Stupid Q for 5 spd auto

I always drive automatics, but I keep my hand on the shifter like it was a manual. People tell me I am wierd, but it is just how I have always done it. From pics it doesn't look like there is a stopper under drive. Is it likely that if I hit a bump that I would accidently pull the shifter to low while driving? Do you have to push it sideways before pulling down? Hard to tell from pic

I hold my hand on the shifter, old habit, and have never had a problem. There is a notch that you have to get around to move to either low or over to the SS. You have to push it sideways and rather hard down to get it in. Not a problem at all.

I rest my hand on the shifter as well. I've never accidentally pulled it into low, but I have accidentally pushed it into neutral when stopping.

Me too. Never had a problem. I do it because I started driving with manual trannies.

moreace, when are you getting your TL? Been waiting for YOUR report. (just applying peer pressure)

No worries, unless your left foot is also unconscously hunting for a clutch pedal, in which case you are exhibiting textbook symptoms of 6MT envy.

you can also slide the padded elbow rest forward, and have your hand on the shifter and elbow on the pad. This seems like it reduce the "impact" of hitting a bump.

Well my car only has 50,200 miles so I never was rushed.
Now leaking brake fluid. Need front and rear rotors, rear pads, rear calipers are frozen. Entire rear brakes are extremely rusted. ABS actuater is gone. Transmission solenoid...... U see where this is going. Car is 10 years old and not worth much so what the hey.

Would gone this week, but real busy. Sad, but 1st test drive on Fri and hope to buy with in a week after.

Any idea if I might be waiting and how long I need to for

Well I can honestly say that during very spirited driving once or twice i did jump out of the SS gate. Nothing bad can happen but its a little disconcerting when your all wound up. The same can happen with a manual many are the stories of blown engine when you downshift to second instead of fourth, fotunately with ss thats impossible!

I've never owned a manual and don't know how to drive one, but.... there's my hand on the shifter. Always done it. It's a good place to rest the arm.

Haha, my friend test drove the 6MT this weekend with me in it (the first time I've sat in a 6MT TL) and shifted from 6th to 2nd ...well, halfway anyway. We lurched, he saw the RPMS fly up, so he slammed the clutch and switched to 4th properly. That was interesting.
