Saying goodbye to my CTS...newbie questions about TL

Hey guys,

Within the next few days I'm going to be selling my Cadillac CTS. Over the past few months I have looked into several different sport sedans. I pretty much have fell in love with the 04-06 TL. (basically because it fits in my budget also.) Anyways, my tranny blew on my CTS last year and I really don't want to go through that again. I have been hearing that 04 TL's may experience transmission failure. Does this have any truth? I know this is kind of a generic question but is it relatively safe buying an 04-06 with around 80K on it? Is there any major upcoming issues that may happen with this many miles? Thanks in advance.

105K service, which is $500-1300 or so. Trannies sometimes have issues, sometimes not. 04-05 has cracking dash issues, and some cars like to rattle.

Other than that, the cars are relatively solid. If you want the best experience, get an 07-08 Type-S with a 6 speed, you'll have to search, but it'll be worth it.

Welcome to the forums.

If your deadset on an AT you are safer buying an 06. That's not meant to imply that if you buy an 04/05 your screwed. I have an 05 with 103k miles with no tranny issues or cracked dash. The big service is at 105k- which is the timing belt/water pump et al service.

Lol...id love to get a TL-S, simply cannot afford it right now. Thanks ggseq, I am pretty much deadset on AT. I know there is no telling when a tranny is going to blow but if you were me would you definitely look for an 06 and up?

06 and up is a safe bet, but you won't exactly suffer with an 04/5, though some issues that were present in the 04/5s were fixed.

ohh man, you guys got me pretty leery about buying an 04/05 now. Do you guys know people on these forums personally that have had to replace trannies?

LOL. I found an 04 with 84K and the A-spec kit on it, needless to say I love it. But then again I dont want to have to deal with a transmission problem down the road. For all you vets out there, are the odds very high that the tranny will go?

I figured I'd chime in since I bought a higher-mileage TL and put on a lot of miles myself after that. I'm at about 126k now, no issues except regular maintenance. I have an 06 A/T. Go for it.

Nice, I've been doing alot of searching and have found that some 04s have been plagued...while not that many 05's. Is this true? Sorry about all these questions but aftering replacing a transmission on a Cadillac I really don't ever want to experience it again!

Don't let them scare you... they are just trying to upfront and honest. But, a few bad apples doesn't deem a whole barrel is bad. Supercharged A/T speaks for itself. Best thing for you to do is test drive it first.

I hear ya, I would rather hear the truth than something sugarcoated tho. When you refer to a few bad apples..are you saying that is an uncommon issue?

all TL tranny's require basic maintenance and care to avoid issues. The older models just require more. If you use the recommended fluids (redline type F) and replace the pressure sensors periodically, you will be fine. Members here have used these techniques on even the earlier notorious 2g TL tranny's with success.

Ive been doing a little research tonight and found that there was a recall done on 04s for the transmission. Does this mean that if a particular vehicle had the recall issue fixed, is it still at risk for bad transmission? Also, are the 05's really still a worry for bad trans like the 04? You would think that they fixed the issue in the 05's, so I would kind of like to know. Thanks again guys. Sorry for all the rookie questions
