Service Schedule - A/B 1/2/3/4/5 at what mileage(s)?

I'm thinking about buying a 2005 TL with 87k miles, so I'm trying to plan for future service visits. I have the Maintenance Minder, but that is not helpful for understanding what maintenance is upcoming. Would someone tell me the relevant codes (B1, A5) for different mileages, or at least the significant mileages? Thanks in advance!

15k/45k/75k - ?
30k/60k/90k - ?
105k - timing belt, etc., what else?

your maintenance minder will let you know...but for an idea...

there is a "maintenance schedule" by mileage function on edmunds.com if you enter in the info for the TL. it gives you an idea of when by miles and what needs to be performed. its not going to be exact b/c everyone drives in different conditions which will determine when your car tells you what needs to be done. at least it will give you a rough estimate.

for the letters/numbers listed by the MM...get the maintenance brochure at the dealer, it lists all the different services to be performed for each respective letter and number. or look in your owner's manual.

hope this helps.

The 3G service schedule is mostly controlled by the MID (Multi-Information Display). Here's a link to an online 04TL owner's manual. You can go to page 199 to look at the maintenance intervals:

http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/p...404MAINIDX.pdf

Oil change (A and B) is usually 5K-7.5K, higher for highway, lower for city. Note that Acura only recommends a filter change every other oil change. Most folks change the filter every time..

"1" is rotate tires, can't honestly remember how often that comes. I always just rotate tires every oil change, regardless of the MID

"2" I think comes every 4th oil change or 30K, not sure. Filter change is sooner (15K) for dusty conditions....

"3" is transmission oil change. Somewhere beyond 60K miles (60K is for harsh conditions). However, most folks with ATs get the Acura crap fluid out of the case as soon as possible...

"4" is timing belt/spark plug change, inspect valve clearance. Usually comes around 105K

"5" is engine coolant. Heck if I know, I'm at 103K and I haven't got it yet. I did go ahead and flush my system at the 5 year point...probably overkill....

mileage is not really a factor with the MID but it does have tendencies.

A and B subcodes are stupid and should just be 1 letter. Basically A is oil only, B is oil + filter which is what everyone does anyway

Subcode 1 rotate tires will just about always be on with service A or B if you have gone over about 5000 miles since last change. If you drive hard and its only been like 3500 the MID will usually only say A or B

Subcode 2 air filters usually 25-30k miles. You will 99.9% see it with B 1,2

Subcode 3 trans fluid does very slightly. I usually see that appear with subcodes 1,2 around 50-60k.

Subcode 4 is the timing belt/plug change. Pretty much once you hit 100k its gonna be on soon. I have seen it come on with all the other codes or by itself.

Subcode 5 is pointless since you should replace the coolant with the waterpump when you replace the timing belt (of course this is purely subjective to each owner) Honestly have never seen this code pop up.

The MID does not control brake fluid, ps fluid or alignments. Brake fluid should be changed every 3 yrs regardless of milage. P/S fluid is not even recommend to change although it gets very dirty so I dont know why. I change mine every 60k. Alignments are not mentioned in the owners manual ever. Thats you and whoever is doing your work to decide when needed.

Agreed. I replaced my trans fluid (with more of the same Honda-Z1 fluid) for the first time at 90k and regret it. I'm nearly certain that was the first time I saw the code! I started getting shudder around 120kish. I have since replaced the fluid with Redline Racing ATF/Lightweight racing ATF which has cured it, but I know that my trans has experienced unnecessary damage. Many on this forum will make the following 2 recommendations instead of what the MID suggests:
  1. Perform regular drain and fills to keep the fluid fresh. Some folks will say to do a single drain and fill every 15k or something along those lines. Others will tell you to do a 3 x 3qt fluid replacement every 30k or something along those lines. Either way, it's the same idea: get some fresh fluid in there.
  2. Do not continue to use the Honda/Acura Z1 fluid as it contains too much friction modifiers which causes unnecessary transmission wear.

At 130k, I didn't recall having seen this code either. It's quite possible I missed it or blew it off, so at 130k/6yrs I figured I had gone long enough and finally replaced it.
