....with regard to a drag race (1/4 mile run), my money is on the TL-P over a 2000-01 Maxima 4AT.

You should go to the track; it will the be the reality check you need. I'd offer to race you but I already have a few mods (Y-pipe/UR pulley/Injen CAI) so I'd probably obliterate you. However, I've driven the 99-00 TL-P enough times to be confident that my 02 Maxima could take down even in stock trim.
All this said, you are comparing your presupposition with the track experiences of others and myself. Bottomline: Talk is cheap, get to the track.

03 Coupe...so the 01-03 5AT are quicker than the 99s stock? by how much?
So how close was it with the Max?

Starting with the 2000 model, the TL had a 5AT. This helped acceleration by some 1/2 second to 60. It was a significant increase, especially considering that the 5AT was not the only upgrade. Acura did a little engine tweaking to give more torque at a lower RPM for the 2000+ models.

The maxima wasn't stock, and by the sounds of the TL it wasn't stock either.. I could be wrong on the TL, but I don't know too many people that would put rims on a stock car, before touching the engine, then race on the street. The more probable situation is the guy has a couple of engine mods, and then bought rims... Making a modded Maxima creep on a 99TL, and eventually edge out the TL at 160km/h - 180km... We are suposed to be suprised? Who can vouch for what mods are in each car? until then I would have to say... good race.
Plus those cars are damn near even, gettign a car and a half up to 200km/h is not that much at all, and the results could fluxuate with races that close.

I don't know about "pulling on them pretty easily." My friend owns a 00TL(5at), with these mods: Comptech Icebox, Throttle Body, Spark Plugs, Tran cooler, Pulley, Comptech Headers, and Comptech Exhaust. While he has never taken it to the track, we did race a couple of times from a roll with my 2003 Maxima AT(when I was stock). From 40-120, he'd have no more than a car length on me. Of course now that I'm modded, I pull on him no problem. Based on what he did to me when I was stock, his car is running in the mid 14's AT BEST.

A 99 TL-P with the 4AT is going to take significant mods to put any distance on a 2002+ Nissan Maxima. What sheermax said is no doubt accurate. Remember, the 02-03 Maxima has 30hp and 30tq over a stock TL-P, and weighs less. One carlength from 40+ isn't significant. I have a feeling that from a dig, the Maxima would dust off even the modded TL-P due to lighter weight and superior torque. The VQ35DE is no joke. I test drove several Maximas with that engine and the torque delivery is instant and generous. Much different than my TL-P.

I have taken my friends stock 04-05 Maxima from a stop to 80 and had him by 1 CL. same goes for another co-workers 3.5 5AT altima which was 1.5 CL.

From my experiences, the 4AT trans in the older 3.5 altimas and 02-03 max's hurt them a bit vs. the 5AT acura trans in the 02-03 TL-S or 04+ TL. The gearing is a bit too tall, especially by the begining of 3rd gear. I've had numerous Maxima encounters for some odd reason.

my 99 is faster than a tl-s and 3G TL auto. actually I believe the tl-s to be faster than the 3G TL auto. I work at a large office and there are a lot of different sports sedans there I have gone up against and the 3G TL auto didn't impress me too much, it is quick, but disconnected when you punch it. my car however puts you back in your seat and you feel the "pull" big time.

Yes, the 5.5G is the 2002-03 model: basically a 2000-01 Maxima (5G) with the powertrain of the 04 Maxima (sans 10hp/9 lb-ft and a 5th fwrd gear on the AT).

Yeah I just don't see an 04+ TL 5AT as standing much of a chance against an 04+ Maxima from a dig. I've driven both, and the TL 5AT has no torque off the line while the Maxima has gobs of it.

That's the difference between a 3.2L and a 3.5L engines. Displacement = torque (especially low end ones). There is no way around it with small displacement except going force induction.

And that's why we dont use seat of the pants dyno's for proving speed.
If that were the case my Jeep is unbeatable. It makes the maxima look like a joke off the line.

Okay, please see F23A4's links to two automatic 04+ Maxima 3.5SE (STOCK) timeslips.
Now, please point me to a stock 04+ TL 5AT that has ran a 14.55 or a 14.2.
Looks like my seat of the pants dyno is accurate based on those timeslips. I've seen TL 6MTs match those times but we are talking about automatics only.

A lot of this depends on the condition of the tires on the maxima. The potenza's that came with my car sucked azz when it came to launching the car. I've sinced moved on to Kumho Ecsta's which are ten times better than the blotenza's.

I love Kumho Ecsta tires, they're a bargain.
The Maxima I drove had the Potenzas and I tried gunning it from a stop and it just seemed to easily overpower the tires. At the slightest hint of aggressive driving the tires screamed in protest, so I know what you mean.
But my statement was the assumption both cars had good tires. There are lots of variables, but all things equal the Maxima weighs less and has a significant torque advantage (02 Max vs 02 TL-P).

wow this Maxima vs TL is heated up.
Yeah even my 3GTL doesn't do any good against Jeep from dead stop. I need at least 30MPH to see some sign of catch up. I do ahve faith in pulling power when vtec changes lobe though.

max vs. TL is an old war, that has been faught hard. Truth be told I would trade my car for a 03 Maxima 6spd in a heartbeat. unless magically my car had a 6spd MT in it when I woke up.

^^^^agree, but 2G TL's don't have 6spd. AT Nissan's I don't really care for, they are great cars but I like my TL too much to switch to an AT Nissan, but the 6spd in the 03 Max is slick and delivers power immediately and they are fast. big difference in MT and AT, I want an MT, but love my car and will keep it until it dies or I kill..........one way or the other. Anything Japanese is a well rounded solid vehicle and the 6's out there are awesome. I just wish the 2G TL's had a MT option. why give a cl-s a 6spd and not the tl-s? fucking stupid. I would have a bought a tl-s 6spd if there were one. I just don't like the look of the CL as much as the TL and I need four doors.

I test drove a fully loaded white 2003 Maxima SE 6MT and the car didn't feel great to me. I gunned it a couple of times, torque steer was bad, and the front end just seemed to bounce around. It only had 25k miles, too.

I had the same experience with an 02 6sp...scary torque steer...but the power was impressive..and the 6sp was fun. the car I test drove had stock tires on with 45K on them so they were shot...they made it a little tough to push the car to see its potential..

TS is the same with the 4AT (which doesnt have the benefit of the 6MT's LSD) but can be mitigated with a set of Falkens Ziexs or Michelin Pilots (read: NOT Potenza RE92s )

Given choice of TL 6MT and Max 6MT, I would not get nissan.
Not to mention the new Maxima's funny looking carpeted interior and a gap between windshield and dash. What's up with that? G35 doesn't have any of those but apprently Maxima is screwed up.
