RPM at 1000 while warming up

Couple of days ago I put the ignition on and as i was warming up my car, i noticed my rpm was at 1000. Why is it at 1000? Shouldn't it be at 0? Sorry i'm a newb

Well if you think about it, RPM means Revolutions Per Minute - revolutions of the engine. Even though you're not moving, the engine is still running... and "revolving". In your case, it's revolving at 1000 times per minute, which is pretty standard for this time of year when warming it up.

Make sense?

The only time it's at 0 is when the engine isn't running.

yep same here 1000 to 1300 rpm, don't be alarmed a good 5 minutes of warm up should drop it down to 700rpm at idle.

is it supposed to stay stable around that rpm 1000-1300? The rpm seems to change from 900-1200. Guess its normal

When I start the car cold it reads at 1300. In about 45 sec. the idle comes back down to about 1000-1100 and the temp gauge nudges up a bit (Obviously this takes longer when it is colder out....but it never takes more than 3 minutes.) That's my warmup routine. Then I go! Drive gently until the temp gauge hits midway and then you're good.

LOL @ this thread. Anyone ever driven a carbureted car?

Engine needs to idle just a little faster when cold to keep it from stalling and to light off the cats and 02. It's normal and it's a simple rpm vs temp map. The colder it is, the longer it takes to warm up, the longer it's at a high idle.

It's always good to let it settle down to a normal idle before you put it in gear.

you ever hit anything backing out of your garage?

But yeah, it's normal for your engine to idle faster when cold - you might also notice it pulls faster out of your driveway compared to when it's warm.
