TL Noob some questions. Long crank time + Exhaust.

I have an 04 base TL 6spd. Now then i go to start the car i noticed that it takes a little longer of cranking time to have the car turn over. Is this normal on the TL or is it time for some plugs, wires (or is it coilpacks in this car). I just got this car so I am completly fresh to this motor. What else would make the car turn over late? Timing, plugs. The car is too new to think about compression loss and stuff like that I would assume. I am also looking at the type S quad exhaust and liking the way it sounds and looks. Has anyone tried to bolt it on a base model or am i going to have to weld? Thanx for all your help. Tom

I think I've heard of this being quite normal somewhere. I, too, have the same thing happening sometimes and I think someone mentioned that it is a normal behaviour for our TLs.

HQTL6SPD 03-18-2008 06:02 AM

I heard its normal too. I hate it, I wish It could crank up faster...

stillhere153 03-18-2008 06:49 AM

first question... slow crank could be the battery

second question... type s exhaust... bolts right up no welding (atlp catback or oem exhaust)... you can either get a type s rear bumper or the type s aspec

Doesn't the U-LEV2 also cause this? The TLs are built to take less gas while starting up... thus making it longer to start?

I've noticed some cars starting up the second the key is turned...

Just my thoughts on this.

Since you got an 04 most likely its battery related. Acuras are prone for poor batteries.

Type-S Quad Exhaust will require Type S Bumper, or you can get the Type S Rear aspec lip and cut the existing bumper (What I did for the ATLP Quad Exhaust)

Be-in my TL - the 07+ have new technology where you just turn the key and release then the starter automatically turns till the engine is started.

It can't be cuz of the battery. The current one I use has 1380 cranking amps, and it's still the same. Could be the ULEV.

What I always forget to try is to leave the key in Pos I for like 5 secs, then crank. Most diesel cars start up this way. Who knows, it might work well with our cars too :dunno:

Didn't even know that!! I am gonna have to try it next time I drive :wish:

the battery has nothnig to do with this at all, but ill take all of your words for it and just blame the ULEV. I got the a spec lip for my 04. Would I have to cut the lip in order to make that exhaust work?

I've heard the engine is supposed to make two revolutions on the starter before firing. Not sure if it's true or not. Mine takes longer to start than some other cars I've driven too. It cranks over plenty fast, just takes a second to fire. I would consider it normal if it's less than a couple seconds.

Yes, i noticed the 07. I started my girls car today but accidentally let go of the key but i went far enough to start it. really cool. it started with a milisecond of a crank.

Compared to other cars (Accord, Maxima, G35, etc.) that I have driven, my TL does seem to take a little longer to start.

csmeance 03-18-2008 10:52 PM

it is normal for the TL's. It is part of the ULEV II system to reduce emmissions on start-up

I have a battery that is 2.5 yrs old. It starts up everytime but lately because it's cold, it starts up a good 4 to 5 seconds crank. The engine seems to crank for awhile and tries hard..... if the car sits over night, it takes longers (not always) what causes this?

ULEV??? last few winters, it never did that, even at 10 degrees.....

thanks

Ive got the same issue. 04 TL 49K miles. Seems to crank slow, yet has never left me stranded. Will ask my dealership, am scheduling a A1 service this week.

dtapia 11-24-2008 01:50 AM

the cranking time varies on each car some of the cars start real fast and some will crank over a few times and start. i don't think their is a set amount of cranking time over a few seconds for the car to start.

TL1999 11-24-2008 06:23 AM

check your battery for the slow crank....

Tripnbeats 11-24-2008 09:12 AM

my tech at acura changed my battery and my starter because he hated how long it took to get it started...he said 3 small starter cranks and it should turn right over.....guys a lil anal about that

xtcxjigga 11-24-2008 02:19 PM

funny thing is.. my car did this earlier and the car was warmed up already. time to go back to the stealership

tonytoka 07-14-2014 05:44 PM

This might be a dead post, but I'm having the same issue... 2005 RL 53k. Not sure why it's happening all of a sudden. Could this also be caused by a fuel issue ?

tonytoka 07-14-2014 05:46 PM

Couldn't find this problem in the RL threads.. Sorry fellas.

justnspace 07-14-2014 05:52 PM

^its okay, its basically the same car.
and we love to think about problems.

please post some of the symptoms you are having.
try to think of some details, like; when did this start happening?

is it not starting?
when was the last time you changed the battery?

Conan O'Brien 07-14-2014 10:00 PM

just to throw out an example...my TL started doing this a few months ago and about a week later the battery was dead.

Accord325 07-15-2014 02:56 PM

Do you allow a little time for the Fuel pump to engage after turning the key to the "On" position (not start). The pump has to get fuel up to the engine. You can hear the Fuel Pump engage when you turn the key
