TOP10 crash test rank, can u find our 04TL?

SORRY IF IT IS A REPOST...OR U'VE SEEN IT...

The US Government has been performing barrier-crash test for years; the problem is that few real-world crashes involve driving straight on into a solid barrier. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crashes cars into a deformable barrier that crumples just like another car would, and is offset so as to concentrate crash energy on one side of the car. IIHS has not crashed every car, but of those they have tested, these ten are at the top of their size and price classes.

1) Volvo S80 (2004-2005)
"Volvo" and "safety" are synonymous, so it’s no surprise to see their flagship sedan at the top of this list. Many vehicles in IIHS’ Large Luxury Car class rated as Best Picks, but only the S80 scored top marks for both front- and rear-impact protection.

2) Volvo S60 (2004-2005)
Another Volvo—who would have guessed? Like its big brother, the S60 is the only car in its class (Midsize Luxury Car) to score top marks for both front- and rear-impacts. IIHS plans a side-impact test for the S60 this coming year. I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that the S60 will be the first in its class to sweep top marks for all three tests.

3) Acura TL (2004-2005)
With no side-impact results for the S60, Acura’s new TL grabs the top rating in the Midsize Luxury Car class with top scores for frontal and side-impact (the latter comes courtesy of the TL’s side-impact airbags). The TL was rated Marginal (3rd highest out of 4) for rear protection.

4) Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable (2004-2005)
I must admit, I was a bit surprised (put please) to see the Taurus/Sable twins at the top of the Large Family Car list. The good news is that both cars scored top marks for frontal-impact protection; the bad news is that the Taurus scored marginal for rear protection, while the Sable scored Poor (the lowest rating). That said, no car in this class that the IIHS has tested has managed better than Marginal for rear-impact protection.

5) Saab 9-3 (2004-2005)
In the Midsize Moderately Priced class, the Saab 9-3 is up on top with top scores for frontal, side and rear impacts. A perfect sweep! Good to see that General Motors ownership hasn’t affected the Swede’s pursuit of perfection when it comes to safety and occupant protection.

6) Toyota Camry (2004-2005)
Considering the sheer number of Camrys on the road, it’s reassuring to know that they score good marks on safety. Side airbags gave the Camry a top rating in side as well as frontal impacts. Rear impact was a different story: Marginal or Poor, depending on the seat. (Rear impact ratings apply to 2002-2004 models.)

7) Honda Accord (2004-2005)
Like the Camry, Honda’s popular Accord with side airbags matched the Camry’s top rating for frontal and side impact protection. Rear crash protection, unfortunately, rated only Poor.

8) Volkswagen New Beetle (2004-2005)
Who says small cars aren’t safe? No fewer than nine cars were awarded Best Pick (frontal) awards in the Small Car class; the New Beetle heads the list thanks to Good or Acceptable (depending on seat) rear-impact protection. No small cars have been tested for side-impact protection, but with the growing popularity of side airbags in cars of this size, I predict some strong showings in the near future.

9) Toyota Sienna (2004-2005)
Statistically speaking, minivans are among the safest cars on the road. IIHS only has frontal-impact data for minivans, but they record extensive injury data; the Toyota Sienna scores the highest rating in every single category.

10) Ford Freestar/Mercury Monterey (2004-2005)
The new Ford and Mercury minivan twins are nipping at the Sienna’s heels. Only one category (head/neck injury, second-highest mark) separates it from the Sienna’s best-across-the-board showing. Hopefully IIHS will soon add side- and rear-impact collisions to the minivan tests. I’m sure the results for these vans will be stellar.
