Hi guys i'm thinking about selling my TL to buy a 2001 BMW M5 i know its expensive to maintain but i want to know your opinion since i still like my TL but also like the M5.Also i think my cars interior looks 100 times better than the m5's. Please let me know what you guys think thanks.

honestly from a financial point of view it doesnt make any sense ... if ur happy with ur tl y would u trade to an older car that will cost more on average to keep running ... IMO stick with the tl

if you want to pay for the extra maintenance...sweet. i always loved those M5s, but they are out of date now. if you really wanted one, get an '03 with all the revisions and THEN kick your own butt when you realize that BMWs past their factory warranties will destroy you.

It pissed me off when I found an m5 right after I bought my TL...Could have bought an e39 for the same price. I would say if you have cash set aside and able to afford parts/maintenance go for it. They are beautiful cars...The center console is a bit cheap but I love the rest of the car otherwise.

you can get it, but i wouldnt sell the TL...you will need a 2nd vehicle when that bmer spends time in the shop

Tough call. Always wanted an '03 E39 M3 in white but that interior just looks so outdated. The maintenance costs of an Acura/Honda can't be beat. Mods and parts are so cheap in comparison to BMW parts. Not a good financial decision to own any Euro car after warranty expiration IMO.

IMO, you're 23 and need reliability over popularity (if that made sense).

I could've got a 335i new or even a M3 when I bought my TL but I decided not too because it was a bad financial decision if I did. Now of course, if you have the extra money, go ahead.

IMO, for what it's worth, I agree with ^ my neighbor. Keep driving the TL, save $$ and get another good used car later.

What would you do if you got the M5 and the tranny went out or rear end.. or any major part?

If you like the interior of the TL 100 x's better.. then no contest!

I'll poke my nose in and say that I'll agree that you must be a purist to like, or even consider the '01 M5; especially in stock form as to me it's just another 4 dr sedan, nothing outstanding, although with a $70,000 new price tag it has many specific parts/options solely used in the M5. It seems that most that own a specific vehicle, not the common garden variety, think that nothing can be compared to their vehicle, so if you would rather have the M5 in place of the TL, go for it as it's your decision, as I'm certain the new owner of your TL will feel the same about that car.

IMHO, if you can keep up with maintenance/repairs, then do it. I think many people are forgetting the 400hp V8 and RWD bit of having an M5

The M5 is pretty up there... I'd like to know what other cars are better for the money.

A little off target, but the car has got to be an outstanding all around package as just the engine and RWD doesn't cut it in my book. You can buy a Lotus Elise with a little 4 cyl that will take you to 60 in under 5 seconds, or an Exige in under 4 sec, but certainly wouldn't want one.
Now the newer M5's are a quality looking vehicle, but for $85,000 I'd opt to take a Cadillac CTS-V any day, and the good old American iron would run rings around the M5 and also comes with a 100,000 mile warranty. If the 556HP engine isn't enough, you can do a Hennessey upgrade to 700HP with the 20 grand difference in price.

Heck i still like my car and was even planning on buying 20 inch matte black giovanna kilis for my tl.I already tested the m5 im planing on buying but like i said when it comes to interior my tl is far more luxurious than the m5 but the m5 has a cool agressive look to it and has the engine to back it up.And the thing is that the m5 just came to mind so i did a little research and most pages say its pretty reliable but obviously expensive to maintain and also its dropping from an 04 which i was desperate to get and finally got it back to a 01 car but they are mostly both in the same price range until the new 2011-12 m5 comes out damn i'm brain fried still need more opinions.P.S yes turbonut the 2010 cts-v is way more better looking than the e60 m5 in my opinion.

Don't forget fuel mileage... that M5 loves gas.. drinks it like beer! I was looking at an '09 M5.. 11-17MPG... ouch

Will the M5 be your daily driver? If so, I would keep the TL. If not, ditch the TL and get the M5.

The E39 M5 is still an awesome machine even 11 years later. Look at the cars you just compared it to. A couple of tiny sports cars and two sedans that still cost over $85K. It was at the top of every car magazines performance sedan list every year it was produced. I remember a car magazine had it ranked above the 2004 Benz E55 because it was the best balanced car even though it was an older design. I think it's lines are classic, so much so that the new 5 series took a step back from the last model years design to evolve more from the E39.

Driving wise it is so much better than the TL. Power, handling, steering and suspension is all better than the TL. Even sitting at idle the car is so smooth compared to the TL. The advantage of the TL is obviously its reliability and cost of ownership.

If this is going to be your only car then it would not be a good idea getting one because the maintenance will be very expensive and time consuming. Price out parts on a brake job and compare it with the cost on your last one with the TL. Also, the MPG will be significantly lower in the M5 and insurance rates higher.

Financially it's not a good choice but if it will bring you a lot of pleasure than it might be worth it...that decision is up to you.

That's a damn nice BMW, but for me it will be a "Sunny Sunday" car.If you and your wife can use the odussey as your daily driver w/o problems..........go for it!! Maybe this is a once-in-a-life oportunity to get that M5.

Im sorry Ive driven plenty of rwd cars including the e60 m5(extensively driven)...and from the prices Ive seen on auto trader you have to be on crack to pay 17 grand for an 11yr old 67k german car...you're better off turbocharging/sc your tl or buying an nsx...lol...look i love bimmers...the dealership experience is impeccable.... but have you brought any parts from them?..to give you an idea i had to do an oil change on an 06 e60 bmw....we could only buy the oil filter from bmw and the damn thing cost 21 dollars for only a drop in paper element!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....but hey i had some free ice cream....LOL

m5's leather covered dash (real leather) looks great. I think TL looks good, but the materials on the dash are years ahead on the M5.

I compared it to the small sports car to only simulate the performance and RWD criteria as stated earlier, but both leave a lot to be desired. Not sure where you got two sedans that cost over $85 grand as the CTS-V is only $60,000.

Back to the OP, you asked for opinions, so if it fits your style, purchase the car as we all has our likes/dislikes and as you surmise, I'll give it :thumbsdow

The m5 is up for 15 grand and i could get it for 13 if i brainwash the owner im selling my tl for 15500 hoping to get 14500 or 14000 wish leaves me with 1 grand in my pocket o and my tl has the same mileage as the m5 77000 miles you see where i'm getting at.

Sorry I just took the $85k from your post where you were referring to the new M5. You're still comparing it to a car that costs $60K. That is a little more than you can get an E39 M5 for...a little being a brand new TL.

Everyone has their opinions but the E39 M5 was the benchmark in performance sedans. I don't think it's a good idea getting one strictly because of the maintenance costs but outside of that it's a fantastic vehicle.

A 2008 M5 CPO goes for around $50K, if that is any benchmark.... 11-17MPG.. ouch.. still hurts to type that.. I was looking at one until I saw that.. looks great, feels great, kicks ass but....
If maintenance costs aren't an issue, go for the M5

OP: You should visit m5board.com and read through some of the threads about the common repairs and maintenance costs that people are having. You will probably hear people having a maintenance fund of $2k set aside for repairs that might come up at any given time.

How long do you think that $1k will last you with owning an M5? You might want to buy some punctuations with it.

Lol... perhaps to someone that has never owned one but honestly, having already owned an M and AMG, thanks but no thanks. The novelty runs out pretty quick and that interior is just tired looking.
