Well I almost did it..

I almost traded in my 04' RRP TL for a 05' Magnum. For some reason, I miss my "Big Car" feel, and I like the looks of the magnum.

What do others around here think of it?

My father was gonna get the magnum instead of the TL, I agreed if he had gotten it with the V8 AWD, Navigation, climate control, blutooth. Came to about 40k. He would have spent about 35, no sunroof, no blutooth, and a few other things. My mother will eventually trade her minivan for it. Yes, a TL and a Magnum. With the HEMI. My advice would be to not trade the TL, and save up and get both. Even loaded the magnum has less features, and unless you really need the AWD and Space(we should have an AWD car, in case of winter emergencys, and I love home depot and have a dog). If you do choose the magnum, wait until dodge offers xenons and until the next model year. That car is hot though.

That 1 has got xenons, but they are not offered in the 05 model year.

Not a good trade imho. Take a good look at build quality and interior space. How about an MDX?

Magnum can be had with Navi, Bluetooth sunroof, not much lower equipment level than the TL. Plus 340hp!

loaded with roof rack etc the magnum can be had at 500 below invoice(at least from our dealer) so 36ish. We didnt get it. It is definatly a great car, only problem is chrysler reliability, but this thing felt pretty sturdy. I also hate to say it, but the HEMI 0-60 is faster then the TL, doin it in 6.1, and it tops out at 153 but is governer limited to 130 . However, there are gonna be tons of mods for it from jegs, already seen a magnaflow. The MDX is an SUV, the magnum is a station wagon, its much more powerful, not quite as comfortable, and IMO, looks a lot nicer outside, more badass. No Xenons though, and I really hate that. you could also go camping with it and sleep 2 people comfortable in the back. Over 8 feet of flat space. The thing looks really cool up close. Gotta go with the gray or black though, the red screams midlife crisis.

I have this little game I play driving on the highway to pass the time. I look for cars burning oil. So far, after years of playing the stupid game, 90%+ of the oil burners are Chrysler products. btw...nobody wins the game! Keep the Acura.

I had a Magnum last weekend. I used it to go to Montreal for the day to watch Canadian Grand Prix, 5 hour drive to Montreal.
The Hemi is awesome has power everywhere. However when you hit a bump the rear end felt really skittish, when you got over 160Km/h the aerodynamics outside sounded really loud not quiet. The seatbelts were too tight, the seats were uncomfortable, rattles at all speeds, Mileage on pure highway at 125 km/hr was 11.3/100 kms. (22 Mpg). Chrysler resales are not the best. We had a black RT with leather, nav & hemi. Straight line speed on smooth roads - awesome, don't try handling corners at high speeds or rough roads.
Overall car was fun to play with but I missed my TL

I love the FX, problem is if you want to even tocuh the magnum you are looking at the FX45, that thing is a LOT more expensive. The milage on teh magnum isnt horrible considering its got a 5.7 litre V8 Hemi. When we test drove it it felt relativly smoothe, but it definatly was not the quitest car in the world. The charger looks sick, but I would only get it with the SRT-8, and thats pretty expensive, I would probably prefer looking ath the CTS-V.

I sat inside the Magnum before I bought my TL and was instantly turned off. For some strange reason I really don't like that car. Plus, I see way more third gen TL's on the road than magnums. Now that new Dodge Charger that just came out looks good to me. I may go check it out on my next day off.

looks like a fun car to drive but i would not want to own it. i'm not crazy about wagons and the interior is no where near the TL's in styling. 340hp is very nice but i don't want to be at the gas station every 3 days to fillup the thirsty sucker. i know the hemi has the cylinder deactivation thing and is suppose to get ok mileage but with that kind of car who is gonna keep the foot off the gas. the charger looks pretty badass but again it looks like a nice car to drive and have fun with but i would not want to own. also when it comes to quality and reliabity american cars have lacked behind foreign makes. i wouldn't want to risk throwing down close to 40K for a dodge and have reliability issues.

Dodge cars in little time start to leak fluids, unless they have improved their quality in the past 2 years (stepdaughter, 3 friends and my boss) drive them, no Magnums just a Neon, Durango and a Viper.....all complain about the same thing....oil, transmission fluids in their driveway...( I have to clean my daughter's Neon leaks on a monthly bases off my driveway.... , it has been at the dealer for gaskets but keeps coming back the same...... )

Leaky fluids has never been a problem on any of our dodges...As for milage of the magnum its 24/27, it only runs on 4 cylinders accept under high speed and hard acceleration. IMO, it looks a lot better then the new charger and 300C.

It does kinda look like a hurse, at least in the pics. When you see it on road not so much, the thing is short, it looks like a "magnum"

Go rent one for the weekend.

Sorry but a TL is gonna whip a Magnum wagon, hemi or not. Please. The wagon is over 4000 lbs.

I would have had interest but they have minimal towing capacity.

I looked at the Magnum when it first came out. The outside looked great, great power, interior left me cold. Not bad, but I had just test driven a TL... There was no comparison. I also spend most of my time in the car...

also past experience made me leary of Chrysler. My wife drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Not happy with Chrysler's quality and service (front rotors 4x , tran, fuel pump, cam shft position sensor, RATTLES, all before 50k mi). Her next vehicle will be an MDX.

Check out their user groups and see how the car is doing.

Similar experience

My experience with Chrysler products pretty much mirrors NoRespects.

My Jeep GC has been equally as unreliable with the same brake problem (they have a "repair" kit that basically replaces the entire front brake assembly - the original brakes were inadequate), rear axle seals failing, turn signal multswitch failed. Drivers seat leather cracking. Door seals have all shrunk and pulled away from the door frames. Ominous noises coming from the HVAC air defection dampers. Shocks wore out. Miscellanious component problems. $2300 in repairs over 17 months, that started just after the vehicle went out of warranty.

All this before 34k miles (nope, no 7/70 coverage), and the vehicle has never been off the road. I'd hate to think of what would have failed had it been.

Now they're dropping their 7/70 drivetrain coverage as of 2006, which tells me their long term reliability isn't good enough and is costing them in warranty.

I'm done with Chrysler. No more. They're the company of smoke and mirrors. Their stuff looks OK on the surface but underneath it's rotten.

resale value???

from the current ALG guide(what all banks use to calculate residuals on leases-all models)

2005 TL($33670) - AFTER 36 mos(56%)$18855
2005 MAGNUM RT($38400)- AFTER 36 mos(39%)$14976

2005 TL($33670)-AFTER 60 mos(38%)$12794
2005 MAGNUM RT($38400)-AFTER 60 mos(25%)$9600

*total cost of ownership using list price less residual*

36 mos tl -$14815
36 mos magnum rt-$23424

60 mos tl - $20876
60 mos magnum -$28800

obviously there will be some variance but the deals start here. is the charger worth 8k more than your Tl??

I hate the look of the front end, the charger is a different story, though.

I do not like the cheap interiors of the domestics and the chryslers sure have them.

The leather interior is not that bad, I admit the center console could use a lot of work. I like the steering wheel too.
Unfortunatly its still better then the new 3 IMO.
