The TL Key

My sister just got a new honda coupe, it has key with integrated buttons...my brand new TL still has the seperate remote...and honestly was suprised when i picked it up to see a key without the buttons integrated like the honda, bmw's, etc. What gives?

Also, why does the TL/AT auto shift from 1 to 2 automatically, the TSX lets you shift from 1 to 2. Guess it's just geared to low to be practical.

Life is full of unsolved mysteries, and you have put the two most important ones in one thread.

There has been a lot of discussion on both your questions in this forum.

We all would like to know why we didn't get the integrated remote, which would have made things much simpler.

Same with the 1-2 shift question. Maybe they don't trust us TL'ers to be as knowledgeable about shifting as the TSX'ers.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and best of luck and good driving with your TL.

I've wondered what would happen if we bought a blank Honda key, had it cut, programmed so the immobilizer chip is recognized by our cars, and programmed the remote to match our car's remote receivers...

I think so... we have a few threads here in the past discussing the similar issue. Everyone is wondering the same thing... it's hard to beleive Acura/Honda is so stupid and forget sto copy this simple tech from Accord if that type of key fob/remote is capable of applying into TL.

Expect to pay a buttload for the key. The JDM Skyline integrated key (which the USDM G35 doesn't have), costs $330 for one.

Does the Accord have an immobilizer? (Forgive my ignorance). I only ask, because the JDM Skyline doesn't (or uses an incompatible one), so when Infiniti dealer tried to order keys for a bunch of guys in the G35 club, we found they didn't work.

The Accord keys does have immobilizer. The keys are cut differently.
When I first picked up my 03 Accord Coupe, I was impressed by the keys. I was expecting similar keys when I got my TL. The Acura dealer was also surprised by the keys the Accord had. The Accord keys are also more durable. It doesn't scratch as easily as the TL's remote.
I'm sure Honda could've made the same keys for the TL with the memory seat feature if they wanted to.

I would not be suprised if the 2006 TL comes with the key integration.

Another thnig i notcied is that the key Fob is easily ruined. My keys are 9 months old, but look so worn out. They need ot make some better scratch resistent fobs. The second oen they gave me is still brand new, i mgiht have ot switch to that one soon.

Keyless access is they way to go IMO. I wasn't happy about the plain TL key after seeing the Accords, but I would much prefer to have the remote in my pocket, walk up to my car, pull the handle, get in, and start the car.

Now is there a way we can make this happen on our TLs now? Aftermarket? Cool custom gimickrackery?

I'm not sure this is all of it, but they have a Smart Unit which lists for $646.30, plus a front and rear RF unit, $235.80 each, and the key fobs, which are $321.30 each. Plus additional parts, installation, etc.

Here's a picture of the system, and you can go here for the parts list.

so does this mean if we wanted the RL smart unit in our TLs it'd cost well over $1000 just for the parts? + installlation + tomfoolery to get it to work in our cars?

suddenly my keyfob doesn't look so bad.....

just FYI, even though those remote FOB's get banged up over time, you can use this plastic polish to keep the scratches off the shiny surfaces (Acura Symbol). This stuff will work on the interior trim (carbon fiber / woodgrain), plastic on the insturment panels, Tail light covers, headlight covers.. virtually any shiny plastic surface. Do not use this on your LCD screens though, use Kensington LCD cleaner www.kensington.com

Thanks,
