Depends on what you're asking about. Oil changes are 15K miles. But, make no mistake, these cars are maintenance heavy and not cheap to repair.

ETA: Here's a ton of information about owning an E60 M5 - http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...tions-faq.html

Do they have anything similar to the E46 M3's Inspection I/II? Those are killer requirements for me regarding those cars & I'd hate to ever walk into a M5 purchase without knowing of a similar issue.

I just don't understand how it doesn't have a back up cam. Should be standard in all bimmers, much less the "M" editions. Anyways, nice upgrade. I'm still jelly ;D

No intervals anymore. It's all about condition now (similar to the 3G TL). You go through iDrive to check how many miles are left on: oil, brakes (fr and bk), spark plugs, etc. Warning - nothing is cheap. Oil change is $250 (10 liters of a special synthetic oil), but the life on an oil change is supposed to be about 15k miles.

Nevertheless, I'd read this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...e-our-m5s.html

Supersprint tubular headers w/ sport cats $13,500
Supersprint street exhaust system $2,800
aFe CAI $730
H&R Coil over kit $1,860
4.10 ring/pinion set $600
Performance software upgrade $1,200
Camshaft kit $2,300
Plus alot more.
Nice car.

Pisses me off though the way these companies price their performance upgrades according to the price of the car, and the fact it's a BMW.

Regardless it's fast enough anyway. At least until an F10 M5 pulls up alongside you!

IMO the M5 is the meanest looking sedan..I just love how aggressive they look for a sedan. Although they don't have a back-up camera don't they have back up sensors and front bumper sensors as well? But to go from buying a 135i and coming out with a M5 is a big difference in cars lol

if you ever decide to get the mod bug and want massive power be sure to check out the ess supercharger kit...its still in testing but 700+rwhp for 15$k is not bad at all if you think about it...plus if you do the internals you could see 900+whp..that M5 would beat almost any supercar. Nice upgrade btw!

always been a fan of the M5. my buddy has an E39 M5. you get a lot of car for the money for sure. I'm really digging the new redesign. parts are super expensive though. if you can afford it then congrats. my next car will be a CTS-V.

does the m5 require the special castrol synthetic oil? I used to have an E46 M3. That stuff was expensive.

Yes and no. It is kind of the same question that gets asked here by noobs 'Do I use synthetic or regular oil?' +90% of M5 owners will tell you to use the Castrol TWS 10w-60 which is spec'd for BMW M cars. But I read an interview someone did with an M division engineer and when he was asked if that was the only oil you can use he said yes if you plan to use the car to its full potential. When asked if you just plan to use the car for daily driving he was puzzled why you'd buy an M car for just normal driving but did say that in that case any 10W-XX oil will be fine.
I did my own oil change on the car this summer and it wasn't to hard to do but it was $176 for 11 quarts of oil, the oil filter and delivery.

this is probably a stupid question but have you checked out any of the M5 forums on bimmerpost?

...or you could pm ttribe or go to his old threads about his M5.

Enjoy. Honestly a thrill to drive. I love the automatic seat supports on turns.. But I really hope you got the extended warranty. Buddy of mine bought the M5 when it first came out I think it was '07 or so. Had it in the shop so many times dealer offered him an upgrade to a M6 at no charge. They were out of stock of M5s at that time. Granted he had bought over 10 vehicles at Pacific BMW. Hopefully you got the new one and they were able to take care of those issues since then.

Wholly thread resurrection Batman! Wow this is the first time one of my old threads has been revived this must be how Justin feels being the most active user on here. I just got a two year anniversary email today from my salesman who always asks if I plan on trading it in for something else whenever I am at the dealer. My answer is always no I like it to much.

Advice
Well have deep pockets it isn't cheap to own even though the prices for the car are about 1/3 to half of what they were new. Be prepared for some of the BMW arrogance I am looked down on because I own an 06 which everyone automatically assumes is a piece of junk just waiting to breakdown. You say you're looking at an 09/10 so you won't have that problem but the prices on those are usually 10-15K higher than a good 06-07. The car is surprisingly easy to work on if you are a DIY'er I recently did the spark plugs, fuel filter and oil change on the car. I took my time and didn't break anything. Many people are worried about using a rear wheel drive car like the M5 in winter but I just went thru a Minnesota winter using snow tires I bought for it and had zero problems with traction or stability so don't be afraid of using it year round. But the biggest piece of advice I can give is BE CAREFUL. DON'T let people goad you into racing or driving fast on the highway. Since I bought mine I have read at least 3-7 stories of M5 owners who were killed because of driving to fast or racing. The car is deceptively fast a small tap on the throttle and two downshifts and you can easily get to 100 mph before you realize it and if you are not 100% focused and know how the car will react to steering or throttle inputs at that speed it will absolutely turn around bite you. So I would highly recommend the BMW M driving school.

Updates
Well after two years I have added around 24,000 miles to the car and have managed an average 16.12 MPG on mostly pre-rush hour, 5:30am 3:00pm, commuting to and from work. It has only left me on the side of the road once with a bad alternator which was replaced under my extended warranty. It has had one or two other issues that were covered under warranty but nothing major and if I didn't have the warranty I probably wouldn't have fixed them. I needed to replace the rear tires to the tune of $1,200 expect 20-25,000 mile out of them with gentle use. That's about all I can think of right now if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Those who look down on you are fools. Granted the new F10 M5 has stirred the crowd, the E60 will always be more special (at least to me). It may be the first and last V10 M5 in BMW History.

Funny thing is, I see myself getting older and feel it's time to reap some of life's rewards. V10 is a great reward. I do plan to keep the TL as the reliable and affordable alternative. I just need to fix my transmission. Poor car has been parked for a month.

LOL , I'm surprised Jspace hasn't chimed in yet.

I've pm'd ttribe (former M5 owner) about some advice as well and I'm fully aware of BMW maintenance. So I'm just developing a plan for ownership, both financially and realistically. The F10 M5's just don't quite do it for me. The roar of the V10 is what I have always loved about the e60.

I've past the boy racer days, but glad to know I'll have the power if needed. No crazy driving here. It's not worth it. I've reached to point in life where I should be on cruise control. My buddy owns a diesel 335 BMW and that thing is torquey. I love it. He went to the M school with his wife and he also highly suggests it because it will benefit you, whether you drive an M car or not.

The TL transmission issues come on the heels of major engine work recently. I dumped 3 grand into this thing trying to avoid major issues, and then the granny tranny fails a week later. So, this had me looking into pursuing my dream car. I will still keep the TL because she's been faithful for 7 years and still turns heads.
There isn't anything on the market that attracts me right now outside of the Genesis R-spec.

Thanks for the input.
