the tranny fluid every 10k miles.
Again, big waste of money.
100k miles interval on synthetic fluid in the Pontiac GP GTP without any tranny failure. 50k miles currently on this interval. 47k. before I switched to synthetic.
I do work for a oil company, so thanks for keeping me with a paycheck

havokgroup: Honda Filter and Mobile 5-W20. I change my oil every 5K and tranny fluid every other oil change.
