Weird discovery regarding cruice control and the TL 6mt

So I was driving home from work last night in my 07 Type S 6mt and for whatever reason I decided to see what happens if you hit resume while in neutral. I just assumed that if the car was not in gear that the cruise control system simply would not work. To my surprise after starting to slow for a red light I pushed the clutch in and put the car in neutral. Before I got anywhere near the light it turned green. So before I put it back in 6th gear I hit resume for the heck of it while still in neutral (just to see what would happen). To my surprise the RPM's shot up pretty quickly so I quickly canceled it. Not a big deal or anything, but I just found it weird that cruise control will try to work even with the car in neutral lol. Anyone else ever notice that? I have not tried that in any other manual car I have owned, but I dont think they would do that would they?

That is interesting. I never thought about that scenario, but it does make sense. As I remember, aside from the on/off switches and such, the CC verifies a minimum speed has been achieved before allowing it to be set. This is approximately 35 mph. The system cut offs are brake switch and clutch switch. So as long as the clutch or brake is not depressed and you are moving above the minimum speed, I would think that it would engage. I will check it out on my Toyota since the TL is auto.

Cool thanks for testing it out guys. I just think its goofy that they designed the system this way that it would allow it to try and engage cruise control when your not even in gear.
Im sure its self explanatory but just set a speed on your cruise control and disengage it by pushing the clutch in and putting the car in neutral. Then try and press resume and see what happens. My car actually tried to resume cruise while not in gear. Just be ready to hit the brakes or press cancel quickly because my RPM's shot up somewhat quickly. Weird stuff

Even my 93 civic does this lol every vehicle I have owned will do it, even an auto. What's bad is when the music is up and your buddy knocks the vehicle out of gear and you don't realize the motor bouncing off the rev limiter

I think most current AT's have an interlock to prevent this. I know my Fusion does. Not sure about the AT TL.

I've noticed this in my 6MT TL-S also. I've not done it in a while, but I did the same as you out of curiosity. Simply pressing either the brake or clutch quickly stopped the RPMs from revving too high (as expected). My guess is that there is no sensors to detect that the car is actually in gear and given we have a rev limiter, I can't imagine there is any real danger of engine damage involved with letting the cruise control rev, but I haven't tried to let it go that high.

With the car's ability to rev-match your downshifts (above 3k rpm), you would think it would be able to tell what gear your in. I guess it just does that based on speed & rpm tables....

If you're referring to the 3rd gen TL Type S, it does not have the ability to rev-match downshifts.

You'd think they'd also implement a minimum speed condition still? Surely they have speed sensors for the CC itself..

But I can see how the car wouldnt discriminate based on gear..since you can be at the same CC speed in different gears, the computer just wants to maintain said speed..
