Took Care of recall notice on 04tl Tranny

Brought my car to the dealer and it only took a few hours.
They checked it out and installed the "Kit"? 5,500 miles 04TL.
Does any 1 know what exactly this kit does?

P.s i was very upset about this recall notice, especially when i read "transmission"

Thanks.

its an oil jet kit I believe, it lubricates the gear (specifically the 2nd gear I believe) to make sure it stays properly lubricated at all times

Acura put the same problematic transmission in the 04 tl - idiots. I have an 01TL and my tranny went after 109k (very uncharacteristic of honda products). Long story short the made me pay for a new one ($2,111) after much argument back and forth . This is a fairly large problem on the second gen TL's 99-03 see here http://www.acura-tl.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21.

I am not posting this to rain on anyones parade (I love my car) but after Acura screwed me I feel I should let everyone know that the tranny that they are using is a piece of crap and they know it.

No more honda products for me - period.

So would guys like myself who are getting the 04 TL 5AT next week, since it is after the recall, have anything to worry about? Will Acura be taking care of this issue before I pick up the car?

Yes and no. Technically the recall is only for the lower VIN vehicles, so you should not have any problems. The higher VIN's have the oil-jet kit installed and no over-heating problems should persist.

However, Acura dealers also assured people that there would be NO tranny problems with the 3rd gen TL. Yet there were recalls. So you never know, but for now based on the info we have, you are out of the woods.

The recall was on certain lots of low-VIN cars, up to 14XXX. Just to note: I have never received a letter regarding the recall, but I had the 2nd gear oil jet installed in July after I asked my service folken about it. If you call Acura Customer Service, and give them your VIN, they will tell you right away whether your car is involved in the recall. Or you can go to Ownerlink, and the recall info is right there after you sign in. http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com

You won't get a letter in the mail until Acura is ready for you. I have the same
serious VIN and didn't get a letter, but if you use Owner's Link, you'll see
the recall notice.

The service manager told me they actually take a digital picture of the gear
when they put in the oil kit. and really should not be an issue for 04 models
until the mileage gets way up there. Mostly a problem with the earlier years.
Which is probably true since that are staggering the repairs to the transmissions.

register at ownerlink (from acura.com site) and enter your VIN, then it will tell you if it's affected.

however, it's not clear to me that if a affected car gets the oil jet kit before you pick up the car if OwnerLink will get updated or not.

either way, ask dealer if your VIN is affected, and if it is find out if the kit was installed. if no kit wait until they install it before getting the car

yeah I am worried about my wife's '02 TL. 25,000 miles on it.

When I called they said both were affected.

I just took my car in for a 15K service - ONLY HAVE 13,400 MILES ON IT. I was not aware of the recall at all, until my service guy called me later that afternoon. My vin is 19UUA66274A0003XX. They installed the kit. It was seamless for me.

Has Honda always had transmission problems?

I've had several Hondas w/ATs and have never had a problem with any of my cars. When I was thinking of buying my previous car, a 2000 Accord V-6, I read some posts on Edmund's about tranny problems on the car. I went ahead and bought anyway and I never had one problem with that car in 4 years. Maybe I've just been lucky.

So far, only 2nd gen TL/CL have issues. But the early builds of 3rd gen TL have the similar setup.

3rd gen TL's tranny is quite similar to 2nd gen TL's.

Yours has the internal oil jet kit installed already, and maybe something new inside your tranny. You should have no problem. IMO.

I agree with rets - Honda generally has no problems, but remember, they outsourced the tranny design. It took them way too long to isolate the problem and get a fix - I knew about this weakness when I had my 2002 Type-S, for God's sakes.

But there is precedent, even in Honda engines. The early S2000's were known for eating their engines in Europe - the problem was traced to inadequate oil flow at critical points during sustained high speed travel, such as in Europe. The fix? Yup, oil jets retrofitted to the engine. Seeing a pattern?

The Transmission problem can cause any accidents?

Is it still safe to drive TL?

and dose it really help to install the "oil jet kit"?

I am not aware of any fatalities - and I doubt Honda would give a band-aid fix - this issue has high visibility and lots of NHTSA and press coverage - in fact, it was when the story broke in Los Angeles (as i recall) that Honda started taking these "rare occurences" seriously.

The oil jets work on the S2000 - why would you question it with no reason?
