Stuck Up 3rd Gen TL Drivers
Now that these things are becoming affordable in the used market it's a different demographic again. "Thugs" and other gems of society are getting their hands on these cars so the big rims and other garbage start adding on...
This is a comfortable, peppy (fun to drive), reliable, safe, car that gets me to work and back, is great on trips and a wonderful all around vehicle. If someone wants to do tasteful mods to it I can appreciate that, but that's about it.
An OEM underbody kit, some a-spec wheels, volks, rdx 19"s, BBK, slight drop to eliminate wheel gap all look fantastic on the 3G.... I wouldn't do much more to the car's exterior though and expect people to fall head over heels in love with it as I drive by.
If anything, older folks in stock TL's give me a look that says "damn kids messing with a perfectly good luxury sedan".
What is considered tasteful in our community is considered "cheap aftermarket wheels, loud ricer exhaust and undriveably low" in the eyes of the avg 50yr old TL driver.

Unless you live in my town, I bet we have you beat. There is a riced out cop car a few suburbs over. Big wing, fart tip, and those cheap Kmart fake chrome hubcaps. I'm pretty sure it's a drug-seizure car, but still. . Don't put police lights on that and expect people to take you seriously.
[QUOTE=leedogg;11971121]Ever notice some stuck up 3g TL drivers that are all modded and riced out and expect everyone else to worship the ground they walk on because they think their ride is the shit?
Gotta agree (in a tongue-n-cheek fashion). I appreciate those who like to mod their cars. I've done a few mods to my Vette in fact, but our '04 TL will remain stock. Our TL has 90,000+ miles on it. Not sure the Vette can make it that far.
Really Italiano, don't expect me to admire your work (unless I know you installed the supercharger yourself). If you want to play the "wave to each other" game, hop on corvetteforum.com and search "save the wave" to see how sensitive they are. IMHO, in the world of ricers the TL isn't like the Civic when it comes to serious modding recognition (and bling value). Civics have gotten most of the modding attention in the ricer world and that's probably not gonna change anytime soon. Bottom line is for you to enjoy your ride. You earned it!!

Alot of you guys are missing the point. i had to come up with a name to this thread. i dont expect people to worship me or do i think i am the shit. i know my car is no where close to being riced out. all my mods are tasteful and quality products from vendors on this site. i do the mods mainly for my pleasure. and i have had a good share of compliments. i just wanted to hear from my fellow ziners have they experienced the same reactions from other people with non modded cars. you got to admit it feels good when you pass another stock tl and you know yours sticks out and remembering when yours used to look plain, lol. i wasn't personally attacking anyone with my thread.
i was washing my stock WDP TL-s at my friends garage ( i dont have my own sadly) and this old woman across the street (80 years +) comes over jsut to compliment on my car. she just recently had surgery on her knees and takes like 2 min to cross a 2 lane street.
i have to admit i really appreciated that i mean she went though all that trouble just to say how much she likes the car.

I'm glad you modified your car for your own personal pleasure. From your avatar it looks very clean. Just keep in mind what I said the page earlier, sure I pay attention to another 3G, but I'm not going to readily acknowledge it.
If we were at a gas station filling up, sure I'd tell you clean car I like what you did. When I'm commuting to work, probably not. Don't take it personally.

every thursday i drive to a local sonic where about a hundred cars meet every week, my girlfriend has never understood my car obsession why i spend so much money on my car, and why i enjoy sitting in a parking lot talking about cars. so i brought her with me a couple of weeks ago she now understands why we do this to our vehicles, she put it nicely while i was pulling up and people would give me a thumbs up or say sick, or nice car she said "i get it, its like when i wear a cute outfit and people compliment me on my outfit it makes me feel really good, your car is like my wardrobe." we all may modify our cars for our personal tastes and style, but man does it feel good when someone recognizes the work that you have put in and gives you a thumbs up. whenever i see a car that someone has modified or restored, or even bought i give them a thumbs up letting them know that i respect what they have done, even if i wouldnt do it myself, i respect the effort.
bottom line it feels good to have what you have worked for or hard at recognized even if recognition is not why you did it
i give any honda or acura i see a wave too i like people looking at me like wtf?? why it this guy waving at me?? do i know him?? ha i chuckle every time, and my gf reclines her seat so no one can see her as i do this lol

I'm definitely starting to see more TL's in my area (southeast Wisconsin), but it's not a commodity around here. People definitely notice TL's. BMW's are the dime-a-dozen class around these parts. Basic 3 and 5-series are absolutely everywhere.
That being said, I haven't done anything to make my car look different. Personally I've never been into visual modifications, although I will say that after frequenting these forums as a viewer for a couple years, I have definitely gained an appreciation for some wheel setups that people have put on their rides here.
I never, ever for any reason race my car off of a stop light - the amount of strain it puts on a vehicle is just too much. This car is not designed for it.
However, I have no problems romping on the pedal if I'm at 30 or 40 mph already, and I've had lots of compliments about the V2 intake for sure.
Even if it has an A-spec kit and some wheels, I think most people see this car as a solid, sharp-looking daily driver and the majority of compliments I receive on it are in passing conversation. I was just talking to someone at work the other day who saw me in the parking lot and noted "you drive an acura TL don't you? blah blah blah".
People recognize it as a slick car, but make no mistake - it isn't a head-turner in the same way an exotic would be - like if I was driving a Lotus Exige-S down the street or something.

Ive had a TL follow me just to wave at me.. I think they noticed the greddy exhaust and that I was so low..
Only other TLs that wave are the ones that are hooked up.. I usually get a thumbs up from other hooked up hondas tho..

I hurt my ankle and got temporary permission to park in the "reserved"/aka executive spaces at work for a month. I'm not exaggerating when I say there would be six TL's out of a forty cars at any given time, and another ten or so in the main lots. Relatively speaking, I think those are staggering numbers. It's a popular, middle/upper-middle class car still, even as 3G prices go down. I mod to add my own touches to make my ride special and distinguish it from the many others out there. She deserves it. Sure, I'll graciously accept any compliments, but I don't really look for any recognition from anyone else.

I had a guy a week ago in a 3G TL-S give me a thumbs up as he passed me.
Today when I was getting my ice cream fix at Dairy Queen, a woman parked her 07 WDP TL next to mine. Her 3 sons, all younger than 10, hopped out of the car and were pointing at everything different between her car and mine. I was walking back to my car and I told her that she had good taste in cars. She laughed and started asking about my car, mostly my tint. Her sons loved my switchbacks. That situation alone made me proud of my car.
On the contrary I had some asshole in a 3G SSM TL roar up on my ass while I was in the right lane, he got beside me, downshifted, and gunned it up to 70 or so in a 45. I pulled up next to him at the next red light and he gave me the cool "what up nod" while he was all bent over the steering wheel gangster style. I smirked, shook my head, and turned right.

QFT... I'm 26 and I feel the same way. I bought this car b/c I was annoyed by the demographics of the drivers in RSX's and other sport compacts. Everywhere I went people wanted to race my RSX. I thought of my TL as more of a grown up car.

To the rest of this thread, I came from a different group. If I saw another GN on the road we always ended up pulled over, exchanging numbers, and talking for an hour or two. My friends with Vettes all get the wave when passing another Vette.
When my TL was brand new in '06 I got a lot of people saying nice car but they were not fellow TL owners. I don't care if someone looks at my car, in fact I prefer them not to. But I am amazed sometimes how other TL owners won't look over if their life depended on it. It's like if they look in the direction of another TL they will die or something. This goes for old, young, male or female.
The other type of TL person is the one that sits there next to you at a redlight and seems to not notice you're there and then punches it on green.
I've noticed the TL-S owners generally show more interest in the car.
Unfortunately the most interest shown is from the Civic crowd always trying to race me. I would rather put a beating on them than race them.

One interesting thing I've noticed is higher salary doesn't necessarily mean a nice car. I've got one of the nice cars at work and I'm in the bottom 1/3 of the payscale. Go to the 150K+ and most of them drive 15yr old beaters but they own things like million dollar homes, a couple boats, planes, etc. I'm a car guy so even if I had those things I think the cars would always be a priority but I can see how a car could take second or third place if you could afford things like that.
The 300K+ category at work which is about 5-10%%, all with reserved parking spots includes a few Porsches (one of which my TL outran at Willow lol), 7 series and S class Mercedes. It was fun when my friend traded cars with me for his road trip. He took my TL because of it's gas mileage (he's cheap) and I got the CL65 AMG Mercedes. I got some funny looks from the top 10% guys when I pulled up in the most expensive car in the parking lot for nearly a week.
"Old people" has nothing to do with it.
MOST people don't give two shits about your car; no matter what they're driving or how old they are. It's just not something that interests them.
That kind of person won't even notice you (let alone realize your car is not stock) unless you act like an ass.

My friend's dad is making close to 200k a year. He drives an '07 CR-V, his wife an '07 suburban. Instead, they have a couple of houses that they rent out and a vacation home.
Our family friends who coincidentally paid for our whole weekend in Carmel, CA for an engagement present is the same way. Dad's an executive, mom's a homemaker, no payments on the BMW or Lexus. Beautiful home (comps are going for $1.3 million in their neighborhood) The kids go to private schools and share a Mazda 3 with no payment, they take off 4-5 times a year for a nice vacation.
I couldn't have said it better. Another reason I've tried to keep mine close to stock looking is because I don't want to be associated with a certain crowd.

I think a lot of it has to do with people think "it's just a car". My mom has that feeling about her car and she doesn't understand why I've had 3 cars already and I've poured money into each one.
I dont really care if they notice me or not..My last car which was a modded mitsu evo 8 got an assload of attention...I rather not have people bother me and talk about "what do you have done to the car"..blah blah blah
