Question Rear wheel well linings

I was washing my car today and I noticed that the real wheel wells are lined with some type of felt-like material(!) or cloth of some sort. I'm used to seeing the wheel wells lined with that black stuff that makes cleaning the mud/gunk off easy. Is there some engineering purpose to this or have all the luxo entry cars have these? It won't be a pretty sight if mud gets in there and it's a bitch to clean off.

The front wheel wells are normal.

It could be part of the soundproofing improvements for 2004.

yea, it a sound dampening thing, it lessens road noise because you will hear less little rocks get kicked up into the panels
