While the message is one, push and hold the reset button for 20 seconds or so. It will ask you if you want to clear the message, and you just confirm that you do.

this brings me to wonder... does the "oil life" indicator actually measure the oil's cleanliness or does it just reduce according to mileage...

No measurement of cleanliness. Just computes based on type of driving, speed, distance, elapsed time, and probably outside temperature.
