TL-S Rear Bumper or TL-S A-spec on Base

TL-S Rear Bumper or TL-S A-spec on Base
I remember a few years back there were base TL people who would cut their rear base bumper and put the type s rear spoiler on or something like that to put type s exhausts on.
And some people would even buy the whole type s bumper.
I've always liked the Gundam look of the base w/A-spec rear. But I backed into my wife's SUV once and it flexed my rear. A-spec rear is still intact and attached but the bending cracked the paint near my trunk. I just used touch up to fix it but you can tell. Also one side might have a broken clip because it doesn't sit totally flush.
I'm wondering if I should:
A.) just get the base bumper w/A-spec lip repainted if it can be salvaged
or
B.) TL-S A-spec rear lip w/cutting
*I'm asking cuz I want to grab one of the ATLP exhausts before they stop making them.
And some people would even buy the whole type s bumper.

this is a personal preference.
if you really really really really really really want the ATLP exhaust; then your decision is easy.
get the bumper that will accommodate the ATLP exhaust, which ever one that is.

Its up to you really, the Type-S rear A-Spec lip will accommodate quads, it will look funny with Base exhaust tips. I wanted quads so I have the Type-S rear A-Spec on my base. Pretty easy really, the cutting is very straight forward.

07-08 base A-Spec will not fit quads. 07-08 base A-Spec kit is the exact same as the 04-06 base A-spec rear lips.
I have a base 08 and had a base a-spec lip on it for nearly 2 years now. Last Sunday I retrofitted my 08 base bumper to fit the Type-S ASPEC rear lip because I plan on getting ATLP quads in a few weeks.

Does the TL-S bumper have different designs, I've seen a few that look different Im just not sure (besides a custom grill). And the only way to fit the TL-S bumper on an 04 TL is either full replacement or cutting?

This is a good thread to bookmark which describes the different a-spec:

You must be mistaking the Type-S A-Spec rear lip for a "different design" bumper. That is not the case. The TL-S A-Spec lip goes over the TL-S bumper as a add-on to give it a different more aggressive look.
The TL-S A-Spec rear lip will also fit on any 2004-2008 base model rear bump but you have to modify and cut the factory bumper.
It WILL NOT be a direct fit without cutting. Please do not get confused and assume it will fit perfectly without cutting it up. You will have to do modifications to your base bumper which means measuring and cutting to make it fit. Not a job for the faint of heart. Once it's done correctly it will look perfect like it belonged there. No one will be able to tell you cut up your rear bumper at all. Look at my pictures above in Post #6
Yes all 2004-2008 base rear bumpers are the same.

This thread shows the difference that I was not sure about:

I want the 2008 stock TL-S bumper. Looks like cutting will not work, it needs to be a full replacement? Anyone know where to get this bumper with paint!

I have a base model TL with a factory base rear bumper. I CUT UP MY BUMPER to fit the type-s rear A-Spec.
You DO NOT need a Type-s bumper. For the love of God please just read and search. The answer to your question is right here

Are you serious? "looks like cutting will not work". Seriously? Just two posts above I quoted you and gave you the exact answer you need. I was even as specific as possible.

You are just confuse.
All bumbers are 1 piece. If you want only that then go with the Type-S bumper like you stated.
They were not referring to cut the Type-S bumper to fit onto your base bumper. You cut the base bumper to fit the ASPEC TYPE S LIP onto your base bumper.
04-08 TL bumpers (Base/Type-S)= 1 piece
04-08 TL Aspec are lip kits that are added onto the bumpers

I appreciate the response/knowledge, I saw your post above. No need to get angry. I have an 04 TL. I do not want the A-Spec bumper, the thread I attached before shows side-by-side: the 04 A-Spec bumper, the 08 A-Spec, then the 08 TL-S stock bumper - which is what I want. From that picture it looks like the 08 stock tl-s bumper is 1 piece and you can't just cut the stock 04 and put this on over it. That's what the question mark was for. I'm asking if the 08 TL-S bumper is 1 piece or if it is just like the A-Spec where it attached to bottom of existing bumper. I hope I have explained this better. And thanks for the help, I'm a n00b. Maybe Im just completely off, that why Im asking!
heres a price point perspective for a Type S bumper
type s bumper(unpainted) roughly $250 (im not sure if the exhaust inserts come with the bumpers or not)
paint that bumper roughly $200-$250 varies as different people different prices.
new quad tips from online vendor here - $100
to get tips welded $50?? im not sure you will have to shop around
total price roughly about $600 to make it all work
type s aspec lip - $230
quad tips $100
weld $50??
total $380-$400
This is how your car will look just the bumper(although this car has the type s aspec lip but you get the general look)
notice how small the base tips look now
And with quad tips welded in.
I hope TegoTL dont mind me borrowing pictures

I appreciate the feedback dontTL'em'nothing!! Now you get what Im looking to do. My main reason was because Im thinking about doing an exhaust. And IMO the TL-S bumper is perfect for me because it is flush and not too bulky.

I'm a little confused as to why you'd want a TL-S rear bumper instead of the TL-S rear a-spec...
I assume you don't like the a-spec look?
Keep in mind that a new TL-S bumper requires painting which will set you back another 250-400 depending on painter. A new bumper is usually 200-300 alone.

i put the XLR8 performance QUADS on my base 07, I put the entire TypeS Lips kit. The bumper did require cutting, i wouldnt recommend doing it yourself if your not experienced in the area of modifying. It isnt that hard but its alot of cutting/test fit/cut/test fit etc. Its cheaper and nobody knows unless youn pull your bumper off. Find someone local around you to help!

Yeah, the exhaust opening has to be opened about an inch on one side and basically from both exhaust openings have to be cut at the top all the way across. Its torture until you put the aspec kit on then you calm down a bit. You have to drill holes in it too. Make sure you do the right ones, there is alot of marks on the back. I almost did the wrong ones. SCARY! It took me about 4 hours to put the entire kit on i think. Thats with a lift and knowledge of cars(im a mechanic and also used to do bodywork) so my skills of taking the bumpers off took about 15 min. Then the cutting began!

4 hours is nothing compared to the lengthy mods I have done. And as long as you have a cutting bit on your dremel, and mark a line, it will go fine. Nothing to be scared about. If you mess it up, then buy a nother bumper. Everything is fixable.
I may do this soon. But I have too many projects still. I may have to pay someone to help. Like coilovers and camber kit.. Then I can focus on my steering wheel and cluster and puddle lights.
