A very expensive curb check

This actually occurred at the end of August (~25th), and I got my car back October 15. I would have posted from the beginning but I knew this was going to be a long agonizing wait, and a thread wouldn't help my emotional suffering! Here's what happened: (I'll actually keep it pretty short, kinda tired just got home from work)
I was going to my buddies house to hang out for the night, irrelevant but that was my destination. There's a little hill before making a left onto his street, but before you actually make the left there's a slight crest in the hill. I estimate I was traveling around 25-30 MPH going up the hill, I've made this trip a hundred times, nothing out of the norm. As I reach the peak of the crest, I begin to make the left onto his street, however, I began to drift, losing control of the turn. No big deal, I'll correct it before it's too late. No dice. It had started raining slightly before I reached this point so the ground was actually quite slippery. Basically what I think happened is once I hit the peak of the crest, my suspension had been slightly lifted so all the weight of the car wasn't on the ground, and my tires slipped, and inevitably slid into a 4" cobblestone curb. Initially I was angry because once I heard the impact, I thought I was going to need to be replacing my waffle type-s rims. In hindsight, I wish that's all it was. I take a look around the car and realize the freakin passenger side curtain and lower airbags had deployed. (Let me say that the deploying of the airbags is REALLY LOUD!). After a short period of time I decided it would be necessary to slowly roll to my friends house and call the proper assistance instead of waiting on a hill. I arrive to the cul-de-sac and turn off the car and wait for help to arrive. I was a little shaken up since this was my first incident involving a crash with an automobile, so it took me a bit to comprehend the situation. At the end it all, I'm glad I'm ok and I didn't manage to harm anyone except a little cobblestone curb

Except that little cobblestone curb got the best of my TL. My little fiasco that I thought would just run me two new rims a side skirt and a bumper was just a tad more intricate than originally suspected. Fast forward two months and $17,000 later, my car is back at home fixed better than new. The shop I brought it to (Quality Auto Body, Vails Gate, NY) held my hand through every step of the repair, explaining in full detail why such and such part is being replaced and why it will effect a certain aspect of the car. I HIGHLY recommend them if you're in my area; best work around, period.

I can only ramble on so much, so I'll get down to the good stuff. There's so many pictures online of internal parts and what not, so I'll just post a few to give an idea of what the hell happened.

>Rim got the most of it

>In surgery, this pic really serves no purpose..except a reminder to fill my washer fluid...and to avoid this situation ever again!

>Lost my bumper inlays with the new bumper so I did 3M di-noc carbon fiber. Looks OK for now, the color of the di-noc is carbon brown or something like that, I think it blends too well with the paint so I'll change it to black

>Back home in my garage!

There's literally 100+ pics I don't feel like snaggin' em' all. In the least specific way possible: 4 new tires, 3 new rims, new side skirt, new bumper......and now for the most specific way possible for the people that are nosey and would love to know exactly what was replaced, here's the supplement:

I think roof is just a category and headliner falls under it. The headliner gets really messed up when the side head airbags come out

Well 19 years old .. going too fast on a corner on a wet road .. ... at 25 MPH the suspension wouldn't be unweighted unless it was a hell of a crest on the hill. In reality its not the car or the circumstances .. its the link between the brain and the gas peddle.

How did a 4" curb damage your front bumper that high up? You have marks on the bumper as high as the top of the tire.

Any time there is fresh rain on an area that hasn't had rain for a bit the gas/oil residues on the road are very slippery ... so speeds should be reduced.

Called a learning curve .. expensive one in your case .... just be glad someone wasn't walking thier dog thier and you pinch them between you and the curb killing someone.

Sorry bout the non-compassion but self inflicted issues don't need it .. lets just hope you and others learn from this.

Sorry, but I'm with Jesstzn on this one. Not buying the 25 mph impact with 4" curb story...

At any rate, the key thing is that a lesson was learned and that others might learn as well.

Glad your car is back up to speed!!

That's insane. Never would've thought, by just looking at the damage, that that would be 17 grand. My car would have just been totaled. I'm surprised yours wasn't at that cost, but then again you have a TL that's a little newer. Sucks dude, but glad to see the body shop did a good job. Does it drive any different?

I'm pretty sure the $17,000 and two months of repairs took care of that lesson.

$17K doesn't make sense. That's more than half the price for an 07 TL-S. Anyways at this point, it's water under the bridge.

That's why my parents had me driving a $3000 jeep when I was 19

Unless there was ice, there's no way you lost it going 25 mph, especially not bad enough to bend your suspension that severely.

Those airbags can be expensive, but how many quotes did you get? This is the first car I've owned with more than one airbag lol, so maybe I'm underestimating the cost of them, but you got taken for a ride by that shop.

I only skimmed the list of parts, but I see they charged you for each suspension component, then tacked on like $10 a bolt, $4 a washer, and $40 a bushing...

Also, there's no way they replaced two of each suspension component. That bill is loaded. Might need to report them for insurance fraud unless I missed something and these cars are made out of aluminum foil.

[edit] I can only see one pic of the damage. Was the front right wheel the only one damaged? The bill says they replaced three wheels..... wtf? They replaced your A/C condenser? I really doubt that. Was this "curb impact" really violent enough to damage anything inside the engine bay? Or is this shop just that full of ****?

+1 Driving experience is a big factor. I've been driving for 15 years now. I just shake my head when I see kids speeding through turns. At least you're ok though.

Buy whatever story you'd like, I'm not here to please anyone, just share what happened. The car was in an accident before I got it and I don't believe it was fixed properly, so I think this one took care of most of that. Insurance did take care of it thankfully, a $500 deductible. When I go out in a few I'll stop by and carefully take a picture of the bastard curb. I was a little tired after waking up for school at 6AM, as this occurred around ~1AM. Sorry, things happen.

By the way, you go ahead and hit a curb flush with your turn and tell me 25 won't take care of your suspension.
edit: and the black paint chips above the wheel had previously been occurring, the accident didn't cause that.

My wife did the same thing in her G37 about 6 months ago. She was doing about 80mph and it did 13k in damage. Couldn't tell from looking at the car too much, but once you looked underneath it was a whole new world. And see just put a new MXP exhaust on her car before it happen too. Sorry to hear that tho. Good luck on the repairs cause we are still finding stuff that should have been fixed and Geico is still paying for stuff we find.

I know I underestimate my speed alot, especial when your familiar with the terrain. Man, I just bought my 04 TL for less than what you paid for the repairs. Man that is CRAZY.

25mph is more than enough to take out the suspension.

I just can't understand how it can cost that much.

I hit a curb and I estimate the impact speed (not the speed I was going before the incident started) to be 15-20mph. I got the subframe, steering rack, control arm, bumper cover, 2 rims, motor mounts, and a few other things replaced and I think it was 8-9,000. I'll have to look it up in the thread I posted on here.

I know it's easy to sit behind the computer and critisize others but $17,000 is very hard to imagine. Even taking into consideration 2 airbags deploying.

Doing it right is sooooooo expensive... back in 1995 my lil bro's civic clipped a retainer wall after he was cut off on the freeway... that cost about 6 or 7k... and his car looked about the same as yours did... I am just glad ur OK!

People need to keep in mind that in damage it was $11689.61. Not total repair cost. The body shop raped on labor. I don't know jack squat about the automotive repair industry, but their rate of $50 an hour for labor sure seems eh...great for the employees!

The ass end of my car bumped into a curb on ice at like 5MPH going through a roundabout in my neighborhood this past winter. Who knows if that did any damage? I feel no difference.

wow good thing you're okay. i don't see why everybody is criticizing the price of repairs or what the OP is saying. he's telling you an experience he went through. plus i don't think there would be any need to lie about anything.

Reminds me of the aftermath of my accident. I spun out going WAY over the limit and smashed my left rear tire into a curb. The car was literally on three tires with the impacted one bent like a broken arm. But, this doesn't make sense...I spun out and hit a curb 2-2.5x as fast as you did and I had no damage on my bumpers and barely any damage other than some scrapes on my side skirts...what the hell?

BTW: you should've pushed to have that sh* totaled man. I'm surprised insurance didn't total it simply because the airbags deployed.

17k is a lot but if insurance covers the repair then the shop will charge for everything and do all the work. They want to make money too. Good to hear things worked out.

Lol that made me laugh. I'll go take a picture of the curb now. Maybe it was higher than 4"? I'll take a ruler what the hell.

Minor bumps with the curb can really trash things... Was in a friend's car going through a parking lot one day and a pothole was lurking... swallowed a wheel and demolished the front end.
Quality over in VG does awesome work. There is a place in goshen that repaired my brother's lancer when he parked it on its side and they did a shitty job. If you were to look for a custom paint job around here or anything paint matched, I would recommend Orange County Auto body, they do spectacular work. I've heard nothing but good things about Quality and their collision repair.

>Actually 6". I just measured from the ground to the bumper and 6" doesn't even clip the bumper so right now I'm really stumped as to how the bumper got damaged. Maybe when the wheel collapsed the bumper was lowered enough to scrape against the curb. Who knows.

>The stone I managed to break. I get 17k and this is all the damage it does. Go figure.

>Just to give an idea of the height of the curb in correlation to the rim

>The crest

Maybe the front end lowered as you applied brakes and weight shifted forward. Hitting a curb that high will be enough to trigger the airbags and I can see how all that damage adds up.

Wow, that's a lot of money for running into a curb!

I wonder what your insurance premium is going to be like next year.

Glad to hear you're OK though!

Thanks for reminding us the need to take it easy out there with our TLs!
