Arrow rock vs my windshield and my adventure (pics inside)

I was hoping it wouldn't happen to me but commuting over 100 miles a day, my chances are great. Took 16 months and if finally happened. The crack is right above the center console.

That's a nickel I'm holding next to it. The crack is about the size of a dime. I have State Farm as my insurance and they referred me to 3 different shops.

The first one is All Star. I went to a location close to my work (2 miles) away which was convenient. They checked it out but said they couldn't do it because the crack is too close to the dashboard. They use a torch to heat up the solution and it might burn my dash. a torch? They suggested to just get it replaced. The OEM glass and labor is about $800. My deductible is $500. I told them that I'll get back to them. I remember reading posts from here (I LOVE THIS PLACE!) and crack like these don't need the windshield replaced.

So I call shop #2. Phone number not in service

Shop #3. Finally! They can do it and they don't use a torch. Set up a schedule for tomorrow morning and they'll come to my work and do it. Hope they'll let me take pics so I can share it with my fellow Acuraziners. The crack won't disappear but the process will prevent the crack from spreading. It bugs me a little seeing the crack but I'd rather have be that size than spend $800 on a new one, where I still won't be able to prevent the next rock.

Couple of things I found out today:
- the crack is repairable if...
- not in the driver's line of site
- not bigger than a nickel or a quarter
- my insurance covers unlimited amount of windshield repairs but the law limits you to 3 repairs per windshield. they would have to be replaced after the third repair.

I will post pics during the repair (if they allow me) and after the repair.

I would guess there's an additional charge for this, right? I'm already paying $254/month but times like these I don't seem to mind because I don't have to hassle with processing many things. I will look into that. Is there a limit on how many times can you replace the windshield, per year maybe?

On my old car, I had a windshield replaced by an onsite service and they really did a crappy job. Make sure you choose an outfit that does quality work. Mine had black caulk oozed out around the edges and the weatherstrip they installed went to Hell in only a few months. Also, the glass had a ripple just below my field-of-view that bugged me to no end. Of course, they were the cheapest.

W1n78, how did u get that on windshield? Did a rock fell off from a truck in front of you?

City I live here uses tons of sand and tiny rocks during the winter in heavy snow. Although I never got something that big on my car.

not sure. i know it's not from following a truck coz the damage should've been much smaller than that, plus i was on the #2 lane doing around 68-70MPH. then i hear the high pitch sound-like glass cracking/breaking. looked on the windshield and that's what i found. at first i thought it was a bug but as i looked closer it wasn't must've ricochet off something and hit me coz of the velocity it needed to create that kind of impact

a day later and my problem has been fixed. times like these i don't mind paying that much on my insurance. never had to hassle over anything, yet

here's some pics after they fixed it

you can still see the crack but it's much better than it was yesterday, plus it won't spread. insurance is paying for the repair and they only charged $50. the whole process only took 15 minutes. i feel a little better now. i'll be replacing the windshield soon

I have glass coverage for my Acura and Toyotas.

I had the windshield on my Solara replaced a few months ago, at no cost to me, and in my parents driveway. The glass place did a neat job, and all's still well with the windshield and seal several months later.

Regards,

Last year before I purchased my '04TL, I got a rock chip in the windshield of my '02TLS. My insurance company agreed to replace the windshield and one of those companies that come to your home did the job. They used aftermarked glass and it was horrible. The job was OK, but the glass wasn't as good as the Honda windshield. If I wasn't selling the car, I would have been very upset. Just make sure when you get the glass replaced they use genuine factory parts. The aftermarket windshield just doesn't cut it.

Most insurance covers glass replacement with no deductable. Consider switching! I also don't think it's a good idea to have them come to you to replace a windshield. I'd rather let them keep it for a day so I know it's done right. If the car is not kept at the right temp I don't think the window seals properly.

the only thing missing in the parking lot is an underground structure. this is the back portion of the parking lot where i work, so mostly everyone parks in the front. plus we have security driving around in golf carts and cameras. there's a couple of nice cars here. i usually park next to the same jaguar and 3-series with at least 3 spaces in between. also a couple of 745s and SC430s but they all park in the front. haven't found one of those with a ding yet so i guess everyone respects others' car here. i still won't take the chance . matter of fact i left my door unlocked the whole day and it wasn't even messed with. plus the jaguar i park next to left a window open. this is an outdoor parking. one day, i'd buy the security people a nice bottle of "whatever they like" just for keeping the area the way it is

jetlock: so when i replace the windshield do i order it from honda/acura dealer or do i let the glass company who will replace it to order that part?

apwalsh: who's your insurance co? i'm hesitant to leave just coz i've never had to hassle with anything if i needed to call state farm plus my family has been with them for so long, we good a reasonable discount.

I think FL state law mandates that Insurance companies provide 0 deductible for windshields.

I use travelers, but I spoke with a friend who also has state farm and he's positive that he also has a $0 deductable on glass. It might have something to do with the state you are in.

Holly shit, why is your insurance so expensive? Are you a bad driver? When I was 26 my Insurance was nowhere near that.

Has alot to do with location. He's in CA, which generally has higher insurance rates than NC.

coz i'm in CA. not a bad driver. i'm more careful now with this car as well. only had 3 tickets since i started driving. 2 for speeding and 1 moving violation. also, i didn't get my license until i was 18. didn't want to drive in high school coz i didn't want to be a limo driver to all my friends. according to state farm, my insurance will drop to almost half of what i'm paying now in september 2006 - 9 years after i got my license. aren't you glad you don't live in CA

apwalsh: can you ask your friend who has state farm if he knows what they call that plan/program where it's $0 deductible for windshield replacement? thx

my backseat right window is cracked (below the panel so you cant pull the moldind and peek under) because the idiot tint installer didnt correctly put the window on track. So when i rolled it down it tightened up, went really slow, and must have cracked.

I am guessing insurance WONT cover this. How much can i expect it to cost to replace this one window?
