Question about A Service

Hi, my first service is coming up but I'm not sure if its going to be an "A" or "A1" service. I know "A" is oil change and "A1" is oil change + tire rotation. I've read that some people have been getting their first servie as "A" around 5000 miles or "A1" at around 7000.

My question is if my minder only shows "A" and I get that service done will the minder give a "1" service due shortly after?

Thanks.

Can anyone help? I don't know much about cars and I'm a little confused about how the MID works.

I understand generally you should rotate tires at 7000-8000 miles.

For their FIRST service I read here that some people had the MID say "A" (NOT "A1") service due at around 5000-6000 miles. So for those people did your MID say "1" service due (tire rotation only) at around 7000-8000 miles?

Does the MID reset the tire rotation timing once it's reset after a "A" service (Oil change only)?

Sorry if I'm confusing you guys, cause I'm confused. Thanks.

Edit note: This reply was edited after I found that there is an explanation in the service manual about what happens when you reset the MID yourself before getting any notification.

The MID calculates oil life based on engine operating conditions and accumulated engine revolutions (owner's manual, page 195). The tire rotation and other maintenance items are based only on accumulated miles. This means that if your MID says to change oil well before the mileage point for rotation, you will only get an A. It will not reset your tire rotation mileage or any other maintenance item.

This information from the service manual will explain what happens to tire rotation and other maintenance items when you reset the MID yourself:

From the service manual, page 3-6:
NOTE: If you are resetting the display when the oil life is more than 15%, the maintenance message "Service Due Soon" will be displayed. Make sure the maintenance items requiring service have been performed before resetting the display.
So this means if you change your oil before the 15% Service Due Soon is displayed, and you go to reset the display, if there are other items to be serviced, they will show up on the display, and if you clear the display the MID will take this to mean that you performed the required service.

Actually it's a little more clear now thanks.

I'm at 4500 miles and 40% oil, if I go by the MID that would mean I would get a message at around 7500 miles. That message would almost certainly be "A1" right?

Either way, if I get a message sooner than 7500 (say 6000) miles and it's only an "A" I should make sure to rotate my tires at around 7500 miles anyway right?

Once again thanks.

Right both times.

But your message might be sooner than 7,500 miles. Some think that as the oil wears and the mileage increases, the percentage will drop faster.

Since you are obviously keeping on top of this, it will be interesting to know your mileage each time the MID goes down to the next percentage, which will be increments of 10 until it gets to 20%, then the next one will be 15%, etc.

I'll update my status here as the percentage goes down.

I'm just a little nervous cause I'm taking a Vegas trip on Feb 12 and thats an easy 1000 miles (back and forth), so hopefully after the trip (not before or at least in the middle) my service message will show up.

Sounds pretty linear... 10% for every 600-800 miles for you. Are you going to get an oil analysis done on your factory fill? You've left your's in longer than most, but as long as Acura says to... We'd all be very curious what an analysis would show... I'm still at 70% and am at 2600 miles or so. I plan on changing on or near 3k, which I suspect will be at 60% on my MID.

I know this is beside the point, but that's only about a 700 mile round trip... unless you cruise the strip a whole bunch of times.

Currently I have 8300 miles and MID reads <20%. I already got my 'A' Oil change at around 4000 miles. So when do I actually take the car in for 'A1' -->Oil change + Tire Rotation?? Is it when its says <10% or 5%?
I used Mobil 10W 30 oil before. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Tire rotation every 5K+- is safe. Oil change, most have decided that the MID is not a very good indicator and the oil should be changed sooner. There are many threads expressing the rational. 3K, 5K, 7.5K are some of the common times for periodic changes. Do some research and find a comfort level for you. Oil is cheap compared to internal engine problems.

If you haven't taken your trip yet, I would consider changing it first IMHO. I had mine changed for the first time yesterday @ 4K, the MID said 30% left.

A1 = $60 (with my own oil)

Just got a quote on A1 service with brining my own oil: $60 (includes tire rotation for $39 and $20 for oil change - with my own oil)...Does this sound reasonable? What you guys have been paying for your "A1" Service?

THANKS!!!

Update:

Currently I have approx 6180 miles, at about 6100 I got my first message "Service Due Soon A1" the percentage changed to "<15%".

I have an appointment this Saturday in which I suspect I will be driving into the dealer lot with about 6300 miles. I'll update how everything went after.

DarkWraith33: I don't know much about cars but how would you go about getting an oil analysis? If its too much work I probably won't.

Parrothead: You're right, I overestimated my trip. I used about 600 miles total.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions everyone

I think it's Blackstone Labs that others have used... It's like $30 or something... FYI...

Final Update:

Had my service done at around 6300 miles. Service took about an hour. They also offered to take me somewhere while I waited. Everything went well and I'm satisfied.
