Resetting your ECU: After mods and Environment changes

After reading this thread I decided to reset my ECU yesterday. It started out by bringing my TL to Autozone to have them test the battery. It seemed to be starting slower and with 55K on the odo. I figured it was going, but it checked out "good". Anyway, for a while my car seemed really sluggish and it was driving me nuts. Pulled off the negative for a few minutes, reconnected, and let idle for 10 min. Turned it off, restarted it and began to drive it hard. I can't believe what a difference it made. I question if it's just psychological thinking it really is quicker now b/c I did this. As far as remembering shift points, I'm sure that deals with the automatic. I have a 6MT, what does the computer "learn" as far as the shifting?

A brief search of Honda/Acura Tech articles does not produce documents to negate Atrain's assertation and it seems to me that Honda/Acura would flaunt it if they had it.
So, my statement was either from misinformation I recieved or a misunderstanding of something I was told or read - the AT apparently DOES NOT "learn" adaptive shift points based on driving style/habits.

Atrain hates me.
While clearly your knowledge is more in depth than mine, are you certain that the EEC-V didn't make it into the Mustang in '89? I do know that the '89 model received MAF instead of speed density (just speaking about the Mustang here).
Anyway, I do thank you for your clarifications. And I have to tell you that I actually cried a little the day I sold my Mustang. I watched the guy drive off with it from the front of my house. At least he was an Ok person. He called me up about 3 months after buying the car to let me know how much he liked it and that he had "not wrapped it around a tree". He also asked again when I replaced the clutch and I again told him that it was the stock unit and that it wouldn't make any sense to change a clutch after only 77,000 miles.

I just got my car back from the shop, it's been two whole months since I drove my TL. Just had new engine put in and the car can't pass emissions test. The told me that the ecu is not picking up the new parts and I should put 3000 miles on it so it can adjust and pick up the new engine mod. So what's the easiest way to do this.

Most likely, yes.
Having the voltage drop below a certain threshold will trigger a reset.
One time I had let my battery become too drained while I had the interior lights on and the engine turned off. When I tried to start it, the battery had just barely enough power to start the engine. But, the engine did barely fire-up. Once started, I had discovered that the ECU did a complete reset due to the voltage drop while cranking.

I used to "re-set" almost every other week because my Braille b2015 battery would get drained. I now have a Tomioka Racing TR-B2100 battery (that's 21 pounds to you Inaccurate) and no more dead battery issues. Re-setting the ECU always seems to make the engine sound stock quiet at first.

I used the Honda HDS at the dealer to reset mine. No radio codes needed and it really took to my RV6 TDE and J-pipe IMO.
Idle doesnt stumble as bad and sounds and feels smoother through powerband.
Just make sure all electronics and A/C are off after reset and while idling. It needs to re-learn the idle under no load whatsoever.
I do believe in this even if some don't.

^^^ Imsurprise no one posted that sooner ^^^but I believe there's a little more to it than that I think you have to turn the key on put your foot down on the gas turned it off turning back let go put it down I'm not sure people might want to search for there but that is the best way...the reason I don't think that's the Right way is because if I remember correctly the turnkey gas down click your heels twice thing a light blinks on your dash panel letting you know the ECU is reset...
also if I remember correctly you have to remove the negative from the battery for at least 20 minutes you don't just have to put in your radio code and now code it'll actually say don't move vehicle wait while GPS is located... but guess you wouldn't get that on a non nav TL. ...
either way resetting your ECU it's always a good idea after installing something new even if the ECU will eventually adjust itself which in our case it does...

88 ford muatang gt ecu
I have an 88 ford mustang gt 5.0 and I recently replaced my ecu in it. Now the car is running really bad on an idle and blowing black smoking out of the exhaust I used 5 gallons of gas in 3 miles trying to test drive it and nothing changed. All I have done to the car was put headers and flowmaster before the the original ecu went out. The car ran perfect when the before the original ecu went out. One guy said I may need a new prom or something like that. I am good with mechanical work but when it comes to the computer I have no idea what I am doing.
