Weird MPG in my 04 TL, have a look.

hi guys,

im putting HESS 93 octane in my car, funny thing, i was on highway and i resetted my MPG computer. it started off with 37 mpg, then 35 and then it became 39 for about 5 mins. i drove about 15 miles, my avg speed was 66mph and avg mpg was 33.
if my car is doing this good on hwy, why my OVERALL avg mpg is 18/19 ? i dont understand. normally i get about 290-280 miles off my tank until the light turns on. i recently got this car, should i check something or my mpg is normal ?

thanks for reading

because, you then go to a city environment, where you do lots of stop and go driving.
maybe even idle for a while.

all highway miles, you can achieve up to 34mpg.
but once you start coming to stop lights/signs and take off, the vehicle's weight comes into play. it takes a lot to move a 3500lb vehicle.

It can help some. If you get the right one it can help that much. Or you can get one that says "Adds +15 horsepowerz!!!!" and it not really have the right hook ups and you can see a decrease in gas mileage and not really feel the 3hp you really got.

This made absolutely no sense. A intake is an intake.

You will not get a real increase in gas mileage with an intake.

City is where the TL suffers.

thats normal to have over 30 mpg if you reset before freeway. Once I took a trip to vegas and i got up to 36 mpg for a while. But in city i always get 18-20 and i drive 10% highway haha.

to put it simply, yes...it is normal.
It's a heavy car...once it gets going it cruises very nicely and is good mpg...but if you keep having to stop and get it going again, it'll cost you.

I have been able to get a consistant 24mpg combined in my TLS, but you have to be smooth with the gas pedal at lights and stop signs or the fuel milage will suffer.

street driving kills mpg. You'll be getting 25 at best on streets.

If you're doing long highway commutes you can be getting in the area of 30-33 mpg easily.

One thing's for sure, I think you would see quite a wide variation in mileage even if you could simulate the same driving style on everyone's TLs. I believe the culprits for lower mileage include all the things that everyone tries to look out for, but may not consistently, such as spark plugs, fuel injectors, quality of fuel, engine air filter, and many more. I recently changed my plugs, as well as underwent a tranny swap, so I'm sure my mileage will be affected. I did notice over the last 6+ years that my mileage did go down noticeably in the last 1.5. Perhaps it was the plugs, perhaps dirty something else or another.. we'll see..

Tires make a HUGE difference in MPG and so does the fuel you get. What's funny is that right after the 105K service I was getting crappy gas mileage like when the car was new, and now 5K later the car is running like a dream! I guess it takes some time for the new plugs, belts, etc to "break in" and get into sync with everything else.

well i live between the city, and "bum F@ck eygpt". so a lot of 45-55 mph speed limits if i go west. if i go east, the highest will be 45, but more likely 25-35.

a/c has put a decent dent in my mileage. but i guess my tips would be to search "hyper mileage" techniques. i run hills, will go below the speed limits for a few hundred feet, etc.

i've noticed i get better mpg's if i stay above 2.2-2.3k rpm, and under about 3.4k...try to keep in your mind a specific throttle level you need to accelerate decently in 5th&6th gears, and use that for 3-6th gears. 1st gear is just to get into second without knocking/bogging down, not to actually gain speed. then in second run it to 3.5k and get some decent throttle into the car. then go back to the light throttle. using higher gears to accelerate will use more gas than the lower gears, but 1st rev's to fast to really be worth it

that's about all i do. 74 mph is the speed where my car just gets killed in mileage, or i need to be cruising at about 85.

sidenote, i have old lumpy unbalanced rear tires. when i got 2 new ones after buying it, i gained about 2 mpg's on the computer. new air filter was about 1. new oil was about 1, need to do that again. still on the plugs from when i bought it, and as far as that is concerned it's probably the original set, since my timing belt is still original.

oh, and i have an intermittent CEL for my primary cat being semi clogged and throwing that code. (rotten egg smell under heavier loads/high rpm)

lol @ higher gears use more gas to accelerate than lower gears.

If you're trying to be a hyper-miler and you're in 2nd gear until 3.5k, you're "doin it wrong".

Nice and steady through each gear. Gradual acceleration from stops. If you're on level ground, shifting between 2k and 2.5k is all you need.

power vs throttle pressure...rpm will give you more power at a smoother rate. then you also get to get the quicker shift up higher, which means less time to lose momentum. staying to low in the rpm you get no timing advance. you throw fuel at the car to get nothing back. timing is where you get your gas mileage, and more timing=less fuel needed to make the same power, to accelerate at the same rate.

every gear up you go, the true load on the engine gets higher. meaning that if you stay at 20% through each gear, by the time you get to 6th the ECU is putting in more fuel than it was in 2nd.

please show your mileage to prove that what i do is wrong? honestly. either prove me wrong with a snapshot of your own trip computer, and/or try my theory for a tank and compare. i haven't seen a single person in any gas mileage thread post better combined mileage than i get without driving far more % on the highway.

Yikes, another MPG thread again. This one has been discussed many times and the answer for why the TL (or most other larger cars) suffer in city MPG is precisely why hybrids have better mileage in the city than highway (usually).

The average MPH in the MID photos is the answer to the TL mileage question: all the high MPG pictures above have an average speed of 60mph or higher (no idle time) and the lower mileage MID readings are below 30MPH (more idle time). While at a stop light, drive thru, warming up car in the driveway, and other scenarios the car is idling and not going anyway for ZERO MPG. A hybrid simply turns off the motor in these situations and gets doesn't take a fuel hit.

I see this everytime I fill up since I have a mile commute from gas station to office and the MID changes rapidly the first few miles after a reset. I usually get 15MPG because I get stuck at a light or two or 25 MPG if it's straight shot which is extremely rare. I usually get 18-19 for a tank reading because my MID speed is usually <25 MPH.

How much of an affect would aftermarket rims have on MPG's. I am getting 17 mpg with mixed city and highway driving on my way to work. I am going thru a full tank of gas in a matter of a few days. I currently have 19" Work Varianza T1S on and I'm thinking about going back to my stockies to save some money. Do you guys thinks this will help?

I just entered my mileage info for the last 4 months into www.fueleconomy.gov: 21 fill ups worth of data in under 10 minutes. It goes pretty quick and I cross-reference the MID calculation with actual and the MID is darn close. There was just one bad MID calcuation where it was off by 1.5 MPG while the rest were < .5 of actual.

The other thing I noticed while entering this data is that the EPA city estimate is 18MPG. The EPA had a 26 hwy, and 21 combined estimates as well. I guess anyone complaining about 18mpg in an urban environment and wondering what is wrong with their car should take a break. The car is performing as it should and there is nothing wrong with it from a mechanical perspective. I live in an urban environment and get a 20MPG lifetime average for 5 years worth of driving.

It would be nice if others could add their data to the EPA database so you can see and share your data with others. I must be the loan CA driver for the 2006 TL holding down the average with 20.1 while some people in Maryland are getting a 29.4 average- at least they did in 2007 when they last reported it. Looks like I'm the only one keeping the data current with someone in New Jersey posting in January last year. Take a look here:

Edit...I had a blond moment. You could have done some city driving and been doing more than 60 on the highway, but the numbers were just so perfect and even then, I don't see how 30 mpg would be able to be maintained. 29-30 mpg is usually what I average at a dead 60 mph on flat ground.

My Best MPG 100% highway. This was on a stretch of I-10 in Texas.

Another stretch in Texas. This one had alot of idle time because i averaged 70-80 mph the entire trip through Texas. The speed limit is 80mph.

And a stretch in Oklahoma. There was around an hour of idle time on this one

Well yes tires do make a difference because how much wider and bigger the wheels are which increases grip which makes the car pull that causing more gas to be wasted but the tl only gets an avg of 18 mpg. One tip is try to not to accelerate to quickly in the city. (correct me if I'm wrong)

after market intake doesn't improve MPG. i get 20MPG before and after aftermarket intake. it all depends on how you drive and road condition.

^right, because the ECU controls the A/F ratio and it will always remain the same.
therefore, a CAI wont improve gas mileage.
