Ok that tells me the trip monitor is broken. I literally hop on a hwy everyday for a half hour each way. That was one of my next questions is why its always on 25. I get 250 miles to a full tank. Does that sound about right?

^reset your trip monitor.

make all those values 0.
then jump on the highway.

then you can always calculate your mileage by hand.

and yes, I get about 250miles to a tank...although my car is a weekend car and I WOT everywhere.

lol I wish i could WOT everywhere, ever since this gas mileage thing ive been driving like an old lady. i mean I had a 2002 ford explorer that gave me 240 to the tank full. I figured this car would be 300 easy. I have done the reset which always returns to 19 and average of 25. My engine does have a little stumble to it but the dealer says theres nothing wrong. I'll play around with it and if I see a problem back to the dealer it goes

^i would run it by a local auto parts store and ask them to read, if any codes come up.

I remember some people changing out their O2 sensors and reclaiming those lost mpgs.

as for tips on how to get 34mpg+, cruise control is your friend I'm still trying to beat the 37mpg I got last weekend but I don't get to do a whole lot of highway driving usually. I get about 23-24 in the city

DIST means DISTANCE as in how many miles you have driven since you last reset your TRIP MONITOR.

To reset your trip monitor, click the OK button to where the display shows "Avg MPG, Avg MPH, DIST:, Time". Hold the "RES/OK" button for about 5-10 seconds and all the values will change to "--" or "0".

What I usually do is everytime I pump gas I reset my trip monitor so I know exactly how many MPGs i'm getting PER FILL UP.

What your saying and what your MID is showing isn't adding up. When I drive city, my average MPG is 18-19 and my average MPH is 18-25.

You say you always jump on the highway for atleast 30 minutes a day everyday. If you're driving on the highway going 60-70MPH (maybe more) why on earth would your trip monitor display 25MPH as your average speed??

On the window sticker for the base model TL it lists 18city 26highway. I've gotten as high as 36MPG driving for a little over an hour straight.

exactly, i think something is definently wrong with the trip monitor. I reset it today on the highway and it went down to 19 and 25. For whatever reason it likes that position. I have to bring it to the dealer for a front end noise and since its under warranty i will have them check it out aswell. Thanks everyone for all the help

What kind of decrease in mpg do you see with winter gas?

My '04 TL consistently gets 23mpg with a mix of city/highway driving. For the past few fill ups I've gotten 20mpg. I'm thinking it is due to gas stations changing from summer gas to winter gas.

What kind of performance changes are you seeing? Do you think winter gas affects higher octane fuel more than regular grade?

That's not the only factor involve in lower mileage during the colder months. What happens is that cooler/colder air is more dense than is warmer air and therefore contains more oxygen per cubic foot than does warmer air. The ECU interprets this condition via the OX sensors as an oxygen rich environment, which it is, and compensates by increasing the amount of fuel delivered to the cylinders in an attempt to maintain that sought after ideal air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. This results in more power and reduced fuel economy.

I'll take the increased power over mileage any day.

I've never heard of this before! Is this true about gas stations switching from 'summer' to 'winter' gas?

Sounds completely stupid, but what do I know.

If its true, can anyone explain why?

They switch gas in winter due to emmisions, since most people let their car warm up.

I don't know much more than that... But that's the sum of it.

I use Vegatable Oil in my gas tank when it gets cold. It heats up pretty quick!

wow never thought there was a difference, my car generally gets worse gas mileage with cooler air because I punch it more cuz it feels throatier, haha. That seems to be the only reason my gas guzzles faster in the winter.

Question Gas: Regular v Premium

When I first picked up my TL I was putting in regular unleaded since I didn't know any better and the dealer didn't tell me anything. Just from reading around the forums I found that I should be using premium only so I switched. So far I have been through about a half dozen tanks of premium gas, but I have noticed that on my trip computer it shows that my average MPG has gone down since I switched. When I was using the regular I was getting about 29-32 where as now with the premium I have been getting about 25-27.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

Is there anything that I can do to increase the mileage again?

But i got the TL the second week of Sept. Wouldnt that still be after the winter fuel switch? So I shouldnt notice that much of a change theoretically.

Its really hard to rely on the AVG mpg from the MID .

Even doing it by hand is hard because there is too many variables. You never travel the same speed in the same temperatures at the same barometric pressure nor idle at the light the same amount of time ... etc etc etc .. near impossible to determine.

i know there are more then a few variables that would change the mileage of every tank, but to drop about 5 mpg in one tank? i found that a bit weird

Geez, that is horrible!!! If I don't get over 400 miles to a tank something is really wrong. Daily drive is 26 miles city streets (not all stop & go) and 47 miles slow freeway(north Los Angeles area). Usually averaging 24-32 mph.
On long trips, I have gotten over 500 miles to a tank several times.

May be your odometer is not correct and you are driving a lot further than is indicated?

I have always heard you're supposed to warm up your car during cold weather like let it raise a couple notches above C. I swear I heard on the news not too long ago that during cold weather, it is best to just start the car and drive. Is that right? What is the proper technique? Like if it's like 30-40 F how long should I leave it idling?

What I understand is that if its a long commute you should drive slowly, keep shifts under 2000rpm so the transmission and engine can both warm up. If its a short commute you should leave the car to warm up before you head out.
