Spring thoughts of adding a sub-woofer
I'm not looking to blow the windows out of my car, just add a little more depth to the system so when I'm listening to either 38 Special, Fog Hat, Disturbed or even Elton John (I know, I'm all over the map) if there is a hit below 80hz I want to feel it.
I'm going to do some research soon and would like some ideas, reminder I'm not looking to make my wifes ears bleed or show off to kids down the street, just tighten up the sound and give it some kick.
I used to compete and took first two years straight but have missed out on about 12 years of car audio technology and will admit to needing a shove in the right direction.

Would it be possible to replace the 8" with an 8" and an amp of its own? I don't want to wake up the neighborhood or give up trunk space, either.

I don't plan on replacing the current subwoofer, just add one to handle the deeper frequencies that the current setup neglects.
If I had my way I would find a way to remap the crossover so that nothing below 120hz went to the current woofer and everything below 120hz would be sent to the new sub.
I wrote Acura for the wiring diagram/schematic so when I do this it's done right. I've talked to a few high end car hi-fi dealers and all of them raised an eyebrow when they saw the system.
Some had read about it and the few that called it crap so they could try to sell me an entire system will not be getting my business.
If anybody knows of a very reputable place in the Chicago Northwest suburbs, let me know.

Rocketsfan,
I was planning on adding an amp to go with the new sub, I don't think I'd want to replace what's already there for the current driver, just make it better.
Since the seats don't fold down a small powerfull amp can be installed off to the side and either a free air sub or a sealed enclosure could fit the bill.
I'm having all sorts of ideas on this, but it's been a long time and car audio has changed 1000% since I was competing.

Doing it right may mean swapping out the stock sub for a port tube in it's place from the new sub, I'd nead to replace the rear drivers with better mid bass drivers in this scenario also.
