Sumitomo HTR+ Tires

Does any one have any opinions on the following tire to replace the terrible EL42's?:

Sumitomo (Su mi to' mo) HTR+ is an Ultra High Performance All-Season

They are only $89 each on tire rack compared to the michelin pilot a/s at $200 each; and they have excellent ratings see web site:

i have used sumitomo's before they are good tires for the money. they are not popular because they do not advertise as much as the other tire brands. i have also used kumho's as well, which is another one of those bang for the buck tires. i have not gotten my car yet so i do not know how bad hte EL42's are. but the both the sumitomo's and kumhos are good tires.

I had the sumis on my TL type S. They had very good grip but as they wore they developed serious noise issues. The are also budget priced. Personally, there are better options, although all cost a lot more. If your planning to switch good options are pilot sports, pirellis, potenzas re 750 and goodyear F1.

Yes, I have narrowed my choice down to these 2 tires below:

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (Ultra High Performance All-Season)
Pirelli PZero Nero M&S (Ultra High Performance All-Season)

Which one do you think is a better choice overall? Thank you for your opinion

IMO, I may pick Michelin since I have seen more reviews on this tire.

BTW, Nicki, I think you're the only girl here as I know driving 6MT, right? In this crowded NYC...

Super.

And don't forget THE best tires for the buck: Falken ZIEX ZE 512 that are both cheap and are #1 high performance tire in Consumer Reports' November of 2003 roundup.

www.edgeracing.com sells them for $85-89 per tire. I got them on my car and love them!

I have personally not used any of them but if you research tire rack the pirelli is the ultimate dry traction tire, unfortunately it is also short lived. In good old tire tradition it gives up treadware for maximum traction. If I were going to buy something soon I would buy the Potenzas re 750. If you read the surveys and tests it appears to be a better overall tire, great traction wet or dry, quiet, and good treadwear. Personally I dont dislike the turanzas bad enough to discard them till they wear out, judging their groove depth they wont last very long anyway. At the moment i'm using blizzak LM22.

The Michelins and Neros have both received positive reviews from TL owners. I've got the Michelins and they are hands down a huge step up from the EL42s.

I had two sets of a different Pirelli tire on my previous car, and the only complaint I had was they did not last as long as their treadwear rating implied they might. My brother had a few sets of Pirellis and had the same impression.

Although the Michelins are more expensive to buy, in the long run they may end up closing the gap substantially just by lasting longer.

I'll be going with the Falken 512's when the time comes. The few forum users who have them, love them. Though the Michelins are definitely a step up from the EL42's, I think they're overpriced and according to most reviews I've read, NOISY.

Consumer Reports ratings:

Nicki,
Try Cosmos Tire in Long Island City near the Triborough Bridge, (718) 545-7484. They have the Falkens in stock and recommend them highly over the Michelins AND the Pirellis.

The HTR+ is a good tire for what it's worth, especially being very cheap. I had them on my IS300. I have the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my GS now and love them. They are awesome for an Ultra High Performance All Season Tire! Worth every penny, not to mention a very high treadwear rating (400)

It all depends on which tires you're gonna compare with. Also, Tirerack.com's review/rating is not always accurate. (Lots of ppl here do indicate Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires are apparently a little noisy. )

IMO, sometimes the HPTs seem louder a little bit than touring tires.

Read in individual owner reviews for the Pilot Sport A/S on tirerack. The noise complaints for this tire are commonplace.

The Tire Rack reviews are not measurements. I've got the PSAS on my 04 and yes, they are noisier than the EL42s, but only slightly. Are they noisier than the Falken or the Nero? I have no idea, and I can't say I would be able to tell that by reading any review or comparing any survey results on Tire Rack.

All these ultra high performance tires are noisier than all season radials except for the Potenzas RE075.

I'm not sure about that; I had a Cadavalier rental in San Jose last week that had the loudest tires I've heard in a long time, and those certainly were not ultra high performance tires.

The TL has such good sound deadening that even though the Tire Rack reports say, for instance, that the Michelins are very loud, my experience is that very little additional noise gets into the car from them.
