Trunk Tray Cut-out

Insead of cutting holes in the trunk tray as the user's guide tells you to, I recommend using an exacto knife to cut a 1/2 inch T in the center each cut-out. If you cut a hole in the tray it defeats the purpose of the tray because sand, dirt, and grass can easilly fall through the holes to the carpeted area. A neatly cut T will allow you to easilly pass the net through to connect while not allowing much else to go through. While not using the net the cut is not noticeable.

Or, just remove the net tie downs and screw them through the trunk tray. This pins the trunk tray down and provides the smallest possible hole which is covered by the tie down. Of course, you will need to unscrew the tie downs to access the spare tire well.

Didn't think of that. Good call. I tied it and it works really well. It seals the hole that it makes. If you do the knob in the middle of the trunk you can still access all of the tools on top of the spare tire. Thanks.

Wow, this is one of those simple things I hadn't even thought of. I went to use the cargo net the other day but was annoyed because I had to bend back the corner of the tray to use it. I thought about cutting the trunk tray but didn't want to damage the integrity of the tray. Didn't even realize it was recommended or instructed to cut out the holes and didn't think of small holes with the pins through it either.

Thanks!

This is how I did it. It required some careful feeling around with my finger to pinpoint the exact spot on the trunk tray where the screws should go, but once that was done, it worked well. Taking it out to clean it is a bit of a nuisance, but not a huge problem.

Upload them to a site such as Photobucket and then copy and paste the code formatted with "IMG" in brackets.

This is with the knob in covering the hole and holding the tray down.

Well I just did this on my car. Rather than actually cut holes in the center of each area, I simply pushed the screws through the material. This made the smallest possible hole which easily is sealed/covered when you screw the post down.

Sorry I'm being dense, but can you explain about still being able to access the spare tire area when pushing the knobs through the mat?

Because the tray will be held down by the knobs.

I have not, nor do I plan to punch holes in the trunk tray. It defeats the purpose, in my opinion. I rarely use the nets, so I guess for me it does not matter. The integrity of the tray matters more. Even with the tray in place some stuff gets onto the carpet. With holes punched in it I'm sure it would be far worse. I remove the tray and vacuum the carpets each time I clean the car, so having the knobs screwed through it would be a pain.

Damn! This is exactly what I was looking for...

I had been thinking of the "just push the screws through the tray" approach, and you have all confirmed it. Since I got my car "with" the tray, and had no idea the nets even existed for over a week, I didn't even realize that there were knobs underneath to attach the nets to!

Great forums...

I was looking at this thread just this weekend when I bought a trunk tray. I just used a drill to make holes and then screw the knobs over the tray.

Worked like a charm.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try this once the golf season is over. I don't use the net right now because my golf bag sits there.
