Dave, the manual calls for the timing belt change a 105,000 miles. That's when your big service is due.

Thanks Steven I was asking because the delearship insisted that it should be done at 60K miles. But since they are all about money I was wondering if it could be dangerous to wait that long.

Do the TB service when the "4" shows up in your MID. There is no time interval. Inspections, are always a good idea to make sure tensioner is not leaking.

^^ I would always like to take the page from the owners manual and when the service advisor says you need service early, show them the page from the manual.

I just got my 04 TL and it has 130,000 miles on it. Is there a reliable way I can check to see if the timing belt/ water pp has been replaced already? Maybe an id number or something? ...sorry if this is thread hijacking, thought it was pretty relevant.
Also is there a way to check info from the computer with an OBD2 reader, like top speed hit, when the MID was cleared, etc?

Don't know about the top speed thing but on the TB, the only way you might be able to tell is by the condition of the belt and/or accessory belts. You should be able to tell if they have 130k miles on them as opposed to say 25k. Or if you run a Carfax it may show service records or if you can determine if the car may have been serviced by a particular Acura dealer you can call them and give them the VIN to see if it is in their records

The people who owned this car took it to a private garage, so no carfax. Which made me weary, but they had kids and used this car as a commuting car and it was obvious so I think they took good care of it. I can probably look at it and tell, just thought there might be a way to know for sure. Ive had enough old cars to know what and old belt looks like.

Yea...there is definitely a time element...
My 2nd gen TL has 75K on it, but it's also 12 years old... My service guy (who is generally one to put off maintenance that is not required) felt like I was on borrowed time with a 12 year old timing belt... So I did end up changing it out (at the time, it was at 68K)...

I should hope so... The belt should look fine... If it's cracked and worn, it would probably have already snapped...
To be honest, I was inclined to wait till the mileage (105,000mi), but my service guy was nervous enough that I decided not to risk it... He has seen belts snap after 10 years with low mileage and highly recommended that I not take the risk... I trust his judgement...
