Two Unrelated TL Question

I've had my car ('08 Type S) for about 5 weeks now.

Is it normal to hear a little lifter clatter (I assume) from the engine?

What is the little rectangular cover to the left of the shifter when in Park? It has a slot that looks like you could open it with a screwdriver.

Thanks!

Rectangular piece is used incase the shifter needs to be popped out of Park or whichever i believe.

The car is setup so that it cannot be shifted out of park without the brake being applied. underneath the cover is a manual release for the shifter in case it gets stuck and will not release with the brake applied.

You can hear a little lifter/injector noise with the door open or window down at idle but not while driving. If it does it under load, look at the "valve chatter" thread.

That's when I'm hearing it, when the car is idling in the garage and I'm not in the car.

did any of you bother to read the owner manual- it tells you many important things like-
if the nuetral safety interlock/brake lights safety- fails or activates, you remove the cover- insert the car key because it fits, push down to release and you are good for one use- get to the part store~

That's normal. Every TL I've heard has the noise. For what it's worth, mine got much quieter when I went with a 30wt oil. I had the plastic engine covers off during the summer and it made a slight increase in the tick noise.

Thanks, I hate cars, I was wondering about the 30 weight! I had a Miata before this car and they are notorious for lifter noise. I was a little surprised to hear a subdued version of that with the TL!
