I believe you do have to keep the car in neutral if your using a remote start. Here's a thread on remote starts:

You do have to keep the car in neutral if you use remote start. If you have it in gear and try to remote start, the car will lurch forward over and over while it's trying to start (not safe). This is why remote start on manual is illegal.

That said, I had it on my old Evo and loved it. About 3-5 minutes before I was ready to go, if it was cold, I would start up the car. Car was all defrosted and warmed up ready to roll by the time I got out there.

Compustar products work with manual transmissions. You have to put the car in "Reserve" mode before you exit the car. It's simple. You park, leave it in neutral, pull the e-brake, remove the key from the ignition (the car stays running) then exit the vehicle. When you shut the door, the engine turns off and the remote start brain knows the car is in neutral.

If you open the doors during the reserve mode, the car will not remote start. In theory, someone could then put the car in gear.

In Anchorage, both my wife and I have had these on our manual transmission vehicles and they worked great. Just don't forget something in your car!
