Trans Fluid Question

It's time to change the Trans Fluid in my 04 Base 5AT again. After reading about ATF's, I think I want to try the Redline D4. My only worry is that if I can just get three quarts of the Z1 out no matter how many times it gets flushed, is it safe and or worth it to add three quarts of D4?
Any thoughts and advice would be great.

Thanks

I do not understand your question. Are you saying is it safe to mix d4 with z1? How many miles on your TL?

You are only planning on doing 1x3? If you have high mileage, i would do 3 quarts flush drive for a few hundred miles then repeat until you get complete 3x3

Yes to your first question and my car has 167k and I have used the Z1 before. I will do a 3x3 but I was going to do it by changing fluid and driving a few miles between changes to get the fluid as cleas as possible. Then I would like to add the D4, but is it worth it to add three quarts of D4 to the Z1 that will still be in the Trans?

Just do the 3x3 with all of D4. And stop doubting yourself.

I guess that makes sense, huh My other concern was mixing the different Fluids. I wasn't sure if it was not wise to use the Redline unless doing a flush and fill.
Thanks

You have to slowly introduce the new fluid to the old fluid at those amount of miles. Meaning do a 1x3 with the D4 like suggested above drive a few hundred miles if the car reacts great to the new fluid do your 2x3 with another 3 quarts of D4, and repeat the same procedure until you completed a 3x3. So to answer your question yes its safe.
I just did a 1x3 on my 04 with 3quarts of D4 and Im at 88k on the ODO, maybe sometime next week I'll do my 2x3 with the other 3quarts of D4 I have in my trunk.

I don't know if having 3 quarts of D4 mixed with the old Z1 for a couple hundred miles is a good idea. I think the Champs suggestion makes the most sense, although he didn't give a time frame. I was going to just drive a few miles between changes just to go through the gears.

at 167k you're better off doing a 1x3 with redline...seeing how your car reacts to it...and then doing another 1x3 1k miles later...lather, rinse, repeat.

you don't want to completely change your fluid at your mileage. take it slow. baby steps.

I can't see how 3 quarts of D4 mixed with the majority of dirty Z1 could be good for the tranny for more than a few miles.I'm starting to think I should just stick with the Z1 due to the high miles on my car.

Just do as I say man. What do you think happens in a 3x3 flush anyway? You drain, fill, it gets mixed with the old. Drain again. The point is with each drain you will have higher percentage of the new mixed with the old. It still mixes.

Think clean water and dirty water. You have 9 quarts of dirty water in a tank, you drain 3 quarts you fill 3 quarts with clean water. Ok now , water not as dirty right? You take out 3 more (now a mixture of clean and dirty) then you fill with clean water. Now the whole tank is a bit clearer. Keep on doint it until it is clear.

Anyway introduce it slowly

And if u continue with that z1, might as well just replace your tranission with a set of plastic gears from Legos and just drive it off a cliff. Ok not that bad but we just wish the best for you

Well if it helps at all.. my 06 has 136k on it and i dont know when the fluid was last changed but i just did the first part (1x3) today with Redline D4 and the car seems fine. Drove about 100 miles on the turnpike and i feel confident that my car is ok with the new fluid. Time frame was the only thing i was unsure about... as in.. whether to do the 2nd part (2x3) tomorrow or wait a week.

I understand the concept of the 3x3 (took a few minutes, but I get it). So like I said, my two concerns were mixing the 2 different fluids, and driving more than a couple miles beteween changes with that mix of Z1 and D4. 2'nd after people cautioned how the trans with such high miles would react to the D4, I got a little worried.

Seems kinda weird to do when the Z1 has been used for 167k. I'm also not sure how I'd drive just the tranny off a cliff, but ok .
Seriously though, I do appreciate the advice and the tough love, LOL! I didn't get around to doing the fluid change today cause it was too nice and instead I cleaned the cabin of my boat while my wife sun tanned on the bow. What the Fak!

Thanks again!

Thanks bro, that's good to hear! I wish I could give you better advice, but If it were me I wouldn't go too much more than 100 miles before stage 2.

Nothing will go wrong with a full 3x3 in one day especially with D4.

Most of the threads regarding introducing the fluid slowly is for the Type F fluids. 3x3 is OK to do with D4.
