Quite Down Your Open Moon Roof

It was a nice day and I was riding around with the roof open and I couldn’t help but notice just how loud the air rushing over the open roof is. I am talking about driving at speeds up to 60 mph with all the windows closed – above that speed it is annoyingly loud so I just close the roof. Anyways, I put my hand up through the open roof and pushed the pop-up little spoiler down and to mine surprise it got MUCH quieter. I know, I know this sounds crazy but why in the world would they put that in there if it doesn’t help quite it down or reduce the turbulence in the car (there is no difference in the turbulence, my brother was in back and said no more air comes in but he also noticed the difference in noise when I pulled that spoiler type thing down). So everyone should give this a try and see if it quiets down your car and then maybe we could come up with some way to make that thing stay down all the time and not just when the roof pushes it down as it closes. I hope what I wrote everyone understands, if not I can clarify. This bothers me because I like driving with the roof open but as the same time I like a quiet car when I am just cruising. Hopefully this isn’t just something weird with my car and hopefully all you smarter-than-me car guys can dream something up to fix this annoyance.

this "spoiler" is for Aerodynamism ! I dont care about the wind noise, its normal :P I gues you'll have to find a way to keep it down.....scotch tape ? :D lol

Evader 10-01-2007 01:07 PM

I too hate the wind noise, especially when you have passengers and are trying to talk to them. I have a few special clips at home... I wonder if one of these will work. I'll take a look and see tonight

I am not concerned with reducing the resistance of the car through the air, besides. I am sure that it is not reducing it by much. If that was a major concern I would get new mirrors, run narrow tires, weld a big sheet of metal to the underbody of the car, and put a huge defuser for a rear bumper. I was hoping for some ideas that would actually last and would keep the car looking classy. I think scotch tape might be too classy.

Everyone who hates wind noise should try it and see the difference.

BTW I was kiding about the scotch tape....lol way to classy ... Look at your local renovation store you might find some smal clips that you can convert or modify for that purpose.

I'll check the difference of wind noice tonight....

While on the topic of wind noise, can we get rid of the damn wind noise from having the rear windows only down... Holy Shit that's annoying, lol!

1) I too have held the wind deflector down and noticed that it's quieter in the cabin.

2) Yes, is there any way to turn off the ANC so we can ride with the rear windows down?

In the 07+ TL-S, (not an issue in the Type-S models) that's a product of the Active Noise Cancellation. You can defeat ANC by removing the connector to the Rear Microphone (someone did a mini-how-to on this in the Electronics forum when he was installing an aftermarket subwoofer).

Otherwise you can't do much about it. :annoyed:

Hahahaha...that's what all ya'll get for hatin' on my wind deflector on Stella's head! Deal wit it! :chuckle:

Evader 10-01-2007 02:35 PM

I'm lost now, lol. What I'm talking about I don't think has anything to do with ANC. I'm talking about the crazy ass wind noise/vibration when you have one or both back windows down and the front windows up w/ sunroof closed. It sounds like a damn F-18 Hornet flying around inside my car lol, it also does this same shit on my envoy. Obviously if you open the sunroof or front windows it drastically decreases the wind noise.

Basit06TL 10-01-2007 02:40 PM

^^^ I know exactly what your talking about! The noise is ridiculous along with the air pressure level.

Yeah it has everything to do with ANC. That rear mic gets bombarded with wind turbulance when just the rear windows are open, causing the subwoofer to make this deafening rumble to compensate for what it percieves to be noise. I've experienced exactly that, even at only 20 MPH.

when you hold down that spoiler, air flows into the car creating lots of drag resistance and you can hear the low pressure throbbing, which is basically more air flowing into your car than can flow out. If you were in the back seat, you would definitely hear it. If you DO do that, then lower your rear windows a crack.

Like I stated in my first post my brother was in the back and he said that he didn't notice any difference in the turbulance in the back when I pushed down that spoiler but he also noticed that it was quieter in the car.

I noticed that one window down noise just last night....holy crap how terrible is that?!? So it is actually the subwoofer making that and not just wind in the car? I didn't even know about this ANC....What is it? Where is it? How does it work?

zeezz 10-01-2007 03:36 PM

actually, there is this noise even on cars without active noise cancellation. happens on almost all cars... solution.. crack a bit of your front windows, or something. ANC may make it worse...

twigglius 10-01-2007 04:20 PM

I swear my car gets louder when I hold that deflector down? hmmmmmm...

Dave1668 10-01-2007 05:37 PM

i open both the rear windows just a crack with the sunroof open. makes it much quieter.
if i have the rear windows down, i crack the front windows. greatly reduces the turbulance in the cabin.
