TL Type S Acceleration

Tonight it was cool out (probably low 50s I'm guessing), so despite my car's severe pinging/spark knock issue, I thought I would test the waters and see what she could do 0-60 with my G-Tech.

I went to the same spot where I tested my TSX, and for my first attempt I kept VSA on and I didn't bother trying to "launch" the car, I took off "aggressively" instead. I registered a 0-60 of 5.57 seconds. I have no idea what is considered normal for the TL Type-S 6 speed, but I thought that time was pretty damn good considering VSA was undoubtedly holding the engine back a bit in 1st and 2nd AND I didn't go crazy out of the gate. I was really impressed with that.

I tried a second time with VSA off and it was a disaster. I also made the mistake of doing a mild "launch". Immediately the front wheels gave up and the most incredible wheel hop in the universe took over. Out of desperation I shifted to 2nd (at only about 15-20 mph or so), but I was too aggressive and the front tires were rendered useless. Finally they hooked up and I got to 60. Even with all that chaos, my time was 6.04 according to the G-Tech. However to be fair, I could've sworn the speedometer wasn't quite to 60 when the G-Tech tripped. I bet the erratic acceleration fooled it.

After that I made a dry run to see if I could get any better with VSA, but by that time I must've really heated up the valves and pistons because I started hearing some wicked spark knock. So I threw in the towel for the night. I can't wait until I get that fixed! I bet I can get her down in the low 5s 0-60 with enough practice!

This TL is a bit trickier than the TSX. I found it quite easy to pull off high 6s in the TSX (6.71 and 6.88 were my best times). It's the massive low RPM grunt of the engine in the TL coupled with the unusual clutch that makes it difficult.

Wow, I always thought the TL-S did 0-60 in about 6.3. This comes as a great surprise.

Gtech units aren't exactly known for their accuracy however.

So true. When I get a TSX as a loaner car I feel so happy I chose the TL. No comparison in power, even with the vtec.

That is a fast time considering Car and Driver's best time is 5.5 seconds when they did "The Quickest Sedans of 2008: $30,000-$40,000".

I've heard the standard '04-'06 6-speed was around 6.0-6.1 seconds in the 0-60. The TL-S with 6-speed has to be significantly faster.
