I had a run in recently with an SI coupe 6mt. It was a Honda mechanic test driving it on a side road behind the dealership He said he just put in a new clutch and was test driving it. From a dig, he was able to get like a 3 foot jump on me for a second, he did a better launch and the SI is lighter and I'm guessing easier to launch, BUT once my wheels caught I jumped ahead, by 65 I was in front in 2nd then had to slow down. The reverse trip, same story.
So go from a dig, as soon as your wheels catch grip you should pull ahead.

nice...btw he has a short shifter adapter, i dunno if that really helps in races but its worth mentioning.
so from a dig it is! whats the best method for me to launch? turn off VSA and leave it in Drive and just floor it?

Like I said, I owned a 2008 Si & have the 5AT Type-S. From a roll, the only chance my Si usually had is if I left it in auto. Otherwise, the Si just didn't quite have the power to stay near the Acura until the TL started running out of steam. By that time, I would have backed off in the Si anyway.
From a dig, you should take him unless he's a surprisingly good driver, or you manage to spin the tires. Again, not quite enough power off the line in the Si to match the Type-S from what I experienced. Don't just floor it. Even w/ factory power, you can give him the jump by causing the tires to spin & cause the VSA to kick-in. Turn VSA off, leave it in drive, and as you should expect, just "ease" into the throttle until probably right around when the car shifts into 2nd, maybe just before. When the car shifts into 3rd (if you're going that fast) is when I've heard to switch over to SS-mode since the auto apparently doesn't completely utilize 3rd gear like you can in manual-mode.
Again, I do have respect for what the Si is capable of, esp. with some minor mods. Had a lot of fun in mine & I miss the 6-speed in it.

my friend and i were both merging on the freeway and we were both on the onramp, i was right behind him and then we both decided to floor it onto the open freeway. i was in manual mode and started walking up to him, and by the end of 3rd gear i was able to pass him. finally showed the SI that 4 cylinders cant hang with a V6! it was a friendly race and he admitted to the loss.

Check your original post...because if you were on an on ramp and doing 80 - dropped it down into 3rd (and remember...your friend knows what this means) how did we suddenly hit an on ramp at ~20 before taking off....this thing didnt start until you dropped it in 3rd, right? Appears your story has changed or there is another post somewhere else in this thread where we are talking about another incident.

^ Uh oh... Does this mean he'll pull on you now? I raced my co-workers 07/08 Si sedan. It wasn't even a race; there was lots of noise coming from his car and that's about it. He did stay within viewing distance though

Si has the advantage from the gearing. TL has the advantage from torque. If both were stock and the TL was Manual, the Civic would not win from a dig, but from a roll, the SI would hang.

It would be nice to find an inexpensive way to defeat the speed limiter in the ecu. I read in a thread that if you downshift to 3rd in the 100 mph range upshift to d4 past limiter- not sure if that is accurate- or if there is a better way-

When you say race header plus Hondata, do you mean Flashpro or just a reflash? There's a pretty big difference between the two. If he has FP and full bolt ons he should pull you without a doubt. If he has the reflash he may still pull, but only slighttttly.

im not sure. he has one of those things that he connected under the dash, and then connected to his computer which loads pre-set maps. does that help? also he just changed from his injen short ram to a cold air intake. his race header is the SSR replica, and also an LSD exhaust and short shifter adapter. his car definitely pulls in the high end but lacks torque.

Sounds like FlashPro. If he can tune it himself or get a tune, it's FlashPro. The reflash is just that, a flash.
SSR replica is the Buddyclub header (aka CRSX header) and is actually a very good replica. If he can drive he should pull you from both a dig and a roll. Get that Jpipe

I'm not saying he's gonna smoke you, but he should beat you. That doesn't always mean he will.
