Should I follow the Service Message or do what dealer insists upon???

My service message has been popping up lately and it indicates that I need A12 service. I believe that's only an oil change and the cabin filter (I may be mistaken). Regardless, I called the local dealership and the service advisor tells me that I need "D" service instead which is about $515.00 because I skipped a service interval in there somewhere. This is the only service that I've seen since the last "B" service I had.

Opinions?

I would just do the A12. You did not mention the miles on your car, but other than brakes, transmission fluid change(whenever that is due on our car) I would not worry about a thing. Other than brakes and oil your car can go 100K with no problem.

According to the service manual there is no "D" service... That doesn't necessarily mean your dealers full of shit, but it is quite possible they are.

Many dealers try to upsell service. They will very often recommend extra services that are not really necessary. It is best to educate yourself, like your doing now, and only get the things you really need.
Take a look in the owners manual for the recommended services for your mileage.

My dealer wanted a LOT of money for a tranny oil change ONLY (something like $200) at the 30,000 mark or so. I checked to see what else would be done and learned that other than the tranny fluid change the only other thing they would do would be typical oil and lube. Honda and found that they would do the EXACT same tranny fluid change (with the EXACT same fluid and filter) for $39.50. Guess who I had do it. The next time into the shop for warranty stuff, Acura wanted me to do the tranny service again. I simply informed them that their "our" authorized service center had done it for me at the required time. They said, OK and did the warranty work. No problem so it does depend on who you dealer is but if it's the tranny only Honda can do it right and much, much cheaper (with the eXACT same components). Oh yea, and the cabin air filter is something like $25.00 but the dealer charges something like $70 for the filter plus an hour and a half of labor. Depending on rates in your area that could be another $150. Buy it your self IMHO (At least that's what I am planning to do)

My car's just over 31000 miles. So I guess it's just the tranny and the oil change. I had a feeling about the "upselling" so I decided to check first. Thanks for everyone's response.

This is a do-it-yourself project if there ever was one
